This fantastic song combining the awesome talents of Queen Emmylou and The Band, about a woman losing her great love to another "Queen" can mean different things to different people. It gets me where I live.
@Dean600 Yes, the lead singer of one of the most influential Americana/Country/Best damned American music bands ever.......is not digging a country tune. Short of insults....it seems you don't really get it, sir.
Ginger,I dedicate this to you,I know you were won by another man,but I will always have the memories, but,if this were a hundred and fiffty years ago,he would have had to answer the demand for satisfaction, and dule under the Delaround oaks for the rights to your hand.It is ironic that your first child is mnamed Evangiline.
@fredsalmond I hate to break the news to people, but even the best musicians often record the vocal track in a recording studio where the acoustics and equipment are optimal for the best sound, then do the video in a film studio or a concert stage to get the best pictures. I spent several days working as an extra in a movie coming out next January. The performers ALL lipsyncing to their own voices and instruments that they recorded themselves. That's just how movies are made.
If you look at the angle change at around 2:09 its quite obvious they are miming as there is clearly a cut there from Danko not playing to Danko playing.
This is hilarious. Watch at 2:40, you can tell they dubbed in some stuff while mixing the movie. Clearly Richard's voice was put in there at the end and it sounds horribly goofy but awesome. Thanks Scorsese!
This is musicianship at its highest caliber. The drummer is playing banjolin, the bassist is playing fiddle, the keyboardist is playing drums, the sax player is playing accordion, and 3 different vocalists sing verses with a 4th vocalist singing harmony in the chorus.
Eram student cand am vazut filmul, de vreo 5 ori!!! Nu pot uita ca veneau batrânei care paraseau sala dupa 10 minute. Fusesera pacaliti de numele filmului:"Ultimul vals"
The precise moment the Emmylou bug bit me. One of several numbers recorded for the Scorcese documentary by guests who couldn't make the concert (the Staple Singers another), but they still recorded it live -really live.
gawd i love this woman! been in love with Emmylou over 30 yrs; this was such a powerhouse production, two legends in their own rite, teaming up for unique performance; i dug Richard Manuel on drums
This song is based on a historical event that occurred in 1755, in Nova Scotia. The British who took possession of Acadia had a distrust of French settlers, so they deported thousands of French men to the French territory of Louisiana. Many women were left behind, and had to watch their husbands sent down the river, never to return.
A statue was erected in the Bay of Fundy, Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia, of a saddened "Evangeline." These dispossed French Acadians became known as Cajuns, in Lousiana!
@Wizcrafts Thanks for history lesson! I'm french, and ev'rything about cajuns(from acadians) and their deportation called "Le grand dérangement" (which means "the great disturbing", not a joke!) touches me!
@grski88 They both just have to shake hands. Sure Robbie acted like a dick and sure Levon's still mad, but they just gotta shake hands, talk to Garth and try and get something together. I'm honestly mad that I may look back in the history books and may see that a bad Madonna impersonator known for her Poker Face will be the sign of the 2000's instead of good music like the band.
BTW....Emmylou never made the concert (story I heard was her tour bus broke,,,but we hear so many stories, eh?)...this was filmed on a sound stage after the concert. Still one of my favorites from the movie.
We got Rick Danko playing the violin (maybe fiddle, whats the difference, if there one, he probably played them both), Levon Helm on some string instrument with four strings (someone fill me in), Garth Hudson on a \n accordian and Richard Manual on the drums and Robbie Robertson on a big ass guiartar. And they are playing backup - BACKUP - to Emmylou Harris. They are THE BAND!!!
Also this song wasnt played at the live show, it was added to the movie after because the band wanted to pay tribute to the country influence in their music. Also with The Weight they were able to represent their gospel influence by featuring the Staple Singers.
If you watch the making of the Last Waltz documentary Martin Scorsese and Robbie Robertson explain why they shot this song and The Weight on a soundstage. First reason was they wanted Marty to have a chance to use his directing talents which he was very limited in doing during the live show.
What a wonderful piece of music History. Most of those fellas from the Band have since passed on.Good to see and hear Emmylou in her prime. That Piano player was keeping good time on those drums lol!!!
As the great Waylon said of Emmylou: She stands so pretty. And I think her voice is like an angel with grit. She's as beautiful today with her silver hair as she was back then singing with the Band. Love Levon Helms too. Such emotion he puts out in this number. Thanks for this.
What a piece of creative genius - rock'n'roll on accordian, fiddle, and mandolin! And of course Emmylou is one of the few women in the world my wife would ever have to worry about....(!)
@ummitsevie Think I'm gonna name my daughter Evangeline... Such a beautiful name for such a beautiful story and such a beautiful song :-) This is bliss in music!!!
