1. The reason the hairs jump is because when the spark from the big dome goes to the little, grounded one, it transfers the electrons from the hair to that, making the hair go back to the dome. Read answer to 2 if you are still confused.
2. The reason the balls jump is the same concept as the plates, the negatively charged balls repel from the negative dome, and they need somewhere to go, so they jump around trying to espape the field. (same with the hairs)

For such a huge VDG, that was very pathetic.....My homebuilt one stood about 1 foot and a half tall, and generated 4x as much as that did......
