Wait, is Ed White the command pilot? Or is Mcdivit, it sounds more like Jim cause he is sitting in the left seat, but, why doesnt the commander do the EVA? Just asking
@awey271 Not exactly sure why but I don't think any command pilot did an EVA until Apollo 11 and this was the basis for Buzz Aldrin's reasoning that he should of been the first man to step on the moon.
@awey271 Only the Apollo programme had it's CDR do EVA's, as the CDR was the best man for the job of landing the LEM. But with the Shuttle programme and the ISS programme, the CDR would not do an EVA under normal circumstances. Apollo is the only exception to this rule.
@Entei2000 Japan, Europe and many others have already went! In these days of international cooperation, a country need not develop its own spacecraft. Countries could buy rides on SpaceX, Boeing or SNC vehicles now, and there is talk of European astronauts joining Americans on their next voyages to the Moon adn beyond!
One of the greatest moments in the history of spaceflight, right up there with Apollo 8's 1st moon orbit by mankind, and of course Apollo 11's historic landing on the moon itself! Spaceflight is such a noble endevour, too bad NASA is giving up on space, it makes me sad :( especially watching videos like this, too bad mankind is becoming to petty and selfish for great endeavours in space like those of the 50's, 60's, and 70's.
From Hawaii, on the 46th anniversary of this unprecedented historic event, June 3rd 2011, I am celebrating this milestone in manned spaceflight. Heartfelt thanks zoeconnoly for posting this :-) !! My greatest wish is that many others would take the time to acknowledge this monumental achievement in spite of this ultrashort attention span society that dominates the US today. Ed whites EVA is a huge triumph in human kinds efforts in space exploration, I wish it gets a lot more recognition than it
The space program was the last major achievement and the finest by the greatest generation. It took courage to do those things for the first time and they made sure to do it right. They were all for trying, but moreso all for succeeding. That generation gave us something and we have yet to rediscover it.
A great moment in the history of American manned spaceflight. Sadly, we will see it end this year with the last shuttle flight. All thanks to President's Obama appalling lack of vision, he is killing NASA's manned space program. Funny, he said in the State of the Union he would not accept 2nd place for America. I guess he didn't mean in an area of technological advancement we, along with the Russians, pioneered. Ed White himself is turning over in his grave, I'm sure.
I agree there was a lack of visions there. Every president after Kennedy lost interest in the space program--at least in a meaningful way. We are talking almost 50 years of this. You need an exampe, lets talk about the Saturn V's of Apollos 18, 19, and 20 that were allowed to rot to save 40 million dollars...
The sound of the moving spacecraft at the end is not very scientific ;-)

I thought he had trouble getting back in. That his space suit was overinflated from the pressure differential...

The Russian space walk and first man in space was fake as hell, so Ed White was the first EVA. Very awesome!

@yesiamawizardjonny Be a little bit respectful for the cosmonauts of Soviet Union. They risked their lives to achieve what they did in spaceflight.
