I think most underground techno bands just responded to the general trend instead of trying to make smth different.
I have a Unit Moebius album titled "Work" and I think its mediocre from beginning to end. Techno has always been about total creative stagnation (compared to good ambient stuff like The Irresistible Force and FSOL or good drill'n'bass stuff like Squarepusher).
I enjoy both ambient stuff like FSOL and techno like Unit Moebius. UM has a great dark psychedelic sound to them, I think they are very creative, but it's in the subtitles of the timbres and atmospheres. Repetition and minimalism is a departure point for producing the this type of sound. If you find it simple and boring, then don't listen to it. It's not like techno is imposing itself on anyone. And hey not all UM is great, just like FSOL, they have some mediocre stuff.

I would rather state clear artistic choices than limited creativity.
Also the philosophical area of freedom and limitation is clearly present here.

do you even have a clue what Unit Moebius ment for many artists and the whole underground (acid/techno) scene?
