While I don't really understand why you guys didn't get to play with the Jackpot wedge (introduced over two months earlier), I can hazard a guess -- none of the episodes go further than three rounds.
@tpir1972 Rarely watched either, because I was either in class at high school/college, or doing temp jobs. Goen did a decent job, although the show itself was pretty "cheap" as I recall. Rolf Benirschke was a former kicker for the San Diego Chargers. This was a rather.....odd choice by Merv. He tried his best, but he just never looked comfortable hosting the show.
@tpir1972 Just once in awhile, comes on right after local 6p news here. Somehow Vanna touching letters instead of turning them just doesn't seem right
Oh My god! A $14000 fun filled camping showcase! Wowwee!!! And a Sensational Ski trip in Colorado?!?! HOLY CRAP!!! It doesnt get any better then this!!! And Pat Sajack still looks old even in 86 and so doesnt Vana...Wow...A US Savings bond too....Wow... Do they still even have those? this is Hysterical!
@GameShowGamer the "fake audience" with the wheel spinning and the prize cues were used in just about all of the NBC game shows in the late 70s and all of the 80s... Also, I love WOF but the only reason i didnt watch this NBC version is because it was shown here in VA during the 2nd half of TPIR @ 11:30am
Ok, i have One question that some of you might know. WHY did the audience yell and shout out continuously on Wheel of Fortune back in the 80's when someone would spin the wheel?? LOL I thought that was hilarious, it was as if they were talking to the Wheel itself what to stop on, ha ha, very funny indeed! LOL I don't think the audience on Wheel of Fortune does that now days, yells out at the Wheel when it's spinning...do they? I don't think they do, they might've cut it out for some reason.
s and maybe even worse because my grandmother says that's the reason she quit watching. and this was back in 2003. Or maybe her hearing just got worse and she just couldn't handle it anymore.
Well, she was 2 years older than me. At the time, I just wasn't at ease talking to older girls--dumb thing I know. Tracey on the 12/23 show and Paula on the 12/25 show were dang cute though! Never got to know 'em that well.
The air date happens to be the very day I was born, and I coincidentally came across the video while watching other "Wheel" bloopers. Thanks for posting this! It's interesting to think this could have been the first show I ever watched.
I hope some network has the sense to bring back daytime "Wheel". Since the daytime show's values were 1/5 of the nighttime, the top prize could be $200,000 if brought back soon (season 26: $1 mil top prize). That for sure could compete with TPIR!!! If only ABC or NBC would bring it back for competition w/ TPIR.
BTW tom, did you notice that an awesome guy who just joined youtube posted the 1987 Teen week finale? I still can't believe you couldn't get a copy of the finale from your week...
Yes, I've been in touch with him. I could've delayed my appearance to that time, but just couldn't wait. I had all those puzzles in '87. Plus, there were some dang cute girls in '87! :)
Yeah, offstage near the audience. I was a little stunned and bummed it was over. I wouldn't have solved it; I didn't know where Tahiti was, but I knew my folks wanted to go to Hawaii so that's what I would've played for
It's the daytime version. The night time version had pretty much the same pattern except for the beefing up of some of the values. (EG the $100 by the Free Spin space was $700 on the night time show.)
Hey Tom, that wasn't bad for an audience. Peter Marshall claims he took a peek at WOF when Chuck was hosting in '80, and there were only 7 in the studio then. Much better! lol
Pat: "Let's spin the wheel top dollar value is $750 try not to hit bankrupt.....if you do you lose your cash but not your merchandise because one you buy a prize, it's yours to keep."
My gosh, I can't believe how much the set has changed in 22 years! It looks so chintzy in this video compared to the digital displays they have now! Tom you're one of the lucky few who were able to get on the show!
"o.k..for $2350 i'll take the zebra skin mailbox. oh..And for $750 i'll have the Mona Lisa lamp.......and the rest on a gift certificate....(gift certificate to ??????)
Well, if it was my turn at the camping showcase, I would've said: "Pat, I'd like it all in cash. None of this stuff looks good to me because I don't like camping. I'll take it all in cash." And if I had to buy something, then I'd only take what I'd want and then put the rest on a gift certificate. (Or, if I didn't have much left over, on account.)
Well, with the wheel today, usually if you land on one space and spin again, if you have a good amount of strength you will most likely land very close or on that space every single spin afterward. With this wheel it's much harder though as the wheel seems to take forever to stop! :P
Wow, this wheel certainly does not come to a stop as fast as today! If you really gave the wheel a good spin you could probably get this to go revolve 2 whole times!
Right around the time when Pat Sajak celebrated his anniversary on the show. And to think, 5 years earlier, nobody thought he'd fill Woolery's shoes well enough to last.
Oh--for my game, you can faintly hear the audience, they were more animated than the other shows that taped that day. But most of the noise was truly "canned". As the day wore on, the audience was getting tired, not clapping as much. Taping started 3pm PT, we did 2 shows, then got a catered meal, then taped the last 3. We didn't really end til about 9.
This is cool. Thank you for sharing this with us. You did well!
I know most of the audience sounds were canned, but while the wheel was spinning, was that sound canned, too? Another Q, how long did it take to start the next round, due to the puzzle board having to be reloaded?
No, the clicking of the wheel as I recall was "real".
Between rounds, some stagehands shoved the whole puzzle board behind some curtain, while others went behind the board to switch out the letters for the next round. At Price is Right, they run breaks pretty much in "real time," as if it were on air live.
I do have video of that, although I missed the first minute while I was digging around for a blank VHS tape. He won $25K, then lost the next day. Do you know him? I'd love to hear from him, and any other players from my week.
What happened was, tape 1 had the full intro, but started to have track issues from about 1:45 to 2:00. Tape 2 had some of the intro missing, but no tracking issues. So I edited between the two to make it look right. I didn't anticipate the jump in volume.
BTW, that NBC living color thing wasn't part of the real show, I threw that in just to give it a "nostalgic" feel.
