Once the camera was rolling, he asked himself,"How would an Alien-Being deal with this particular item if it had just been handed to him, & he suddenly discovered it was edible?" The director thought it was Genius & kept the tape rolling. The ONLY reason I am aware of this is, I happened to catch one of the late night talk shows where he was asked about it.
