they are trailers, they get heavier and they have to try and pull them. you get the general idea

it's the sled. basically it's a trailer with a sliding weight on it that gets progressively heavier as they advance down the track.

if they can pull it 300 feet (about 91 meters) it's called a full pull. if no one can get a full pull, the guy with the farthest pull wins. if multiple guys get a full pull, they have them pull again with a heavier sled to see who goes farther.

great sport is right. the efficiency development of these engines may not appear to be green friendly, but in the long run these guys and all racers and motorsports competitors do more to develope clean burning engines than anyone seems to give them credit for. New combustion chamber and pump designs are born from this. It just looks a lot dirtier than it is. I'll get worried about global warming if I see those big trees in the background start falling from soot.

lol, BIODIESEL is DIESEL FUEL with additives. As I stated b-4 I own a truck and SOMETIMES run bio-diesel. The particulate matter these tractors generate is AWFUL! What do u think, They only run on soybean oil,NO!! There is MOSTLY diesel in those tanks, and very little soy oil! and yes it smells like french fries..

FWIW, I have respect for the John Deeres - I've NEVER seen a Deere break while working. I've seen them try like anything and just not be the right machine for the task, but NEVER seen a Deere fail while doing its job.

They are NOT running Bio Diesel. These guys are scared of ruining the plungers in their 15.000 $ fuel pumps with that stuff.

The "pollution" though is rather minimal. A single run of those tractors takes about 3 to 5 liters of diesel and the same amount of water. Water turns into steam ... that's where the smoke comes from, colored by diesel fumes.

25 runs x 5 liters= 125 liters. 5 fans going to the event by cars have burnt more fuel.
