what year? , my r53 had the same noise and it was the alternator, ... i tought it was oil regulator or something in transmition, but.... it was simply the alternator, the bearings was scrap.. and the stator was toutchinh the rotor...
Sounds like floating lifters. Solution for this problem would be to not over rev your car in the first place. But if you have it now your springs are probably compressed more then usual from over or high revving alot. You need to rebuild the head with new spings and get it miked so you can shim it properly if its hydrolic lifters, Which i believe it is because its OHC. So need new springs and miked so you can put the proper size shims in the hydrolic lifters.
I've got the EXACT same sound on cold start up. BMW/MINI had better fix it! I've just had the "tensioner" replaced. If this doesn't do it, then they had better replace the entire cam system as I've seen other R56S' to end the issue.
its just the auto choke mate, It automatically increases the engine speed at idle, when the engine is cold. Once the engine has reached sufficent temp, it will disengage.
Mine does this when its very cold, when it warms up it goes. My dealer said it was normal. It makes sense if the engine is cold, takes a few minutes for all the oils to move around the engine etc. I always give mine a few minutes to warm up on cold mornings. Then its fine!
Oh I know I know, its because you own a car that has a motor as to which is almost IDENTICAL to a neon motor, thats right. the mini shares the same motor/tranny as most common neons you see on the road.
No, no, no, MINI's made prior to 2007 feature the Chrysler Tritec engine and this is the engine you speak of when you mention the neon. The MINI seen above is an R56 S (2007+) and it features the I6 Prince engine made by a joint-venture between BMW and PSA Peugeot / Citroen. The transmission in the 2007+ models is the Aisen 6 Speed and its quite nice actually. The old tranny was a Getrag.... Get your shit straight before you start making comments..... FUCK!
Hum that's really funny because my mini cooper s is having the same problem...I'm actually going to bring it in this Monday to check it out and yeah it does sound like a diesel. I guess we shall see what becomes of my car.
@fast2gi getrag makes the manual and asin warner makes the auto for the 07+

Buddy....it sounds like your engine's knocking a little bit...unless it's a diesel which I highly doubt.

Just took my early 2008 S in for this problem.
They replaced the timing chain, tensioner, sprocket and guides. It was also noisy under acceleration even when warm.
There was also a hesitation under acceleration.

My 09 sounds the same on cold mornings. It is not a diesel; it's the 1.6 turbo.
The solution? Get the extended warranty or get rid of the car before the basic warranty is over.
I'm going with the latter.
Apparently, if you want good German engineering, you have to pay a premium cause at this price level, it's crap.

If you like to high rev try putting in titanum springs.

Looks like Mini now has a fix for this involving a new chain tensioner. If anyone is still suffering get the car booked into your dealer.

@kevkbuk Happened to my MINI and it was the chain tensioner... was under warrantee, which was good :)

NO.
Take the car to your dealer as soon as possible.
BMW have a PUMA-fix for this issue.
Cam-tensioner and chain will probably have to be replaced.

PUMA-fix? what do you mean... Have you had this done? and has it fixed your car?
