Actually he was "unschooled" along with both his brothers. All three are happy, well balanced and highly gifted. We have now idea how the current school system turns children with a love for learning, into burned out people who may never find their real talents or experience the joy of excelling in things because they love to do them.
great job on the song.. The thing that i dont get, is that why people say he is going to be huge.. I mean he is a great pianist.. But, anyone can play any song they want with enough practice.. I dont know how much he practiced, but some people get it in 2 hours, some take 2 years, and they each get the same credit...
This kid was never forced. He plays 10 minutes a day and it is his thing, not his parents'. His mother is against the trend to force kids to play instruments.
what's wrong with 5 hours a day? for your kids to grow up and have a career they love, isn't that the greatest thing you can do for them? i'd pick a concert hall over an office cubicle any day.
what makes you think that a kid who's forced to practice something (and im not saying this is what happened here) will necessairly love the carreer that comes with it. I know several people who grew up with me being forced to practice music since an early age. well guess what. almost all of them dont play music at all now cuz as soon as they reached 18 they dropped it. so what good did it do to ruin their childhood now its all wasted.
you have to give kids the option. if they want to drop it when they get to an age where they are self aware (teenage), fine. but ask any performing artist if they regret putting their life into their art, regret 'ruining' their childhood. childhood doesn't have to be defined by tv and video games. i sure as hell appreciate my mom making me practice when i was little.
the fact YOU dont regret having ur mom making you practice doesnt mean that everyone who was forced to practice is going to appreciate it. And there's a diffrence between pushing ur kid to try stuff and motivating him, and having him practice several hours a day, as the hypothetic case we're discussing. When do you consider your kid to be self aware? law says its by 18 for some things, 21 for others, sometimes its 16.. how do u decide when the kid's ready to decide. its purely arbitrary
I think kids shouldn't be forced to practice at their instrument period. It will make them hate it, and will grow to hate you. If they like playing that's motivation enough.
amusing that he goes to pick up what appears to be a cello bow...I assume it's cello cause of the chair that's there...so...yea he probably played piano and cello hahaha...oh my word
Simple dynamic changes and following the score doesn't necessarily mean emotion. Personally I don't like the interpretation. However good technique and there weren't just simple dynamic changes. a little more rubato would do nicely. Balance is good but could be a little better.
Not all great pianists start out when they are 3y/o, some of the greatest pianist played very poorly well into their thirties. Especially the real geniuses. Mozart was not known for his accuracy and beautiful tone when playing instruments. Aldort is probably a genius, if you follow his eyes you'll see there is a distinct familial relationship he has with the keyboard. He's making real music, it isn't phoned in or emotionless... It's touching.
sorry, i don`t know speak english but i saw a video when this boy is 13 years old and i can see so diference because in this video is so natural and it`s more interesting than the other video, where he play less natural, i supposed he toke piano class and it is great but i prefer this style
I actually was thinking "Wow, this ones not so metallic and bright."
This is the first child prodigy that didn't make me sick watching, because he actually has a professional quality control. He's not some little Chinese girl playing some difficult Bach without having any expression.
This kid's a romantic.
Maybe he's the son of Daniel Barenboim and his late cellist wife.
i totally agree....i like his expression!!!!as you sad almost all chinese prodigy are, in my view, only the result of phisical mistreatings....they play as they were ROBOTS!!! Lang Lang is a CASE!!!!
This kid has some incredible skills, and I couldn;t even attempt this piece at full speed, lets not kid outselves that this performance is flawless, tonnes of wrong notes and imperfect rythems, but as I say far better than I could play. i suspect he will be able to play it much better in 10 years time when his hands have grown a bit. Good effort though.
This reminds me of a story I heard. A Toronto music critic reviewed a pianist and criticized the pianist for some inaccurate notes. To his surprise the pianist showed up next day at his office score in hand and asked if the critic would kindly point out which notes he played wrongly. The critic had no response. Great playing, Oliver!
I was told this story by my university piano professor, Dr. Damiana Bratuz, at U. of Western Ontario about John Kraglund, then the music critic of the Toronto Globe & Mail. Sorry, don't remember the pianist. I don't think she would like to me.
his playing overall is good, but everything is in fragments, i don't feel "safe" or "assured" when i listen to his playing, he's keeping to a safe side on this piece.
I'll be following this boy's career with great interest! I just wish the videos were more professionally made, with a steady camera, better conditions of light etc.
Nice job! Although in the very beginning its 'piano' so its a lot softer. Just a comment....but anyways its awesome! Dont worry im getting there. Right now Im leraning Piano Sonate K.545 1st movement by Mozart
ohmygod.. this kid's gonna be big. i've been playing both cello and piano for pretty long and it's really hard to practice and get serious w/t both while going to school and all tht stuff. is he a cellist or pianist!? hah
wow! i was so impressed by your piano playing on the mozart concerto. i want to play it one day..i didn't realize (till just now, and that's about a year since i first watched that piece) that you play cello!!!! yay! me too, though, i'm not that good. better than piano at it though. yay, go cello XD you rule dude
he's almost 2 thirds of my age, and is still 20x better than me on Cello AND piano! This really isn't good for my confidence haha! This guy really is special
Anyone who has seen Peyton Manning's "Priceless Pep-Talks" understands possibly how some of us -aging- erstwhile "pianists" might need one. I started at age 27 and for decades I have been beating my head against the wall...How many at so many different pursuits are trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, and only because of the love? This performance at twice the age would leave one spellbound...
marvellous. I'll look forward to hearing this young man in the future. I hope his whole life is being nurtured so that he can develop the breadth of experience to bring to his music and for its own sake too.
Sounds like scottieGCM could be a bit jealous! You can't buy talent and an extremely hard working nature. You can foster them, but that doesnt really count for much on its own.
i'm only good at the violin...which i'm on my 15th year of playing. I've tried to play the piano to help applications for college look good, but that will NEVER happen. BRAVO! You're truly amazing...see you at Carnegie Hall!
amazing how he learning to master the cello and the piano at the same time even i am not that talented. i can only play the violin but not even that well and i am 15. i feel out done
This has got to be the most stupid post I have ever read. This boy represents the pinnacle of Civilization. If children are going hungry it's mostly the result of greed and corruption. Bravo Oliver. Keep the fires of greatness burning.

So I just saw the saintsaens piece (I'm looking throug youtube for different references and such and came across Oliver) and then i looked over to the side and lo behold piano. I am now absolutely taken by this...
Mrs. Aldort, I was just blown away. He plays with such maturity and deftness. You're going to see some really great things from him and you should be the proudest parent alive. Thanks for the postings. I can't wait until my wife gets home to see this kid.
I shared this video with the father of Alistair, who is one of Princeton's top cello teachers:
"Yes he is a very good Cellist. I hear [music] coming from Alistair's teaching studio when he is here every week. None of his students play it as well as this kid, and on a 3/4 size Cello too. Normally those instruments are junk.
Pretty amazing that he has the same level of talent on the piano as well."
Wow! At the start I was a bit skeptical but by the end I had goosebumps, and I'm not easy to impress. The expressiveness of the performance just sweeps away the occasional feeling that he was being limited by technique. What this boy is doing is well past what even the best teacher could instil, in terms of interpretation. The music speaks to him, and he passes the message along to us!
Mrs. Aldort, I personally would NOT want you as my mother. You brag too much about your child. You also seem to use your child to get publicity for your book in some other "comments."
Thank you. I understand how you feel. I hope your mother never bragged about you (because you don't like it.) Oliver loves it and is VERY humble. I do use my son for publicity with his permission and joy. If you think it is wrong, do not do that when you are a parent of a wonder child.
You comment makes me want to puke! You idiot! Why can't you see his amazing talent and expression. You pompous ass...I bet you are a real prima dona! This boy is VERY, VERY talented and has a bright future!
Gift has nothing to do with age. It's how the piece is played and in this case, it is exceptionally well interpreted and understood. Simply awesome to hear.
OMG, Geez I can't believe a kid this young can have such talent. Geez even an adult playing this is impressive, but a little kid, now thats outstanding.
Mighty impressive and very enjoyable on both piano and cello. The lad has a real sense of style to match his remarkable technique. Thank you for sharing this music with us - and, if you added more piano vids (Bach? Mozart?), they would not go unappreciated.
In just two weeks? Practiced very little? This kid should be on "America's Got Talent" or something. There are millions of people watching jugglers on that show when this kid is barely getting the exposure he needs on youtube! I know people who can play this piece, but not in two weeks and not flawlessly like he can. Amazing....
I don't know. It is a puzzle to me too. He had this Chopin ready for performance in two weeks and he practiced very little. He just played it through each day and had a couple of lessons on expression.
Sorry I cannot be more helpful in understanding this.
good try slowind down a bit but considering you play both cello and piano is very good

Dang. He is a prodigy I am sure.

I don't get it any more than you do.
