Very nice early thirties popular "sweet" band recording. According to Brian Rust's American Dance Band discography, Ozzie's band for this session had two famous jazz musicians, Charlie Spivak on trumpet and Jack Teagarden on trombone
@laofuzi400 Fallout takes place in the future yes, but the music that gets played is from around when the first atomic bomb fell which was 1945, so the songs that are played tend to be best sellers from the 1940s not the 30s, even though its only like a 10 year difference, most music would have been lost, if it wasnt in use or being taken to vaults and such...
@WoWgirrl The first Fallout game set in 2161, the world was destroyed at 2077. They kept the style of late 40s and early 50s period to the war, but they were not actully in the 40s or early 50s when the war happend .so it is very reasonable to include this song in the game.
@laofuzi400 I am awear of that, im saying since the world was at war the styles and such of the 1940-50 where still around bc everyone was focused on developing new weapons not colour tv or different music.. and i am awear that this is a 1930's song, since the world was nuked alot of the music would have been destroyed... thats why there are only a couple songs in each game bc its hard to find working records of music.
@plodd34 There is a CD called "Legendary Bands of the '30s" that was issued in the late 1980s or early 90s that has this same recording. You can sometimes find used copies of the CD on Ebay.
Lots of people sounded a little like crooner Rudy Vallee in 1931, though that was near the end of the 'crooner' era. In another 10 years, Ozzie's band could swing with the best of them. Of course, he had Harriet to inspire him by that time. Check out his version of 'Jersey Jive' from 1941.
I like this. Nice gentle song. Ozzie had a passable singing voice, although I'd rate Harriet higher as a singer. Good effect showing the 78 playing, too.
And there was also a later version that was a hit for Frankie Laine, maybe in the '40s? Anyway, John Phillips said he got the idea for Cass to do the song from memories of the Frankie Laine recording of this song.
Ozzie formed his "sweet" band in the late '20s, and began recording for Brunswick in 1930 [he continued to record until the AFM recording ban took effect at the end of July 1942]. This was recorded on February 16, 1931.
I was a radio DJ in the 1960s. I played this on the air one night after Mama Cass (of Mamas & Papas fame) had a big #1 Hit with this song. My young listeners were amazed it was an old song recorded years ago.
By the way, do you also have that famous version with Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald? It will be great to listen that version in the original 78rpm format.
lol hearing this type of music reminds me of fallout 3

I'm sure someone has mentioned, Ozzie Nelson was father to teen idol Ricky Nelson and grandfather to The Nelsons.
