You should learn how to tin your iron 1st and foremost as your tip will disentegrate if you aren't carefull. You can get a long life out of your tips.

Who taught you how to solder and why? I didn't need to learn how till I was nearly 20 and my guitar was acting up. But as young as you are what exactly do you need to solder?
