Derek is amazing man. That video where he spoke to Arnold and then Proposed to his girlfriend was amazing.. I truly felt like clapping and cheering at my seat lol
@TRDUMBO there are 2.5's on there too. but they are a weird gray color that makes them difficult to see. and i agree with you 100%, doesn't even look like 450. just count the plates, its clearly AT LEAST 495
Derek can handle the weight, all the "old guy" has to is take 50 pounds at the very most of pressure from the lift in order to allow derek to return the bar to its resting postion if he was to struggle. Spotters dont need to be the incredible hulk in order to spot someone that is doing a heavy weight. As long as the lifter is comfortable at the weight then its fine.
good god!!!im 6ft tall and weigh 12 stone.im not into training although id like to be if i had the time....i squeezed out 2 reps at 100 kg...this guy makes me look about as weak as a 3 year old!!!! think if i trained every day for ten years id never be able to bench half that!amazing!!!
I'm sick of seeing comments like these... You are obviously amateur weightlifters who aren't well educated in terms of weight training.
A spotter is not meant to lift the entire weight from you and pull it to the rack. A spotter is there to ASSIST you in lifting it, when you come to the point when you aren't able to lift the full weight.
All that man has to do is assist this guy in getting it off of him, and when he went for the 3rd rep, the spotter did just that. Watch it.
Why is it that every strongman video I go and watch on youtube, some Ronnie Coleman nut-hugger is always on here commenting how "ronnie is stronger", "ronnie can do that", "ronnie is better looking".
Just to highlight the difference, compare Ronnie's famous deadlifting video to Poundstone's 800 for 9, of which only the last one was hitched. Even with the "drained for Olympia" difference accounted for, I doubt Coleman could have hit more than half the clean reps Poundstone got.
I got that, or at least you weren't implying bodybuilders are generally as strong or stronger than straight-up strength athletes, but I felt that it might be good to offer some possible reasons for it, or at least contributing factors.
Sorry, not to harp on this but I just check Ronnie's video and most of those were partial reps, I'd say. Not a knock on him, of course, as that is perfectly valid BB training and still beastly work, but comparing 8 partials to 2.5 regular while coming back from an injury starts to get hazy.
As draining as the dieting process can be, I'd hesitate to claim it cut his reps to a third. It might have been possible for him to eke out a third rep on that day - I couldn't tell if it was planned as a double or if he maxed out at 2. I put my initial estimate at 4, and perhaps 5 reps as you say, but more than that seems to be a rather large jump. I'm no expert on strength loss during dieting - but tripling the observed reps is a ton. I'd be open to evidence of that, though
You have to recall that strongmen often suck at the bench relative to their other lifts. This is because the bench is not a directly tested lift in strongman - hasn't been for a long time. They are, however, the world's premier overhead pressers along with O-lifters.
For powerlifter/strongman cross-competitors, it can be a different story of course. Brian Siders, for example, is the IPF's record holder in the bench
There's also the volume vs intensity tradeoff in the diff sports
That's Very dangerous only a trained person should try benching that much, because you can drop it on your neck, and brake vessel. Or when you lift you can easily pop a muscle that would be very painful,
I respect this clip , very well done . He actually showed how heavy each plate is not like the other clips that they say 500lb bench press 10 reps and they're using fake plates that just look like 45lbs.
I wish I could Press a button and a Meteorite fell on the head of a person every time the word "Steroids" and "Fatass" were brought up when talking about a powerlifter or bodybuilder. Don't disrespect this sport because your Mom And Dad have shitty genetics and passed them on to you
also i think alot of people are missing something what derek is doing here are real clean reps as in all the way down then all the way up until ur elbows lock out look at pretty much anyone that benches alot and they always have these reps where the bar does not even touch there chest and they use other muscles to jerk it back up and many times to even lock out there elbows
@1JayCutlerFan1 Well.. keep in mind that Derek is not a powerlifter and doesn't focus on his bench as much as Stan.. but Stan would never beat Derek in a strongman competition.
@MetalCamelChannel i agree with yah man. stan could never beat derek in strongman. derek can do some lifts that efferding couldnt like clean n press 400 for reps, 1 hand db press 200 for reps
@DjPyro2010 i dont have the funds to get it going. plus the catch is having an over sized man doing the slamming. a guy of my size doing that to woman would just look like a real fight. this is for entertainment.
@TheCloverfieldchris yes there are a decent amount of people who can bench 500lbs 3 times, but its not about the bench. im sure he RARELY even tries to bench press sinse its not mandatory in his sport. now an excercise that is in his sport is the single arm dumbell cirus press where he does a 200lb dumbell in one arm for over 10 reps. take a guy that isnt a wsm athlete who can match dereck`s bench and tell him to try that...i doubt he could do it for one rep
this man claims to be Americas Strongest Man but i just dont know....that bench press set was pretty average for an elite athlete. i think brian shaw a better us rep
Worlds strongest man has very little to do with chest training at all. Its all squats deads, overheads and grip. Even Kevin Nee said he only trains chest a few times a year.
@dargomaniac actually having a strong bench press carries over to having a strong log press.alot of people tend to think the bench press exercise is only a vanity lift but i dissagre....its the best exercise to building strong chest, triceps and deltoids. anybody that doesnt like bench is either very tall, not a good bencher
@TheCloverfieldchris Fair call, but i guess poundstones results speak for themselves. I just know some amateur strongmen that dusted me in the strongman comp I did(it was just a novice one, with quite light weights comparitvely) But i could bench more than them. Guess, I was envious ;) haha. Cheers mate
@TheCloverfieldchris i disagree man no offense but these guys obviously know more then u about the sport and if they say chest is not as important then there probably right tho i did hear that derek started working at his bench to try and get it up to 600 but he still has to worry more about stuff like legs and back
Nice to see a big dude benching a lot of weight and not bouncing it off his sternum. Sure a lot of hard work preceeded this feat. Great display of strength.
@kaktustaggig The problem with your comment starts around "Compared to powerlifters and strongmen" You really can't compare them. They train for different purposes. In my opinion, saying something like "my bench max is 750" is a lot better then saying "I can do 400 for 10 reps" but thats just me. And I would prefer the physique of poundstone over say.. Jay Cutler anyday. Also just my opinion..
@DKDIESEL93 i agree, dont get me wrong i think jay cutler has a great physique but derek looks powerful as hell and can still move pretty fast when he has to, whereas someone with cutlers physique will have trouble wiping there ass because alot of it isnt functional muscle
I could only dream about benching this much weight and big props to Derek for 2 solid reps. But check out Allen Baria's video. He makes 500 look easy.
@92tillinfinity benching 500 or 1500 dont mean shit buddy its all bout pound for pound n being agile. wake up call u not gonna whoop ass just someone is buff or and cuz u bench alot of weight. not saying u wanna whoop ass but a pound for pound guy is basically stronger than the guy who benches 1500pds :)
@dontbesoft First of all, I was joking with my comment. Second of all, what the fuck did you just say? You clearly have no understanding of weightlifting, or the English language for that matter.
@92tillinfinity I wasnt even talking to u chump! U obviously got no knowledge of "lifting" period. And this is not an english composition class for me to check my grammar. :)
@92tillinfinity do you have any fucking idea how heavy 500 lbs is? STFU I bench 100000 houses with my sledgehammer and not to mention on occasion with my dick!
@JpRules123 Don't get me wrong, I know these guys basically have to give up what other people call a normal life and spend almost every waking hour lifting weights. And to them, this is a "normal" life.
i tried doing narrower gripped incline presses, that built up strength in my upper pecs and shoulders and got me past my upper limits, just food for thought
@Dillet1421 Fucking retard shut the fuck up with your stupid comments about steroids. Let me correct you : ''It's amazing what years of training can do''. Steroids are not some fucking magical formula to grow muscle like fuck in a couple months. But you would know that if you were not living in your mother's basement playing World of Warcraft all day, This guy has probly been working out for more than your fucking age kid.

@dontbesoft First of all, I was joking with my comment. Second of all, what the fuck did you just say? You clearly have no understanding of weightlifting, or the English language for that matter.
92tillinfinity 1 year ago
@92tillinfinity I wasnt even talking to u chump! U obviously got no knowledge of "lifting" period. And this is not an english composition class for me to check my grammar. :)

@92tillinfinity LOL! Yea but lifting 500 all at once takes some serious Muscle.

@dondee500k True dat, but you stil have to work your ass off for alot of time to achieve such a shape. It's what people don't realise.
JpRules123 1 year ago
@JpRules123 Don't get me wrong, I know these guys basically have to give up what other people call a normal life and spend almost every waking hour lifting weights. And to them, this is a "normal" life.

Dillet1421 1 year ago
@Dillet1421 Fucking retard shut the fuck up with your stupid comments about steroids. Let me correct you : ''It's amazing what years of training can do''. Steroids are not some fucking magical formula to grow muscle like fuck in a couple months. But you would know that if you were not living in your mother's basement playing World of Warcraft all day, This guy has probly been working out for more than your fucking age kid.
