He did not only feel the blues, he was the blues - like muddy in his earlier days - but rory was the fucking damned best guitar player the world have ever seen. words could not describe the loss, but his music will live forever. R.i.P.
honestly this shit was never famous, few people know who Rory was. Its a musicians music and always will be. Mostly people who play it love it and those who don't may never know.
If you ask someone these days they probably couldn't even tell you who Muddy Waters is! But like you said its a musicians' music and personally I like that aspect of the blues because it is almost your own special thing. It is a shame however that people don't get the same feeling that is the blues anymore because people listen to this modern rock 'music'
Bull shit!!...blues is the peoples music, dont try and act like its something only you and your musician friends understand, thats missing the point of the blues entirlely, and actually proving you understand nothing
I was not implying that blues was an exclusive thing at all. What I said was that most kids today don't know the original artists who mad blues so popular.
i sat up all night last night and worked out this note for note... Can't remember half of it now. Even though i had it note for note, i still wasn't playing it with the.... passion? he plays it with.... he just has the best timing and the best everything.
Sorry to say TAGZ, but Rory is faaaar better than Muddy technically, and improvisationally, and I truly believe jealousy was a strong motivator there. Muddy was an orginal, NO DOUBT, but Rory, as a player and a performer, took many of Muddy's tunes to new and different levels, and played things Muddy could only dream of playing. In the end, I truly believe Muddy came to understand that when someone as special as Rory plays your songs, it's a true reason to smile.
fuefedahoidda: It's all down to who you relate to the most. Most certainly Rory himself idolised the original Bluesmen he learnt from...albeit he was alot nicer in personality than some of them. I met him a couple of times and Rory was a very warm, approachable guy. He reminds me of an Irish Buddy Guy here.
Gitply45: Comparing RG to Muddy is like comparing Clapton to Robert Johnson. Muddy was the link to the innovators like Charley Patton. Technique has nothing to do with it...Lightnin' Hopkins,JL Hooker only played in 2 keys BUT it was how they put the song across that made them great...however basic they sounded. Vocally they were stronger and lived the life of an American Bluesman. Rory was fantastic and the nicest guy that ever lived but he knew the TRUE history of Blues.
I love this performance. That intro is just marvellous! Can't help but smile jealously everytime he does that 'sawing' across the strings but ringing that one tone only in a sort of vibrating, dissonant way at 00:35. Divine!
Absolutely awesome.

For years I thought SRV's main influences were Albert King and Hendrix. Now I see the debt he owes Rory. They don't make em like this anymore....

agree
but technical playing is the only thing
i think that muddy waters a more soulfilled tone than rory
but i also like rory more than the old bluesmen;)
