Not according to the results of the 'Pacific vision' war game exercise held back in August of 2008. Even the newer F-35 performed poorly against the SU aircraft.

Clearly this is relatively old; U2s are not longer in service, and there are no F-22s. The F-15 Eagle can no longer truly be called the best fighter plane ever, what with generation 5 aircraft taking to the skies.

I am 17. I feel lucky to have seen the CF-188 (F/A-18) the Tornado and The Harrier all in flight. The Harrier took off less than 200 ft from me. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard.

@nastypop Prior flying experience matters not. All you need is a college degree to get a commission, and if you can't afford college, enlist. There's plenty of easy 3-4 yr contracts out there that would give you lots of time to take college classes on the side with tuition assistance, then you can use the GI bill once you're out and finish up whatever's left. Then get a commission, don't suck, and you'll be flying something. Being dumb might stack the deck against you though, if it's true...

In the most demanding air strike simulation in the world called RED FLAG, Greek pilots outperformed US pilots with the incredible 11-0. It was the most severe defeat the USAF has ever suffered in in entire history giving pride to the Greek Nation for its pilots. RED FLAG is considered the most realistic and most demanding exercise in the world. USAF had until last November an excellent strike rate beating every opponent they meet. But last October of 2008 Greece prevailed!

India's SUs were at Red Flag 2008. They may or may not bring their upgraded MiG 29s to a future engagement or they might be at a COPE India engagement. Have to wait and see. Part of the reason why you dont see them at enagements like this is because the nations that fly these planes tend to barely have the money to keep the planes airworthy. Flying off to spend money on a big training exercise may cost them too much. MiG and SU are cheaper compared to F15/16.
Well, I was speaking more of Russian planes with Russian pilots, than those who can't afford flying their planes in large exercises several times a year. Anyway, I didn't get your point on MiG and SU's being cheaper. 1. Sadly, they're not (modernized ones), 2. they are not being bought because of being cheaper than F15/16 ;)

Im not sure if the Russians hold an exercise this large. Im sure they do something. Remember that the MiGs and SUs were sent to former USSR members for free or at a discounted price. When the USSR disolved, these planes were property of the nation that was formed. Many of these countries are poor(economically compared to russia/US) and cant afford to field the planes like they should be fielded.
As for them being cheaper, the MiG35 and Su-35 sare not being produced in huge numbers as there is no buyer for them, expensive and lack of support. So you chould be comparing the base MiG29 and the base Su27 and they are considerable cheaper than F15/16. not only that, we wont sell to sertain countries. Russia will sell to anyone. If you arent on the friend list, you arent invited to play with the US. as for India at Redflag. They did fine. Remember its not about winning.

Anyway, I hear from my friends from VVS that MiG29 and Su27 are being modernized in relatively large numbers, and no problems with support or funding is observed (unlike with qualified labour on factories - it takes more time). As for winning.. well, yes, the main point here is not winning - if you compete with allies. But Russians Vs. Americans in such an event would be as a world cup final - is, and only about winning :)
If you need something to see what would happen look up COPE India 2004. The 2 planes never went head to head balls to the wall. F15 was handicapped to WVR only and SU was allowed BVR. No AWACS support for the F15 and tons of it for the Su. The odds were stacked like 10-1 in favor of the Su. The F15 was basically flying blind to the heavily supported Su. This is why I say its not about winning. Its about learning.
No AF is willing to see their aircraft come in second place no matter how favorable the outcome may seem. Its not worth the mental moral crusher it would be. The fact is that the F15 has already gone head to head in battle with the MiG 29. Guess who won? The F15 has proved time and time again that is the best fighter in the world and has the record to back it up. Numbers are great, but you better have the skill to back those numbers. You have no idea what any Military exercise is supposed to accomplish. The point of Red Flag is to test effectivness of new tactics and training. As well as get the new guys so combat simulation. Its not to "win" or "beat" the other guy. I could lose every engagement at Red Flag or COPE India and still come out the winner in the end. The Rafale is a great plan except for 1 thing. Its French. French have TERRIBLE support for their planes.

I know that it's only a big exercise, but you must admit that it is also a good way to test the effectiveness of your aircrafts and to see if they are competitive compared to the fighters of the other nations !
No its not a good way to test the effectiveness of your aircraft vs comparative aircraft. Explain to me how giving handicaps, such as certain limited flight envelopes/parameters or reduced weapons capacity and bonuses to other aircraft such as the ability to get shot, disengage and respawn instead of being called out is a good way to measure anything other than the tactic being tested at that particular exercise at that exact moment? It doesnt. It shows the strength and weakness in that exercise

1) The Raptor has very low visibility on X and K radar bands; that means first look, first shot, first kill
2) The Raptor is faster and can out-accelerate and out-climb the Su-37
3) With its integrated avionics and sensor fusion the Raptor pilot will be able to outhink and outmaneuver even multiple Su-37s.
4) The AIM-120C and D missiles are superior in range,, lethality and resistance to electronic counter measures than anything Russia has.

In the most demanding air strike simulation in the world called RED FLAG, Greek pilots outperformed US pilots with the incredible 11-0. It was the most severe defeat the USAF has ever suffered in in entire history giving pride to the Greek Nation for its pilots. RED FLAG is considered the most realistic and most demanding exercise in the world. USAF had until last November an excellent strike rate beating every opponent they meet. India's SUs were at Red Flag 2008. They may or may not bring their upgraded MiG 29s to a future engagement or they might be at a COPE India engagement. Have to wait and see. Part of the reason why you dont see them at enagements like this is because the nations that fly these planes tend to barely have the money to keep the planes airworthy. Flying off to spend money on a big training exercise may cost them too much. MiG and SU are cheaper compared to F15/16.

Well, I was speaking more of Russian planes with Russian pilots, than those who can't afford flying their planes in large exercises several times a year. Anyway, I didn't get your point on MiG and SU's being cheaper. 1. Sadly, they're not (modernized ones), 2. they are not being bought because of being cheaper than F15/16 ;)
Anyway, is there any film like this one about Red Flag 2008? Did Indians do well, or Asians still can't fly properly?

Im not sure if the Russians hold an exercise this large. Im sure they do something. Remember that the MiGs and SUs were sent to former USSR members for free or at a discounted price. When the USSR disolved, these planes were property of the nation that was formed. Many of these countries are poor(economically compared to russia/US) and cant afford to field the planes like they should be fielded.

As for them being cheaper, the MiG35 and Su-35 sare not being produced in huge numbers as there is no buyer for them, expensive and lack of support. So you chould be comparing the base MiG29 and the base Su27 and they are considerable cheaper than F15/16. not only that, we wont sell to sertain countries. Russia will sell to anyone. If you arent on the friend list, you arent invited to play with the US. as for India at Redflag. They did fine. Remember its not about winning.

Ok, now I see what you meant, thanks. Anyway, I hear from my friends from VVS that MiG29 and Su27 are being modernized in relatively large numbers, and no problems with support or funding is observed (unlike with qualified labour on factories - it takes more time). At least there are more of them, than any fighters in any other country in the world, except one (quite obvious which one).

If you need something to see what would happen look up COPE India 2004. The 2 planes never went head to head balls to the wall. F15 was handicapped to WVR only and SU was allowed BVR. No AWACS support for the F15 and tons of it for the Su. The odds were stacked like 10-1 in favor of the Su. The F15 was basically flying blind to the heavily supported Su. This is why I say its not about winning. Its about learning.

No AF is willing to see their aircraft come in second place no matter how favorable the outcome may seem. Its not worth the mental moral crusher it would be. The fact is that the F15 has already gone head to head in battle with the MiG 29. Guess who won? The F15 has proved time and time again that is the best fighter in the world and has the record to back it up. Numbers are great, but you better have the skill to back those numbers. USAF and USN get almost 4 times the eat time vs Rus AF pilots

The engine was only at idle. It doesn't become dangerous until they run it up. Notice none of the ground crew are wearing hats, those would get sucked in and can destroy the engine.

What are you comparing the F22 to? The Eurofighter? Its like you missed a whole sentence. I dont think the delays and poor cost assumptions along with the fact that different parts of the plane are assmbled in different places is what I would call cost effective. You have no idea what any Military exercise is supposed to accomplish. The point of Red Flag is to test effectivness of new tactics and training. As well as get the new guys so combat simulation. Its not to "win" or "beat" the other guy. I could lose every engagement at Red Flag or COPE India and still come out the winner in the end. The Rafale is a great plan except for 1 thing. Its French. French have TERRIBLE support for their planes.

I know that it's only a big exercise, but you must admit that it is also a good way to test the effectiveness of your aircrafts and to see if they are competitive compared to the fighters of the other nations !

No its not a good way to test the effectiveness of your aircraft vs comparative aircraft. Explain to me how giving handicaps, such as certain limited flight envelopes/parameters or reduced weapons capacity and bonuses to other aircraft such as the ability to get shot, disengage and respawn instead of being called out is a good way to measure anything other than the tactic being tested at that particular exercise at that exact moment? It doesnt. It shows the strength and weakness in that exercise
