@jazmine3023 Oh my gosh ....they do ! That is so funny ! It would have been great if they had done a skit with Kelso,Hyde,Eric and Fez doing this song ! Great comment,Jazmine !
awsome, though werent tall the band members not from the us and i find it odd rarely do you see the drummer as the main singer though he has a awsome voice
I too was only 9 yrs old when this came out. Never saw what the band looked like til now! Thank you! Very cool. And what a musical Delorean it is. ( a trip back in time)
And what is up with the Vanity Fair queer boy wearing the powder blue stewardess smock/skirt/dress? Vanity Fair's only real hit was "Hitchin' a Ride" which I like but talk about some proud queerness in stage in those get-ups.
@jonnygouda1 what's with your unprovoked attack on this guy? and Vanity Fair? they were great bands! because he wears blue, he's queer? and what do you know about Vanity Fair?
@jonnygouda1 The more wilder , the better...stage clothes arent gay (Would u say that about Hendrix?).... Vanity fair had another big hit with (early in the morning ), by the way..../also this song never was not meant to be takin as fact, it was a song, not a history lesson...ok...to..bze2niz4??
@tommieparch I agree, Vanity Fare was a great group, no way 'queer'! Also, I wasn't giving a history lesson...many people including myself are interested in lyrics of oldies songs and this was just some musical 'trivia.' :)
My oldest brother has the original 45 rpm of this song. It was one of my favorite songs growing up 13 years his younger. It was also the creepiest thing I ever heard. My mom told me a number of times when I was a little kid how my great grandfather was considered murdered by the mafia as he was a reporter and he wouldn't stop naming names. "One day yo won't come home" and one day he did not.
And @ garynull I do NOT know way bands are not like this anymore.
3 people must have been killed in Chicago by Al Capone
(Thank you, so much, for this, bze2nlz4! Finally for the first time since this was a hit back in 1974, when I was 10 years old and was hearing this and sometimes singing this while I rode my bicycle around New Port Richey, FL, I get to see what Paper Lace actually looked like performing this tune!) I hope youtube poster MGoddard will approach you soon to use an excerpt of this in their Chart Sweep of #1 tunes of 1974.
if you look at the microphones on the drumkit, you will notice they look a little odd.thats because they are predominantly a french manufactured mic although im not sure what the company name is,somthing like leem or lem.so it would be safe to assume this recording could have been made in france although, one or two other european countries did try it for a while but not used at all in the uk.hope this helps.
my brother got this album for christmas in 1973...still remember the cover with them dressed up like gangsters........im like 'what the hell is that?'..........lol
I remember we kids laughed at the "100 cops were dead" line followed by "glory be" a few lines later. We knew enough about the St. Valentine's Day Massacre to know that this song was in no way historically accurate. Anyway, we liked it!
@Vercingetorix2006 All you guys made me to do some more research on that story. Since I am not the kind of guy who just listens, but is also interested in the meaning of lyrics. Anyway, that is pretty good stuff. We also liked it, and of course the band, overhere in Germany. British pop was very popular in Germany in the first half of the 70s.
Great clip! Where did u get it? I was 13 when this came out. Flashback, totally. I keep replying it just to remember that simpler time. Thx for posting it! =^..^=
@GaryNull I so agree, they were a Fantastic Band and deserved to go on a lot longer then they did, for me? they had it all..great voices, goodlooking for sure and the songs were Amazing !
oh yeah don't forget "chicago bang bang"from stripes.europe still thinks chicago is a bad ass town.AND THEY'RE DAMN RIGHT CHICAGO BANG!! BANG!!LOLOLOLLOL
the song may well have been a slight reference to the 67 chicago riots after the assination of M.L.K. I remember that and I was glad that my dad ,who was a firefighter on the west side ,did come home alive.or at least I was later when I was old enough to appreciate the situation.ahh well alls well
man how does a song this good only have 10k hits? This always reminds of the LA riots even tho the song was around long before. LOL and fucknig ABA has 10million hits wonders will never cease LOL
Cool. The "hit" studio version is now considered a pop "guilty pleasure" but this RAW rendition rocks. Do I dare say they sound more like a band jamming in the garage here?
I meant the song was good, though it was about a guy named Al Capone, and this was telling the story of his corrupt activities in Chicago. So, I just wanted to clarify what I meant. The song itself has a good beat and Paper Lace is talented. It tells a tragic story about what Al Capone was doing in the 1920's. So, I'll say it's a good song about a bad guy.
@1962drob Actually, the lyrics of the song are inaccurate, since this British band had no real knowledge about the events. Al Capone's St. Valentine's Day massacre (to which the song implies) took place with a rival gang, and not the police. And it took place on the 'north side' of the city. There is no 'east side', as that would put everyone in the middle of Lake Michigan!
@aliasjonus Yes, I think we all know that the word 'gang' can have other interpretations. Most people know what was implied in my statement. Maybe I should have added the word 'criminal' before 'rival gang' so as not to confuse some of you.
@bze2nlz4 I do know that, but it's still a fun song to sing. And actually the inaccuracy of the tune is what made it fun to sing while you riding your bicycle that year I was 10 years old.
@bze2nlz4 Yes, and at the time the song was a hit, the mayor of Chicago (one of the Daleys I think) issued an official statement of resentment. I remember Casey Kasem mentioning it at the year end countdown in '74 and there was someone else in the press who brought it up too. In fact Paper Lace were legally barred from performing this song in the US. However, I think that was due to some other legal agreement and not lyric content.
@mrsgstd That's interesting...I'm trying to remember if I heard about that. During part of '74, I was living within blocks of that area of Chicago where the 'real' events of the song took place. And the mayor at the time was Richard J. Daley!
@bze2nlz4 According to Wikipedia (and we know that's always accurate!) drummer Phil Wright stated "I remember us being on Top Of The Pops and Elton John shaking my hand backstage and congratulating us on a US No.1, which he hadn't achieved at the time! The really strange thing was we couldn't even perform the song in America, due to some contractual hassles. And the label told us that they could make it a hit without us having to be there. We did a few radio stations, but that's all."
@LASchgos True, but it was never considered an official 'Side' of the city...there were only the three others. The East Side 'community' was geographically part of the far South Side, bordered by Indiana.
Yes it was...grew up in Roseland, went to Calumet Beach on the East Side...It is the 52nd ward...has its own zip code..so yes it's an "official" part of the city...If you want to learn more read about the 1937 Memorial Day Massacre at Republic Steel...It was between the police and steel workers wanting to unionize...the police shot about 100 people..
@LASchgos There are around 80 zip codes in the city...that goes more by community, which the East Side is considered to be (according to several sources). I lived on the North Side and also taught in the public school system in the 70's. The city system was divided into North, West, South, no East. I know about the Republic Steel event, but whoever wrote this song intended it to be about Capone. Anyway, I totally respect your loyalty to the East Side community....
Ok now I get where you're coming from...The original city map 1837? when Chicago was founded..got it...in that respect you are correct....However I was talking about the "East Side" as referred to in this song, in the 70's time frame and all the land that Chicago annexed from beginning to now. @YnnisGlytyr I agree. That was the year The Beatles recorded "Love Me Do" in England. Also that year The Beach Boys recorded "Surfin' Safari" in Southern California. I'm into rock music, that how I know these things. Did tons of research on rock groups of the past.
In the Movie, "American Graffitti", people would ask "Where were you in '62?" If anyone were to ask ME that, I'd say I was just a little baby lol.
Anyway, you're right!! 1962 was a good year to be born in!
I remember this song. I was in 7th grade when this was out. I was living in New York at the time and I remember it being Indian Summer for the longest time. In fact, the first week of November in 1974 it got up to 81 degrees one day. That was unusual. Anyway, nice song and video. Thanks Chris for sharing :)
