  • This is my favorite muppet song. It truly shows what this movie is about, and life even.

  • Gets me every time...

  • "There's not a word yet, for old friends that just met"- melts my heart every time.

  • We're all a furry little blue weirdo at heart. Love you, Gonzo.

  • ;(

  • Good old classic Gonzo. You'll never be replaced by Rachael Yamagata!

  • Kermit and Gonzo were always tied for my favorite Muppet. After hearing this song....sorry, Kermie.

  • This song **always** makes me cry for many reasons. It touches me deeply. Gonzo was and still is my fave Muppet.

  • Gonzo sang this after he flew away on a bunch of balloons.... Maybe th3ey intended for Gonzo to be an alien all along?

  • Still gets to me after all these years.

  • There's nobody who can do this song more justice than sweet, thought provoking Gonzo! I always related to this weirdo misfit and loved his wavering voice! I also enjoyed Wimbley from Fraggle Rock, who was obviously done by the same voice over person or puppeteer! ;). Yes, this song still touches me too!

  • This silly thing always makes me cry. Doggone it. And I was only listening, not even watching.

  • I like just about everything on the Green Album, but I have to say that I cannot stand Rachael Yamagata's version of this...just an atrocity. Love this original, though. I'm with lilbrodge with the "takes you back to a similar time when we were all kids."

  • I am on a Muppets trip after seeing the new movie. I love that I can find all of these videos on here!

  • Who is the heartless bastard who gave this a thumb down?

  • @jclyon41 yeah what the heck??

  • Gonzo sings about sehnsucht (wiki it)

  • One of the best songs ever written.

  • my dad used to sing this song to me i feel so sad im crying and the rainbow song to my sister sarah im crying man why so sad WAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • that one dislike is probably from someone who did a cover on this song, but realized that they could not do it better than a little blue weirdo. :-)

  • wow i love this song and yet it makes me feel so sad. i too want to go back there someday. :-(

  • my mom used to sing this to me b4 i went to bed.... i tear up every time...

  • 22 years old, in the military and this song makes me tear up just about every time I hear it.

  • I love all the Muppets, but Gonzo has always had a soft spot in my heart. He, and Robin, too, have some really touchingly beautiful songs. This one has always tugged on my heartstrings.

  • There's not a word yet for old friends who've just met.

That's the line that stays with me. Every time. <3 I wish I could put my feelings into words a fraction as well as this. His little, raspy voice, Rowlf playing his harmonica curled up in his bag, Miss Piggy harmonizing with surprising sentimentality, and Fozzie for once just helping, not saying a word... so peaceful and heartfelt. It's so hard to believe they're not alive.

  • @TheWarnerSister Then don't believe it, The Muppets to me are as real as the nose on my face.

  • For all his insanity, Gonzo always seems to have these really sweet moments too.

  • Anybody else figure out that Gonzo was an alien just from this song?

  • Seriously, there's one (1) dislike... that person has no heart...

  • This songs just takes you back to a similar time when we were all kids. I remember listen to this song and start to tear up as a kid and I still do now that im grown. Just classic and Jim Henson vision was the greatest just wonder what kind of classic he would of done if he was alive today.

  • @lilbrodge this song tears me up no matter where or when i hear it. such heartfelt lyrics, i want this played at my funeral. i'm not kidding.

  • @lilbrodge This song seems to strike a deep chord in anyone who had been considered a misfit. I know it always resonated really deeply with me and even to this day I can't sing it without my voice cracking. Thank you, Henson. We miss you dearly.

  • i would like to add to all those who share my love of this song.. i cant seem to quantify it or explain it. it just holds a special place in my life

  • not a day of my life has gone by I think were I do not miss Jim Henson

  • Happy Birthday Jim Henson!

  • I have thought about this song often in the last 10 years. Can't believe I just saw it on You Tube. This looks familiar, vaguely familiar...it tugs at my heart to see Gonzo sing it. The words and context of this song are still so heartfelt today. Love that.

  • I love this song. I can't put it into words, but that's the best I can come up with. Simply beautiful.

  • This scene, in context of the movie in its whole, is so unexpectedly tender and deep. I love this tune, and it evokes such a simple sentimentality about me every single time I hear it. Makes me miss my childhood, AND Jim Henson.

  • I fly a starflight ultralight and this song really hits home with me. It hints at the emotion I feel somedays when I have been away from flying for too long. Loved it.

  • This made me cry....

  • Time to hunt down the one person who disliked this and smack some sense into them! D:

  • I miss Gonzo having this child-like voice.

  • the most underrated song of all time. Gets me every time.

  • =) there is now a word for old friends who've just met: Gonzo. This song is one of the most touching on the planet. To the lovers and dreamers out there, God bless.

  • Add another to the Gonzo group..!! Love this song and made me tear up listening to it. Just like Jim Henson, I would love to have it played/sang at my funeral. :)

  • Rainbow Connection gets all the publicity and covers, but I think this is the best song from the Muppet Movie.

  • I'm with the Gonzo group too!

  • I nearly cried watching this!

  • You can just visit, but I plan to stay.

  • One person has a heart of stone and no room for Gonzo.

  • rachael yamagata's version of this is AWESOME...suggest you go to npr and have a listen

  • @shepisgod her version is beautiful. i also suggest you listen, great track.

  • Count me in with the Gonzo Club. :)

  • You can really see the love that Jim Henson had for these "puppets," the life he breathed into them. To a generation, they were real and true friends. I yearn for the simpler times, and hope that this new generation grows to love the Muppets as much as I did (and still do).

  • This song and many other muppets classics are actually going to be covered on "The Green Album". I can't wait for it, and the new movie.

  • @Oviraptor78 I already pre-ordered the Green Album. The covers are really terrific. I have already listened to the whole album a dozen times for free on NPR. I also googled all the original versions of the songs to see where they came from.

  • Anyone else think Tom Waits could have written this??

  • @ekemeister1 I would give all sorts of money to make that cover happen. I can totally hear it.

  • i can relate to Gonzo so well, wanting to fit in but always ignored. A little on the strange side and no one knowing how to relate. but never gave up on who i was

  • No matter how old I get, Gonzo is my favorite Muppet, because of this song. It breaks my heart everytime. So nice to see a little blue weirdo singing for all of us weirdos.

  • 1 person cried so hard that their tears hit the dislike button.

  • @thkaal1 Muppets From Space didn't remove any of that. It strengthened it, and if you can't see that then you weren't paying attention. When finally given the opportunity to rejoin his own kind, he realizes for the first time that he does have a family, not the aliens, but Kermit, Rizzo, Fozzie and all the others. Gonzo is still different, but he has finally made peace with that. It was a wonderful character development piece for Gonzo that Jim Henson would have loved.

  • @thkaal1 Anything that has happened with regards to The Muppets, since Jim Henson's death, is not legitimate, as far as I'm concerned. Gonzo's affinity for female chickens always led me to believe he was more a bird than anything else. He looks more avian than alien, in my opinion. If kids enjoy the new Muppets that''s fine. I wouldn't want to take that from them. But for our generation, the real Muppets live in the past and in our memories. No one can take that from you, or any of us.

  • @Jonwood74 I don't agree with that. I'm 29, and I believe Jim Henson would have wanted us to continue to enjoy new material from the Muppets, not let them sit there and collect dust in our memories.

  • @surfingthechaos I'm aware that Jim Henson did want the muppets to continue after his death. However, that doesn't mean they've been able to capture the same magic or innocence that he did. In my opinion they haven't come close. Jim Henson provided more than just a voice, he imbued the Muppets with his unique personality, his soul. I don't think you can just replace that. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one from my generation that feels this way. But you're entitled to your opinion.

  • @Jonwood74 Jim Henson was a one of a kind genius, and things will never be exactly the same as they were when he was alive, but that's what makes life so precious. Is Muppets From Space as good as some of Jim Henson's best works? No, but it is a good film with a lot of heart and a lot of laughs nonetheless, and I personally feel that Jim would have thought so too.

  • Damn it. I never knew why, but I always cry at this song. No reason. I just do.

  • Such a sweet song.I Love the muppets hugs sharitsa

  • Gonzo Friggin' Rules! I used to play this song on the record player over and over again when I was a kid....God I was a depressed little bastard lol. Actually the entire album from the Muppet Movie was fantastic. I don't think anybody is capable of doing genuinely sweet things like this anymore....maybe Pixar.

  • This always makes me think of the Doctor, remembering Gallifrey and all of his companions.

  • @jelliclestar You just made my night

  • This is one of my favourite songs ever.

  • Its actually a very clever song, as in "Muppets in Space", Gonzo finally finds out that he's actually and alien... :-)

  • I wish I could find this version of the song on iTunes. I've loved it since I was a kid.

  • @thkaal1 that is the greatest comment I have ever read. It brought tears to my eyes. Call me emotional, but that is so true. Took the words right out of all of our mouths. Thank you.

  • This is also 1 of my favorite muppets songs, . Love the muppets. Hugsz sharitsa

  • @poinyears Why so?

  • Never overlook the fact that Rainbow Connection and I'm Going To Go Back There Someday are AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL songs just cause they're sung by Muppets - actually its the Muppets that make them so amazing!!!! YAY Jim Henson!!

  • Sometimes I feel like an outcast in this world--I don't have that many friends, and sometimes no matter how hard I try, things don't work out, and I'm a bit strange--in a good way of course. But I love my life and the few good friends that I have. There's a lot of people like Gonzo out there. And this song makes me miss a lot of things from the past, especially my recently departed grandparents. But they're in a better place now and together for eternity.

  • @thkaal1 Holy crap. I never write responses to anything on Youtube, but that was brilliant. You couldn't be anymore right about that.

  • Jimmy of Joe Raposo's band could be doing the guitar for Fozzie.

  • There was also bells in this song.

  • Is Dave Goelz still performing Gonzo the Great?

  • @JGCooney Yes he is :)

  • I sang this to each one of my babies as I rocked them to sleep. That and Rainbow Connection. I want Gonzos Song played at my funeral cuz I am going to go there someday

  • @imaypuke You're an amazing mother for singing those warm songs to your kids.

  • @imaypuke It was played at my Oldest cousin's funeral about two weeks ago.

  • I dedicate this to my old friend Jill.

  • I dedicater this to my old friend Jill.

  • Dave Goelz is the voice and genius behind gonzo.... this song was written by Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher........."there's not a word yet,.... for old friends who've just met"......One of the best lyrics paired with melody ever. Bless Henson, Oz, Goelz, Williams, Ascher......... and..... try an "F' harmonica.... or a chromatic one............ or maybe just go with the flow.......... you could play harp to that song with a 'G' 'D' 'C' etc harp... im on the same page with Nexx

  • How does Fozzie and Rowlf play instruments in this song, and is the harmonica part written for "C" Harmonica?

  • @JGCooney please tell me you're not being serious...

  • Gonzo's always been my favorite muppet, so weird but there's more to him than what it seems.

  • Damn Gonzo, why so sad?

  • i just loved this vid gonzo iz and alwayz will be one of my favorite muppets. (Points at you evilly then runs away)

  • @thkaal1 yep i agree.i only listen to it once a year or so ,about 5 times in a row. kind of a fix i guess. i sing a lot of songs but this one i just tisten to

  • Oh soooooo sweet.love the muppets hugs shari

  • I think its a metaphor for life, just when you think you're all grown up, you realize all you had when you were young. Reliving your past... Will you go back there? Do you belong there? A friend of mine feels its about someone reasoning against or for suicide. I hope its not, but can see it either way. The magic of this song is the interpretability of it. And of course it's beauty. And well that Gonzo is actually the smartest one of them all!

  • @2q2bu The beauty of a great song, and this is one, is that it speaks to you. The meaning is what you make of it. It may be about a time, place, or even a feeling. Many will hear one message and make a connection. Other's may get a different message and feel a connection in a different way, yet just as deeply, if not more, than the intended meaning. While this tune can be melancholic, I think the suicide interpretation is a stretch and says more of the listener than the song. Time for a hug.

  • I've been singing this song, almost my whole life... and I hope I never stop

  • Haunting

  • I wish I could find the Jim Henson Memorial videos, especially the Muppet medley. That version of this song was my favorite.

  • gonzo's the man

  • I saw a blog post that said that this song could be an analogy for heaven. Regardless of any religious meaning, I do love this song

  • man i wish i knew Gonzo in real life, hehe dont you ?

  • i played guitar on this song.what a great life it has given to me

    guitarernie

  • Im a little blue weirdo too...

  • @MrAnybody me too! have to agree with thkaal1, we all are little blue weirdos ... some try to hide it and others accept it --- and to think kermit thought it wasnt easy being green LOL

  • I feel like this song describes me and my life perfectly. I'm a little blue weirdo, and the idea of "going back there someday" just... perfect.

  • There isn't a word yet for old friend's who've just met.

  • There isn't a word yet for old friend's who've just met.

  • 1st Class!!

  • "...We're flyin', not walkin'..." thats my fav line

  • Im singing this for my grad

  • I wish Paul Williams would be acknowledged as one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Just because a puppet sings them doesn't mean they aren't incredibly beautiful.

in fact, they're even more incredibly beautiful than they may have been otherwise.

  • I think there is a word.

    That word should be 'gonzo'.

  • I wish I could do Gonzo's singing voice. Sadly, only a rough version of his speaking voice.

I had a BBS Ansi of Kermit crying, from a DOS BBS from Decatur IL, from my best friend's dad's BBS.

I made it beep the refrain, and would cry when it got done beeping in it's rough square wave tonal sound.

  • @thkaal1 ty for putting into words how ive always felt

  • it is so hard to believe anyone could hate this song. :(( it is so moving. I tear up listening to it. it means so much to me.

  • @drumfreek31 i honestly think they had to click the wrong button, i don't think that's possible....

  • I like this song a lot, even though his voice isn't exactly to die for. But it's so... simple, his voice. Honest (it's honest, I mean). It's not the best, but it's him.

Too bad that this is probably the basis for Muppets in Space. (shudder)

  • @yaloolah42

Muppets in space was the result of bad writers or writers with not enough time to make a good enough back story.

But then, have all the back stories of the Muppets ever quite meshed well enough?

  • @Nash1a

Couldn't have said it better myself. So glad to find other people love this song as much as I do. I thought I was the only one . . . .

    @ArchibaldClumpy

Gonzo does have an old soul. As my English mother-in-law, bless her, would have said, 'He's been here before.'

'There's not a word yet / For old friends who've just met'. Love these lines, just love them. So very true. . . .

  • Gonzo has an old soul.

  • T.T So awesome.

  • I love this song because it makes me think of Jim Henson - one of God's gifts to us all.

  • This was my favorite song as a kid and it still totally breaks my heart but makes me smile... thanks.

  • @thkaal1

That was a most insightful and thoughtful and poignant response.

So True. Beautiful. Blessings, and Namaste.

  • This was probably the most original songs of all time. Gonzo was mostly a comic character but this song about sensing something wonderful that you just can't put a finger on is just so soulful and it reaches you because it is something we all in one way or another can relate too. That something that fills us with wonder and fills us with longing but perhaps something we have yet to see.

  • Wow... I though I was the only one who was touched by this song. "HI Everybody"

I feel like I just joined a very strange group.

This song reached me because as a teen and a young man, I really did feel like the night sky was drawing me to it. this reminds me of another little lyric:

    Life's like a movie

    Write your own ending.

    Keep believing

    Keep pretending.

We've done just what we set out to do

Thanks to the lovers the dreamers and you.

  • @thkaal1 amazing how animal puppets can be so human is it not

  • I love this song. <3

  • I think I liked gonzo even more than Kermit.

    And that's really something.

  • I always tear up when I listen to this, but on more than one occasion, I have downright wept. Not quietly, either. This is and will always be one of the most beautiful, poignant songs I've ever heard. There's just something so wistful about it.

You'll always be my favourite muppet, Gonzo. <3

  • @funandfancyfloatzel Me too!

  • omg...something about this song is SO SAD! i started to cry!

  • @MrJonk1969 me too

  • @thkaal1 You're so right. I can see myself in Gonzo more than in any other Muppet.

  • i AM going to back there someday

  • Kermit's dialog with himself that goes with this is very touching as well.

  • @isartam It is. I wish someone would put it on YouTube.

One of the most moving moments in any movie I've ever seen. And from a children's movie!

  • classic.

  • As if Jim were singing from the heavens .... hold onto love like invisible strings.

  • @thkaal1 Gonzo may have never quite knew what he was, but he always knew who he was.

  • I always knew there was a reason he was my favorite. Nice.

  • It's an amazing song sung by one of the funniest characters in the series, and in some ways it just makes it all the more heartful, it makes me think of something we long for but don't recognize, it reminds me of a Hikau I think by Richard Wright where he says something that reminds him of something he cannot remember, this adds the emotion to that longing.

  • LOOL

  • CRY..!!

  • I have to admit, even though I can't watch it now, the muppets were something special. They were really something.

  • Why can't you watch them now?

  • For all his craziness, Gonzo seems to have a truly lyrical, even romantic soul. I just hope a chick like Camila can appreciate that.

  • @DrJekyll38 It seems that the weirdest people are also the most sentimental. Sort of like the tears of clown.

  • I really shouldn't be listening to this when I've been drinking. It always fills my eyes with tears...

  • thkaal1, your comment cracks me up!

  • Comment removed

  • I LOVE this song, Gonzo was always my favorite muppet and I always found this song to be so beautiful, thanks for sharing

  • this brought me back to my childhood....so nice and so close to my soul....thanks!

  • <3

    pure magic

  • hope so....

  • i AM going to go back ther someday

  • Gonzo was always one of my favorites

and this a perfect example of why

    I love this song

  • Only they cut the best part of Gonzo's song ending... he look's up at the star filled sky and say's, "look at that." play this after i die......thnx.

  • My favorite muppet song....Gonzo..

    "look at that."
