@Zureal That thing in the back is a filter so you do not have to change the water everyday and he may live in a place where it is warm all year so he may not need to spend more money on a filter.
He needs more space and plants as well as a heater to keep water temp at around 80*F. In a tank that small, there needs to be 100% water changes everyday to prevent ammonia poisoning and burns. Bettas are not meant to live in anything less than 2.5 gallons. They live in rice patties, which are huge.
@mwmt the pet stores keep them like that for temporary time frames and technically they should not even be keeping them in such small containers. Betta need a minimum of 2.5 gallons like monofice466 has already stated. however the temperature should be around 72-80*
@aluetkids do you know why pet stores cant have all bettas in 2.5 gallons? it costs more. the cost of keeping the bettas in bigger tanks vs. the price they make them. If you had to spend let's say... 20 dollars of electricity for a betta (heater included) then the betta would have to be higher than that price. Trust me. I wish I could do the same if I were to open a pet store :) probably still will lol.
@aluetkids True, but then go with a sure-fire-betta-loving-breeders :p. All my bettas, if under 2 gallons are usually quarantine (AQ salt treatments in 1 gallon, clean water daily) and have nice and warm water. All other bettas are 2.5 gallons and up, with heaters, or at least have toasty water... I personally, if I owned a pet or fish store, would rather have the money to set up a perfect betta paradise. No bowls, no cups, all tanks :)
how big is your tank and where did you get your heater. I am having a really hard time finding a heater for my baby fantail, and I NEED one like pronto, my house is like 66 degrees and its the middle of winter, and all I have is a desk lamp that lets off heat. I have to get him a bigger tank but for now I need a small heater like that one..
A general rule of thumb is not to feed your betta more than an amount the size of his eye, since that's how big his stomach is. I feed mine little pellets, 3 or 4 pellets a day. I don't know how big your flakes are though, I never could get mind to eat flakes.

Very beautiful fish. the tank looks kind of small, but you have a filter from what I can see, the water is clear and he does have a plant.
