first of all, evrybody has an accent... "english" whether american or british is also an accent so 4 her 2 say she doesnt hv an accent, it's clear she has no idea wat d word "Accent" means.
my sister i no fit shout......do you know i was refused a job here (Malaysia) because of my Nigerian accent...i was told i can only get the job if loose my accent....its so frustrating....but i gat no choice but to loose the accent because i need the job......
Great vid! I was born and raised in th UK and have a London accent that i hate. All the other black kids would say my accent was too posh or white. Dumb cos they sound as British as i do! My parents were conscious about us having good british accents and a lot of Naijas here in the UK are the same. I love the Igbo accent and i can do it quite well though my mum says don't get stuck talking like that! Wish people would stop judging and putting down accents.
When I moved to UK, I sped up my Naija accent and it came out American. When I speak Yoruba, my accent is correct..lol! People have been know to double-take when I bust out in Yoruba. I am at the point I want my Naija (English) accent back! Just because I don't have a UK accent. This week, 6 people asked me where in America I'm from! It's bad!
A friend of mine in University used to strength her Naija accent during presentations so they would think her English was more amazing! lol!
another thing. Nigerians are also former british colonists like Americans. People have been speaking English in the geographic area that is called Nigeria at least as long as there have been european colonies in the Americas. Our accent is just as legitimate as theirs. you're 100% right. don't dim ur light for anybody jare.
i am encouraged by you oh! the Nigerian accent is beautiful, colorful, and alive. i'm a Nigerian and I started out (when I moved to America after secondary school) fighting the American accent influence. I've always been 100% naija. but after 5 yrs ( i didn't go home for 9 yrs!) i started noticing that my accent had changed my parents called me one day and they said my answering machine sounded like someone else. I'm now trying to force my Naija accent to come back. I'm proud of my Naija accent
I can totally relate I'm from Sierra leone when used to hide my accent when I was a kid now even when I talk people alway stop in the middle of conversations and ask you have an accent where are you from.... Some girls think its hot.lmfao I rember when my professir asked a
Question in lecture and i was called on to anwserd the Question my professor then stopped in the middle of lecture to say oh you have an accent where are you from.lol (it gets annoying but I feel unique at the same ti
loll i feel you sometimes i wish i could just speak nigerian accent all the time but my brain can literallly not do it because i moved back and forth so much between Naij and the states growing up so its programmed to speak whatever accent im being spoken to in...if that makes sense..lol and when i am having conversations with a nigerian and american at the same time my brain gets confused and it gets weird lol. anyway...Up Naija! btw i tag you to do a Nigerian Tag oh.
OMG I LOVE THIS !!! it really annoys me when i come across ppl with such ignorance. There's nothing wrong with the nigerian accent, I love the fact that you are proud of who you are !!! i was born and brought up in the uk and people tell me all the time that i have a slight nigerian accent, and i ALWAYS take it as a compliment , its the problem with ppl, they go abroad and forget who they r, and try 2 wipe out all the essence of their culture, thanks 4 this
lol this reminds me of my 2nd year in Canada (been here for a little over 6 yrs now, my lovely Nigerian accent ain't going nowhere baby!) and this girl i was meeting 4 like the first time, who is from Ivory Coast nd sure as hell had her Ivory Coast or w/evs accent, asks me how long ive been in Canada. I say 2 yrs. She like "wow 2 years, nd u still have an accent?!" I was jst like O_O emm is dis real life LOL what gives u d impression dat I would want to modify/lose my accent SMH some pple tho.
Awwwww, you're so sweet! Honestly, that "where you're from?" has started to get to me. They keep saying "you sound British," like wtf! I was born in Chicago, but raised in Nigeria, I LOVE my accent and glad that people understand what I'm saying. I feel like this accent thing makes me speak softly to some people, but I can like to shout when I'm speaking to my African people lol. Love you gal!
the one that is like pepper to my nyash is folks who just arrive d the states like 2 days ago and go "pardon?" when i speak yoruba/igbo to them like WTF? Are you stark raving mad?? No be say dem born you for there sef! mshew.
thank u jare abeg i know that shit is annoying as hell.. and i have encountered that ... i tell dumb people that say shit like oo u have accent that they most defo have an accent to.
