Thats how it was intended, but it is a cheap smoker thus requiring modifications such as that to improve access to the fire pan. That dude knows what he is doing.
The fire pan I drilled in 3 places and put stainless steel threaded rods. You can see them at 0:15. They are bolted to the pan, so the pan is separate from the unit. Otherwise the fire pan sits inside and moves with the unit.
Thanks dude, I've been trying to Jimmy rig something to separate the fire pan...genius!

They were put on the outside because of the mods done. The changes done during these mods are quite popular.
