they are both good planes but they've never met in combat in roughy equal position... usually 29s were early models, poorly maintained, sometimes even with serious malfunctions, and flown by inexperienced pilots compared to Western standards (like, for example, during the NATO bombing campaign of Yugoslavia)

Look at relative speeds... You have fully decked out F-16, and fully decked out mig-29SM, their speeds are greatly impacted on by drag, along with maneuvrability. Now take a F-35 v Su-35 context. If the Su was carrying no weapons, it would easily take out F-35, but it is carrying up to 14 AAMs, and probably only 9, with 3 fuel tanks on combat air patrol, so it has huge drag, whereas F-35 now has speed and accel adv. over Sukhoi

@jasper5554 No it shouldn't. We've had the F-22 for a decade and you barely have a prototype. All of the bugs and glitches of the F-22 will be gone by the time you start seeing yours. We've had it longer, we'll be more experienced with it, and we'll be able to adapt the Raptor to the PAK where as you had to completely build a new plane to adapt to the F-22.

16th was created to count machines like mig-21 in dogfight, then 29th was created to beat all fighters except may be f-15 (cuz 29th didn't have long-range AIMs). The problem is while 29th still the same dogfight-oriented light tactical fighter as in '83 (all deep modifications exist in single copies), f-16th has become absolutely different strike fighter with modern avionics, advanced AWACS integration, new AN/APG-80, new AIMs.
Not sure what plane you're talking about, but the MiG-29 has a higher thrust to weight ratio, a higher angle of a attack and a higher top speed than the F-16.
I have been informed, the Flacon actually has a higher top speed and thrust to weight ratio ( as I'm sure you know ). I didn't know the MiG-29 weighs 10 thousand pounds more than the F-16... according to the chart I'm looking at anyways. I've got different specs from different sources. ;/

@pepito062796 actually, you are still wrong, the only MiG-29 variants that have 9 hardpoints are the K model and the MiG-35, neither of which are in active service with the russian military, the MiG-29M(the most advanced version that is actually used by the VVS)only has 8, however the overwhelming majority of MiG-29s in service with the VVS only have 7 hardpoints, whereas even the F-16A has 11 hardpoints.
@8BigBaHo8 No way. The Mig-29's air to ground capabilities are terrible. It's limited to unguided bombs & rockets. And the F-16's data links for AWACS aircraft are much better than the Mig-29. Plus, the range of the Mig-29 is unbelievably bad & really limits it's combat missions. Especially for a plane that is meant to be a fighter.

@nagno1 The point being is that as menveuverable as the SU-72 is, it's under powered and also has a huge profile and old avionics suite. This makes is an inferior combat aircraft, but a damn maneuverable bird.

Accidents happen in both US and Russia, but with Russia they happen more often, and are bigger and more deadly. To me that says a lot about their skill.

@dannaryan How exactly does the mig have "quite a lot of an upper hand"? Both jets can pull 9g turns quite well and quite fast. If anything, I'd say the F-16's got the edge due to its lower weight and smaller air frame. I've heard stories of it even being able to outmaneuver the F-15 in close range

All of this is irrelevant now. With helmet mounted sights and AIM-9X. All the pilot needs to do is look at the jet and pull the trigger. He no longer needs to put the nose on him.
Not true. The off-boresight capabilities of the AIM-9X just mean that they can get a lock off boresight--he still needs to have his nose pointed the right way for the missile to have any chance of actually hitting the target.

The mig-29 has some serieus issue's. One is combat radius (fuel) and second is outdated electronics. Setting up weapons employement is cumbersome.
There have been training exercises between f-16 and German Mig-29. Outcome is that F16 wins. Poland has ordered F-16's, so that says enough.
Mig-29 though is very maneuverable on par with the F-18 (not super hornet) according to some American pilots.

@Rikthful: We faced India's SU-30MKI with F-16's at the Red Flag. We won. Of course, but the main enemy wasn't Russia in Korea. Look at World War II. a German Soldier killed ~ average of 5 russian Soldiers. a US-Soldier killed ~ 3 Germans, and ~ 8 japanese Soldiers.

The other shot down a Panavia Tornado (RAF) which crashed 3 days later (yes, that particular Tornado which SUPPOSEDLY shot down by Mig-29 actually crashed in another mission - the pilot LT. Chas Stevenson was injured and retired from RAF permently).

Look at relative speeds... You have fully decked out F-16, and fully decked out mig-29SM, their speeds are greatly impacted on by drag, along with maneuvrability. Now take a F-35 v Su-35 context. If the Su was carrying no weapons, it would easily take out F-35, but it is carrying up to 14 AAMs, and probably only 9, with 3 fuel tanks on combat air patrol, so it has huge drag, whereas F-35 now has speed and accel adv. over Sukhoi

@dap889 i agree there. the mig requires an external tank to have any kind of combat effective range. im just saying if these aircraft were to ever meet with ideal circumstances for BOTH the mig would turn tighter. dont get me wrong, i love the f-16. the best way to deal with a mig-29 is an AIM-120 up the ass. a smart viper driver will never let the mig get close enough in the first place.

@jasper5554 No it shouldn't. We've had the F-22 for a decade and you barely have a prototype. All of the bugs and glitches of the F-22 will be gone by the time you start seeing yours. We've had it longer, we'll be more experienced with it, and we'll be able to adapt the Raptor to the PAK where as you had to completely build a new plane to adapt to the F-22.

@ToonandBBfan they could,but since the military has already spent billions of dollars on the new F-35(which will replace the F-16)i dont think they would spend any more money on something that will soon be replaced(but i still think that upgrading highly proven systems like the F-15,16,and 18 with stealth derivatives would be a much easier,faster,and MUCH cheaper alternative to a completely new aircraft,we literally could have saved hundreds of billions of dollars by not building the F-22 or 35)

to me it doesn't look as real duel. 29th has a bit greater trust-to-weight factor and 2 times lesser wing load, it allows 29th make 360 degree turn for ~1 second faster than 16th and as well it has little climbing advantage. i don't mean that 16th cannot win dogfight, but i don't believe total domination of 16th shown here. it'd be honestly to publish both HUD sure if 29th pilot knew he was fighting

16th was created to count machines like mig-21 in dogfight, then 29th was created to beat all fighters except may be f-15 (cuz 29th didn't have long-range AIMs). The problem is while 29th still the same dogfight-oriented light tactical fighter as in '83 (all deep modifications exist in single copies), f-16th has become absolutely different strike fighter with modern avionics, advanced AWACS integration, new AN/APG-80, new AIMs.

@pepito062796 actually, you are still wrong, the only MiG-29 variants that have 9 hardpoints are the K model and the MiG-35, neither of which are in active service with the russian military, the MiG-29M(the most advanced version that is actually used by the VVS)only has 8, however the overwhelming majority of MiG-29s in service with the VVS only have 7 hardpoints, whereas even the F-16A has 11 hardpoints.

Plus, the range of the Mig-29 is unbelievably bad & really limits it's combat missions. Especially for a plane that is meant to be a fighter.

@XSpaceStormX No, only 1 F117 was lost. One of 12 deployed to the theatre, and flying well over 100 missions. That doesn't include missions flown by Italy, France, Turkey and a number of other NATO nations to perform air strikes.
If Serbian air defenses were so good, then why only down two planes? Why not a Turkish F-16? Why not an French Mirage or British or German Tornado?
The truth is the Serbs successfully predicted the F117s flight path, and hit it with an SA3. Again, open doors.

It's a shame that the poor migs always get shit pilots becuase close range air/air the mig has the upper hand... Quite a lot of an upper hand.

@dannaryan How exactly does the mig have "quite a lot of an upper hand"? Both jets can pull 9g turns quite well and quite fast. If anything, I'd say the F-16's got the edge due to its lower weight and smaller air frame. I've heard stories of it even being able to outmaneuver the F-15 in close range

@agilefalcon16 Thats right, The F-16 has been known to out maneuvre an F-15 in close quarters.
However when you consider that the Mig-29 Has an evenHIGHER thrust to weight ratio than the F-15...
It can outrun....outclimb....And as long as long as they arent flying sub-200knots it will out turn the f16.
But in the end of the day it all comes down to the pilot.

@dannaryan the mig 29 can only out run the f16 at VERY high alt. at med alt they are close and at lower alt the f16 is genarly faster. also the mig 29 has a higher AoA but the f16 has a better sustained turn rate. the f16 also has better range.

All of this is irrelevant now. With helmet mounted sights and AIM-9X. All the pilot needs to do is look at the jet and pull the trigger. He no longer needs to put the nose on him.

You are right, the Sidewinder 9X is quite an upgrade, however, the Russian R-73R is even better.

Not true. The off-boresight capabilities of the AIM-9X just mean that they can get a lock off boresight--he still needs to have his nose pointed the right way for the missile to have any chance of actually hitting the target.
