Very good. In fact I believe that just below the surface, most believers do know this, but they fear that some people do not have a moral compass and that because of this, it is better if people are made to fear an invisible man in the sky. Belief in god is usually just a belief in believing. It's about control.
And yes, you do have very cute cheeks, as one comment states.
If a theist asks me this, particularly Christians, I point out the atrocities and the Bible and ask how they chose what rules to cherry pick. I also say, that if the only thing keeping you from commiting crime is the fear of punishment from a superior being, that speaks much more negatively of you than the people you rail against.
I don't believe in fairy tails dude.... I just think morality is overrated. I think everyone should do what makes them happy, and for me, lieing, killing for hire, stealing, and cheating all bring happiness. The thought of not having to worry about hell makes this life a very fulfilling one.
@bornstandin Sorry, perhaps I ought to expand on my quip? (*Even though jokes are never funny when they require explanation*)

@Tj930 This is exactly what causes people to think Atheists are stuck up, arrogant pricks. Be careful how you say things. The freedom you have to insult Christianity was actually made possible by Jesus. If you doubt it then go live in Saudi Arabia and make this type of Video.
@trommelbiel She could make this video in Sweden, Norway, Germany or France and so on, all majority atheist countries, without consequences. In Saudi Arabia, your example, almost every person is religious. In truth, majority atheist societies are more just and peaceful than societies where most people are religious.
@trommelbiel You know that a few hundred years back christianity would be a problem for you if you didnt belive in it. Inquisition, Holy wars etc. The freedom didnt come from jesus. It was fought for during the age of enlightenment. This freedom is the result of a long struggle with the christian authoritys.
@metalmolisher666 : Your response is bigoted which is not surprising. I do not exclude the fact that lots of wars were waged but the basic premise that brought freedom and democracy was the gospel thought by Jesus.
@trommelbiel Whats bigoted about stating what is true. I am not against christians, i dont hate them, but your statement is wrong. No bigotry involved. The institutionalised church was always a tool to suppress people. Jesus (if he existed) is said to have preached love and so on, but the churches never really did. They preach it but they dont life up to it. So The statement you made is not really correct. War had to be fought for that freedom. It didnt just appear from nothing.
@metalmolisher666 : Dear Sister. You are too pretty to be an Atheist. Please come back to your senses. Let me give you a simple proof that God exists. Very soon Isreal will attack Iran and it will lead to what no one wants: the third world war. North korea will attack South Korea with Missiles. The bible described this war more than 2500 years ago. This is not the time to be academic about something that will impact your life for all eternity. Please come back now!
@trommelbiel Yeah as if posting nonsense would make your point true. The bible doesnt describe this war. Thats nonsense. Its a self fulfilling prophecy. Anybody who ever looked at how humans compete for rescources could give that proficy. And its a very nice example of the damgers of religion. You insists that she will go to hell "impact your life for all eternity". how sweet. to win an argument by scareing somebody. And give the exact quote in the bible for that proficy.
@metalmolisher666 :I am happy you know what awaits mankind. Indeed the events of today were written about more than 2000 years ago. But it is not for the logical/academic mind to comprehend. Wish you luck and blessings.
Though I do not fully agree on this video, I do respect how professionally you spoke and respectful you were (at least I think you were trying to be respectful?). It is unfortunate that not a lot of atheists I have come across could give those of faith a little more courtesy and respect and at least present their points in a fashion similar to yours.
Atheists have morals because they can't help it. They get morality where everyone else does. Morals are rooted in sociobiology and the evolutionary traits of empathy, altruism, a sense of fairness, cooperative social living, and educating, protecting and nurturing the young. The morals of the Bible and of God were put there by man (same source for everything in the Bible). They co-exist and even compete with other evolutionary traits: aggression, dominance, selfishness and possessiveness.
@Shelama I have a question. If you take humans out of a society and lets say place them on a deserted island with no real sense of authority, would you think they would be able to keep their moral values? William Golding's Lord of the Flies is a plausible situation where even children who were educated in respecting authority and the laws soon became salvages themselves. This type of thinking would lead me to believe that we as humans are born evil and thus morality is unnatural.
Additionally, morality shifts depending on cultural or societal standards. For instance, most of us can reasonably assume that slavery is wrong, morally. However, hundreds of years ago, it was considered common practice, so morality was defined differently in that context. There will always be people of course, regardless of your time period that find something immoral that others may find moral, and vice versa. Sincerely, an Atheist who seeks to promote free thinking :)
Morality has no definitive structure, it is based solely on the individual and their beliefs. It is merely a set of codes one has, and often they aren't even defined. I think we can all agree, Atheist and Theist alike, that murdering and raping children is wrong. It doesn't take a religious background to acknowledge that. People often try to define morality within some set of principles of guidelines, but this cannot be done because morality is as fluid as the waves of our oceans.
The most sincere form of morality is one birthed from the sole desire to do, be and behave in a moral manner. Not because some fictional entity might punish you in life or disown you after. You're being commanded or threatened into a behavior pattern (that many of you blatantly fail at btw), rather than feeling the individual desire to promote peace & happiness.
Lastly, look at everyone that has ever earned a Nobel Peace Prize, the vast majority of them are not religious
Ironically, I find Christian to be amoral, unkind or inhumane. It's like they think that because they're Christian they don't need to be good people. The more Christian a person thinks they are, they less trust worthy I find them to be. This has been my experience, but I dont claim that this is law or something. BTW, I'm not an atheist.
I never knew that common sense could be so damn sexy. Is it weird that her highly intellectual response to a well thought out question turned me on. I guess it helps that she is attractive as well and well spoken. Everything she said made lots of sense and is something i have attributed to my life, even if i had to find it out the hard way by making mistakes *which is intrinsically a natural occurence in human behavior*. I am behind this 100% not cause its cool but because it seems right.
@Z3r0XoL I feel no need to list my morals to you. God can see I am morally righteous, and that is all that matters, for it is He who judges me, not you.
@schlegelt care to share? nope, alright thanks for your help(in maybe converting me) im totaly open. you dont listen, you dont speak. you are static entities of self worth.
@schlegelt I'm pretty sure i saw a God character in a book called bible or something… are you sure it wasnt there? And how the hell did you hear the other guy sneeze?!
I chose my morality by first asking that question "what in reality gives rise to ethics?" The answer is: men's free will. To survive and to find happiness, men must learn what values it requires. The first is rationality, which is the only way to find truth about reality since it is based on reality and goes by the rules of reality. Men's only rights given by his nature are life, liberty and proprety. From this comes selfishness, men must produce they sustenance for themselves in order to live.
If a man wants value from another man, he must trade, giving value for value. From those comes all my values. You can find them explained in more details in Rand's Atlas shrugged.
Atheists have morals based on their own common sense, theists have their morals imposed by what their particular religion says, so they are puppets. No offense, just my opinion.
I think you hit the nail squarely on the head, a strong basis for morality is empathy, it's has been observed that even lower order primates display empathy and altruistic behavior.
It's not hard to see how this type of behavior would be advantageous for individuals living within social groups, both for the success of the individual and for the group as a whole,
On the other hand antisocial behavior would place the offender at risk of expulsion from the group which would significantly reduce both the individuals chances of survival and reproduction.
To follow the previous entry, in a world where there is no Deity, there is also no right or wrong. There is only beneficial and not beneficial. A democratic "people" usually choose to govern themselves by what is beneficial to the majority while protecting the minority interest so as to be fair. This is literally, morals, but not "right and wrong". Everyone has morals, even the most heinous criminals, but their morals are not beneficial to the group and do not protect the minority interest.
This is weird. There are definitely different views on what "Morals" are. The dictionary says that moral(s) mean {1) significance or practical lesson 2.)passage pointing out a conclusion 3.) teachings or modes of conduct. } Therefore, yes, atheists have morals just like anyone else. This includes those who "have no morals" since having no morals would be a mode of conduct, thus being a set of morals. To a theist, morals are a sense of what is right and what is wrong.
"How can an atheist have morals?" hahaha, such a question may sound smart in the Bible Belt in America, or in fundamentalist countries in the Middle-East, but all of the world is not like that. In my country, for example, such a question would be answered by "Huh? You don't go out much, and meet people living around you, do you?". It's just so obvious.
Hopefully America may move towards secularism and atheism in the future. Then this question becomes unnecessary. Good luck (from Sweden).
Dam! I saw the title and my mind started conjuring up a brilliantly sarcastic and witty reply. As it turns out, we're on the same side and i enjoyed listening to your rational and sensible contentions.
A much better argument than the guy i just watched who thinks that because celery exists then god does as well.
I wish... that people of all religions could think... similarly.. to how you think. This is, undoubtedly, the most rational argument in the "religious/moral war" I have ever witnessed. Thank you.
@xmattxdavisx "Morals are created by society". Exactly. And the have changed over time, as we experienced and adapted to new situations. I'm sure that morals will change in the future as well, but it's hard to know when or why.
Perhaps new moral questions will be introduced when cybernetic implants are more commonly used? Or sentient robots are built? Or maybe there'll be a change in a majority of people's mind to treat other apes according to human rights? ("Ape rights".) Who knows.
Atheism - godless people means people who believe in treating and judging others with reason, science, justice, equality, compassion, and not commandments of an imaginary violent god and bigotry moral convictions. Atheist's morals are what you do - does it hurt others?
@billfred51 it is not a question per se, it is more a statement that has a question mark at the end of it. The asker has no intention of gaining knowledge from asking it, they are just on the wind up.
No one should get their morals from a two thousand year old book. Morals should be based on a persons own perception of right and wrong. As such an atheist will often be MORE moral than a theist, who just points to ancient scripts for justification of good and bad acts.
If a book were to be written by a REAL GOD it would be PROFOUNDLY ASTONISHING, AMAZING, ELECTRIFYING, INTELLECTUALLY INSPIRING but without the VIOLENCE, CRUELTY, SACRIFICES and HATRED where all mankind would KNOW the TRUTH, unlike the puny unenlightened productions of the bible, Koran, Bhagadvad Gita, book of Mormon and all the other Crap. I get my morals from me, not Deuteronomy and the like. I'm also an atheist thank god.
@tonyp1945 I happen to agree with your comments. I am an atheist and I find the suggestion that morality comes from God (any God) ridiculous and rather insulting. I was trying to point out that peppering your comments with capitals makes you look like a crank - in fact rather like the religious nuts who write things like JESUS LOVES you or YOU'RE GOING TO HELL. It's generally agreed that capitals (the textual equivalent of shouting) is best avoided in emails - if you want to be taken seriously.
@mikelheron20 (1) WRONG. Look into the secret societies that these same politicians calling for a New World Order are apart of. They are Luciferian occultists with an agenda to abolish all spiritual and religious aspects of society to then usher in the anti-Christ who will rule over mankind through a tyrannical one-world government. (This is their demonic religious belief and agenda.)
@mikelheron20 (2) But first, they have to construct a global secular society. Look at the back of a 1-dollar bill. They hide their symbolism in plain view. You see the Illuminati pyramid with the Freemasonic all-seeing eye (aka the "eye of Lucifer") at the top. Underneath, it reads "novus ordo seclorum," which is latin for a "new secular order." Above the eye, it reads "annuit coeptis" which means "he favors our undertaking." ... "He" being Lucifer.
@mikelheron20 (3) Please, I urge you to look into the nefarious Luciferian religious beliefs of the politicians and elites currently running our world.
Watch two online documentaries called "The Arrivals" and "The Arrivals Reloaded." They will explain it to you much better than I can.
Do a Google and YouTube search for the New World Order and One-World Government.
@Rookerfy0 Kids? THANKS!! LOL I'm a 41 year old atheist who grew up in a fundie household. Old school, Old Testament fundamentalists. I still realize our "morals" are provided by nature, with tons of possible causes. Probably a combination of a several causes.
"Morality" varies by individual and circumstances.
Nature has provided us with morals. Any individuals born without a sense of morals or a moral code are called SOCIOPATHS, and we lock them away from the rest of civilization. Look around the animal world and you'll see a "code" that social animals live by, which does vary slightly depending on the society they live in.
Morals does'nt came from religion,,it's just a common sense to choose which is wrong or right. Religious people always defend on what their holybook says and fogetting about the real issue of what is right or wrong. If you will read the Genesis your Morals will be change forever because of what was writen is all imoralist to me. God does'nt think like that,,it was a human fantasy.
@55oiram actually if you think about it its more genetic than common sense. like the domestication gene that they find in many domestic animals. you dont think about doing good you just be good because it was beneficial to your ancestors and also to you right now too
@frenchyisbeast BENEFICIAL??? Do you think so? I think you're wrong,,doing good or bad is automatically to Homo Sapiens like you,,you don't think about it,you just do it without thinking. Maybe in your cases are not because you need a domestication.

Very soon Isreal will attack Iran and it will lead to what no one wants: the third world war. North korea will attack South Korea with Missiles. The bible described this war more than 2500 years ago. This is not the time to be academic about something that will impact your life for all eternity. Please come back now!
trommelbiel 1 week ago
@trommelbiel Yeah as if posting nonsense would make your point true. The bible doesnt describe this war. Thats nonsense. Its a self fulfilling prophecy. Anybody who ever looked at how humans compete for rescources could give that proficy. And its a very nice example of the damgers of religion. You insists that she will go to hell "impact your life for all eternity". how sweet. to win an argument by scareing somebody. And give the exact quote in the bible for that proficy.
metalmolisher666 1 week ago

Shelama 2 weeks ago 2
@Shelama I have a question. If you take humans out of a society and lets say place them on a deserted island with no real sense of authority, would you think they would be able to keep their moral values? William Golding's Lord of the Flies is a plausible situation where even children who were educated in respecting authority and the laws soon became salvages themselves. This type of thinking would lead me to believe that we as humans are born evil and thus morality is unnatural.
AssassinGhost 2 weeks ago
Conscience is the moral compass.
WinteRest49 2 weeks ago
Additionally, morality shifts depending on cultural or societal standards. For instance, most of us can reasonably assume that slavery is wrong, morally. However, hundreds of years ago, it was considered common practice, so morality was defined differently in that context. There will always be people of course, regardless of your time period that find something immoral that others may find moral, and vice versa. Sincerely, an Atheist who seeks to promote free thinking :)
fireblazer6661 3 weeks ago
Morality has no definitive structure, it is based solely on the individual and their beliefs. It is merely a set of codes one has, and often they aren't even defined. I think we can all agree, Atheist and Theist alike, that murdering and raping children is wrong. It doesn't take a religious background to acknowledge that. People often try to define morality within some set of principles of guidelines, but this cannot be done because morality is as fluid as the waves of our oceans.
fireblazer6661 3 weeks ago

I guess it helps that she is attractive as well and well spoken. Everything she said made lots of sense and is something i have attributed to my life, even if i had to find it out the hard way by making mistakes *which is intrinsically a natural occurence in human behavior*.

I think you hit the nail squarely on the head, a strong basis for morality is empathy, it's has been observed that even lower order primates display empathy and altruistic behavior.
It's not hard to see how this type of behavior would be advantageous for individuals living within social groups, both for the success of the individual and for the group as a whole,
AndyCielecki 1 month ago
On the other hand antisocial behavior would place the offender at risk of expulsion from the group which would significantly reduce both the individuals chances of survival and reproduction.

To follow the previous entry, in a world where there is no Deity, there is also no right or wrong. There is only beneficial and not beneficial. A democratic "people" usually choose to govern themselves by what is beneficial to the majority while protecting the minority interest so as to be fair. This is literally, morals, but not "right and wrong". Everyone has morals, even the most heinous criminals, but their morals are not beneficial to the group and do not protect the minority interest.
dekecds 1 month ago

No one should get their morals from a two thousand year old book. Morals should be based on a persons own perception of right and wrong. As such an atheist will often be MORE moral than a theist, who just points to ancient scripts for justification of good and bad acts.

Moral is
Not forcing children to eat their fathers like "god" did (Eze 5:10).
Not forcing people to eat the flesh of their sons & daughters, (Jer 19)
Not sending two she-bears to rip apart 42 children for mocking a bald prophet (2kings2:24)
Not ordering murder of Job's family and the torture of Job because he was the one person on the whole planet who least deserved it. (Job 1).
Not exploiting the torture & crucifixion death of an innocent 33 year old virgin.

@Rookerfy0 Kids? THANKS!! LOL I'm a 41 year old atheist who grew up in a fundie household. Old school, Old Testament fundamentalists. I still realize our "morals" are provided by nature, with tons of possible causes. Probably a combination of a several causes.
"Morality" varies by individual and circumstances.
gvman3670 1 month ago
Nature has provided us with morals. Any individuals born without a sense of morals or a moral code are called SOCIOPATHS, and we lock them away from the rest of civilization. Look around the animal world and you'll see a "code" that social animals live by, which does vary slightly depending on the society they live in.

Religious people always defend on what their holybook says and fogetting about the real issue of what is right or wrong.
