UH Manoa is a good school to go to. There is a lot of ground breaking research that is going on at UH Manoa Im trasferring from UH Hilo next Fall. There is more things to do there and fun things, but the experience you will get there at UH Manoa is priceless I say go for it. BUT IF YOUR GOING FOR SCHOOL !! you need to come with that mind set that your there for SCHOOL and not just because its hawai'i. Don't get me wrong you can have fun and all that but school comes first. Hope this helps.

I just got accepted to go to Hawaii to major in Japanese. This is the only vid I've found that mentions majoring in Japanese. Can you tell me anything about the level of education of the classes, what I can expect? I'm comming from VA(aka going to miss winter a lot).
But, could you perhaps share some details to me about the classes and their difficulty? As in...do the proffesors know what they are doing? Is it a solid place to learn Japanese? I want to go into translating as a career...

I'm actually studying abroad right now, but I'll tell you that you'll be in heaven if you are looking for movies, shopping, and clubs. If you are looking for nice, clean dorms - - stay far far away. The campus itself however is very clean and beautiful. But, if you like seasonal change, I wouldn't recommend Hawaii's eternal summer.

Racism wasn't an issue for me. I really didn't have any major problems at all. That's not to say that it doesn't happen, because it totally does. It's just not as rampant as people may suggest.
My teachers were very friendly, available, and intelligent. The classes were great too.

Japanese is a great program at UHM...and one of the many language programs that is offered at the university. More than most public state schools! I'm a UHM Alumni and loved my time there!

Hey! As far as learning Japanese in the United States, UH is considered to be one of the best schools. It actually has the biggest and most diverse Japanese program so if you wanted to you could focus on linguistics/literature/etc.
I don't really get what you mean by decent japanese, but if you want a workable conversational Japanese it's best to study at least three years and spend some time in Japan.
The people here are really nice and very multicultural (but a bit asia-pacific centric - meaning people don't know as much about European stuff as they would on the mainland.) Don't be afraid of stories of racism - it's not as bad as you hear. Generally people are very friendly.

Hey man thanks for replying back, I just caught the message, thanks for the info...I'm not planning in majoring in Japanese, but to do the MBA on Japanese Business concentration, the program says they provide Japanese instruction but I thought that if I can at least start some training it might boost up my application. I'll might start some Rosseta Stone or something. I've never heard anything about racism there, but I know there is a bit of "free Hawaii" kinda movement.

Hi, did you get a chance to check out Academy of creative media? I am interested in studying film production and journalism. I was accepted into UH-Manoa. I also got accepted to ASU. I am still waiting to hear back from USC, UCLA, and FSU. All warm climates. haha!
I actually wanted to go to film school for a long time (I went to a charter high school for film). ACM is a really good program and has a lot of talented professionals as teachers. My friend is just graduating from ACM and he had a great experience there.
I would definitely recommend going to USC or UCLA instead though for film. They are known across the world for their film schools. The downside is they are both unbelievably expensive.
Yeah, USC's tuition is ridiculous. HPU just offered me a 50% off scholarship for being a phi theta kappa honor student. So I think I will go there for multimedia-digital media. USC is taking forever to make a decision. I really don't think I'll get a deal like this at any other university so i think i will take HPU's offer and maybe go to USC for graduate school.

I haven't had much experience with a faculty at a university other than UH so I really couldn't say. All my professors/advisors/etc were great.
