Btw did anyone notice when Ahab was stabbing Moby and chanting out," From hells heart I stab at thee", there is a rope wrapped around a harpoon right next to him and the knot or the part wrapped around it was shaped like a heart
@SSArcher11 That part about Starbuck wasn't in the book. An added touch by either John Huston or Ray Bradbury and I think a nice one. Overall, a good adaptation of the novel though Richard Basehart seems a little old for Ishmael.
Did they have colour cameras ? Actually the camerawork won an award, they worked very hard to make it more grey or sepia-toned, rather than the glaring brash technicolour normally available at the time. It's meant to be grim and grey. You wouldn't guess some of this was shot in the Canary Islands, would you ?
He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it.
According to the IMDB, this film is the 6th highest ranked and the 1st is a Animated epics tv 2000 film, with Tim Guinee, William Hootkins & Rod Steiger.
God I hate looking up movies I enjoyed watching as a kid and seeing all these "Baaw movies today are stoopied these movies are masterpieces no matter how shitty they might be. They must be masterpieces because they are old" kind of comments... really takes away from the fun of watching these videos.
On the other hand: I loved this movie, still love it, nice video.
Just like now in the modern age, this goes to show again, how stupid "we" are humans are when being out in nature.......You see it all the time, a man killed by a bear, or a hunter being attacked by an animal... Pets that should be in the wild turning on us.... Etc.... We should leave Nature alone. This movie is great especially the book, and a fine example of art.
All that most maddens and torments; all that stirs up the lees of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby-Dick. He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it.
This was a great movie - far better than the crap being turned out today by Hollywood. They have lost the ability to tell a story with this kind of skill, and resort to CGI nonsense, bad acting, political messages, glorifying of perversion and dope, and just plain idiocy. This was a masterpiece!
@spraymalathionjerry I liked this one better than the one made in 1998. The score is great as well. Do you know I must have laughed 1,000 times at the part where the whale turns on the boat with Captain Ahab and snapped it in half with his jaws. Did you see his funny looking mouth? It was like the whale just got tired of Captain Abab and said " Here I Come!"
Funny thing is that this movie is often criticised for the way in which it portrays whales, when in fact it shows the whale to be very intelligent, way beyond its real intelligence.I think any man who had been maimed by an animal would feel this way and project malice of intent onto the creature. This is a great Gothic movie GP as always lives the role. I am amazed by the fearlessness of these old Whalers, it scares me to watch it even in a movie
@BaalZobel - It's silly to criticize it for being unrealistic given the fact that neither the movie nor the book is really about whales - it's about a man destroyed by his own desire for revenge. I actually thought that was Albert Finney in the role of Ahab...when I found out it was Gregory Peck, I face-palmed. lol
@BaalZobel Well Moby dick was partially inspired by an actual event which involved the whale ship ESSEX which was indeed rammed and sunk by a bull sperm whale. Whale's aren't stupid, and when being followed and attacked by men its no wonder the whale acted aggressively. Particularly bull sperm whale's are aggressive and defensive naturally and actually grew much larger than the modern sperm whale's of today before heavy hunting brought them to such low numbers.
@BaalZobel It also took a lot longer to successfully kill a whale in the older days of whaling which often resulted in a whale that wasn't yet dead. full of harpoons and completely pissed and in pain. Death was something all whalers knew was possible in this kind of job. Many whalers died doing this kind of thing.
@BaalZobel Not to give you any grief here by the way. In my honest opinion whales and dolphins do exhibit impressive intelligence and I think some people often overlook or underestimate them.
After reading the novel, the film only brings it to life. A classic through and through. Peck's performance as Ahab is simply mesmorizing and stunning
Watch the birds!Birds! The birds!!!!He risses!!!!!!Go after him!!!!!Pull in!!!!!!Let the men go!!!!!!Pull in men closer!!!!He will not escape!!!Damn you whale!!!!!!From hell I stab heart at the,for hate sake I spit my last breath at the you damnit WHALE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, you had both good and bad movies then. You have good and... terrible movies now. But there are still good movies, and a few diamonds pop up every now and then. Same as 50-60 years ago. The film business hasn't changed as much as you think.
@neurotyrant Gregory Peck (who played Captain Ahab) said that he wasn't very proud of his preformance in this, but I beg to differ. I think he did just fine. A classic film from the 1950s.
the way the whale looks back at ahab always freaks me out

Notice how the Quaker Starbuck inherits Ahab's fanaticism and thus dooms everyone.
