I don't think a lot of people are understanding what VidCon is going to be, though... It's not just a gathering. It's a conference. There will be seminars, sessions, tutorials, etc and overall a lot of opportunities to learn, not just hang out.
Yes, we're paying, and yes, we're in a recession. The money is going towards paying for the presenters (both YouTube and industry) to stay somewhere (which isn't something new. A LOT of conferences pay to house their speakers, on top of the fee the presenters themselves charge) and also so they can fly out.
It also goes to renting out the space, the equipment for AV, the cost for the people who run AV & tech and such.
I really just think a lot of people are trying to stir the pot because they have nothing better to do, but that's just my opinion. And I think that instead of making such an unnecessary fuss about this like thetalesend has (trying to hold legal actions against the conference and all) people could redirect their efforts to not only helping the conference find sponsers to defray the cost, but also to work with transportation officials to find a more reasonable way to get people moved.
@ObviouslyBenHughes I realize that these comments are two months old, but I just stumbled across this video and I want to thank you for spreading your insightful comments. I've watched too many of these complainy anti-vidcon videos. Also, I hadn't heard of thetalesend thing. My word!
