  • Wonderful introduction! Thank you! Now that I have some guidance I can, hopefully, make sounds that don't resemble a frightened elephant. :-)

  • When I try to make the noises, they come from my throat rather than the didgeridoo. As if you were trying to make noises with your mouth closed... Any tips?

  • very hard

  • superb, precise vid ... thank you... will be getting mine in a few days

  • Thumbs up if you learned circular breathing from this video.

  • just one question: How do make the lips flutter at 4:30, where your right cheek is closed and your left closes after the breath? Might be the tongue pushing?

  • Very well put ive been practicing circular breathing n still dont have it to a t harder than it looks

  • Excellent instruction. The way you demystify circular breathing is impressive! I never realized it was that simple!

  • This Intrument Sucks

  • @msg00pak I think you need a lesson on proper capitalization.

  • thats a real tamastik instrument...:))))

  • Hey man, i just bought my Didgeridoo like 1 hour ago and i am already creating the sounds and circle breathing. Thanks for the great vid!!

  • just got my very first Meinl synthetic (cause it won't have cracks etc),..i think I am spitting all over inside the didge....will have to clean it up before it become colonies of bacteria.. btw..got the basic drone going..kinda rough tho.. thank for the vid

  • You're cheating. You've got that huge wound in your neck to breathe through.

  • I bought a nice didgeridoo and im looking forward to learn how to play, yet with all the breathing in and out i go dizzy lol. how long ones need to practice in order to get used to all the breathing into the brain?

Also, very nice lesson, thanks for sharing

  • @Forkenzo I would say slow down a bit and get into a cycle that dosn't make you dizzy. As time goes by hopefully your body will get used to the faster breathing.

  • im an idiot i can't do the breathing

  • When I try to circular breathe I end up doing it from my lungs and even when trying to do it feel my tummy goin inwards until I need to breathe from my mouth, any advice?

  • how long did it take you to learn how to circular breathe?

  • I just made a didg out of PVC pipe from my local hardware store that is 2 inches

in diameter and 3 feet long.I then bought some beeswax from the grocery store

and heated up a bowl of water in the microwave.I then worked the piece with my

hands until softened and molded it around the end of the PVC pipe.I just tried

to make sure that there was no air escaping around my mouth.I am sharing this

because you do not have to have a wood didg to make a great sound.Thank you 4 these vids!

  • i got an inexpensive didg on musiciansfriend . com

  • You are very good, to play the didgeridoo. I'm from Denmark, and I really want a didgeridoo

  • I have been trying, but while i breath in, it goes through my mouth, and not through my nose, how it should =/ Do you have any tips to prevent my mouth from breathing in and using my nose instead?

  • Circular breathing is hard!

  • thanks I want to try it now

  • how do you produce the "buzzing" sound?

  • What is that instrument to your left?

  • @Pyrovine Its called a Harmonium.

  • @Pyrovine Indian instrument

  • Ital sound bro!

    remember cieszyn tea fest?

    cheers:D!

  • @magodidj Hey P, thanks for saying hi and hope all is well. I had a look at the vid for your channel and some cool didges there. Hopefully we will get together someday and play together. Let me know what's happening in the future and maybe I will be able to show up. Cheers

  • @magodidj Hey P, thanks for saying hello :) Sure I remember our good chat. Your Youtube channel vid has some cool didges! I hope we can meet again and maybe get to jam together. Cheers, :)

  • thanks for the tips, I think they'll help a lot. I just bought one on a trip to Australia last week too.

  • kinda confused, im learning but the bit with both cheeks blown making a fart sound is breathing in/sucking in? it looks impossible, ive only JUST managed to make the sound with my didge....

  • @banndersnatch Well, am not exactly sure what your asking but it seems you are getting the drone sound so thats good. The little bit of air in the cheeks is outgoing and keeps the drone "alive" for a second while you thake a breath through your nose. Thats the circular breathing part. With practice soon you will be playing some cool sounds. Hope this helps :)

  • @banndersnatch some didgeridoos are easier to play than others, you should find one that drones well for you. if it is really hard to get the right drone from your didge maybe think about investing in another one, or look at the opening,if it is too big then getting the drone will be hard.. the one on mine drones beautifully and the opening is 1 3/16 inches in diameter (3 cm). I can't circular breath yet tho, and I think making the opening smaller will help. try a beeswax mouthpiece to attach =)

  • i cant do the breathing because of a deviated septum i thin..help!

  • great tips, i have just got a bit of pvc to practise on then when i feel confident i will get a traditional timber one, they also look great in the home, i see respect in your words and i have no problems playing pvc pipe, anybody threatened by that is most likly raciest and i think disrespecting there own existance on OUR earth

thank you for your help now i got to get that breathing right....

  • @ninsnum Thanks :) I agree a nice wood didg is beautiful to look and I have to admit I normaly play a wood didge. For learning though, a good quality wood didg can be quite expensive if it turns out to not be something one wishes to continue. If you do continue, over time you might collect more than one for different keys. When your ready to buy a wood one, my advice is to try as many as possible because out of quite a few there will be only one or two that really make you happy. All the best :)

  • thanks for the videos man, very useful!

  • Yes i know about them playing and yes i would probably be a lil offended if they were to be made out of plastic then the old ones would have been to

  • @timmy9007 Then possibly you will be sad to learn the "aboriginals" have used discarded metal tailpipes from the exhausts of vehicles and other bits and pieces they have found. The point being just because a "didg" is one of the instuments they play dosn't mean disrespect if someone else (like me) does it differently. Anyway, I have no guilty conscious about using plastic as the material or that I am being disrespectful to anyone for using one. Maybe one day I will make a vid with my wood didg.

  • White man should not play the didge..... it's not very respectful...

  • @BlackPeopleUnitedINC Black people should not think they are black, it's not very spiritual....

  • @BlackPeopleUnitedINC that's like saying black men shouldn't be able to hold public office...that is disrespectful.

  • Thnx, I really appreciate these tutorials. Just bought a secondhand didgeridoo which I couldn't even play before watching this tutorial

  • I can circular breath without the didge. like, I can keep the air flow going. But I cannot for the life of me find out how to keep the drone/buzzing lips going while I'm pushing the air out of my cheeks. Got any tips or anything? Or does anybody else have some tips?

  • @SkateTheMiddle Hi, one way you could try is shorter breaths and faster when using the didg. The problem your having could be with the change in pressure when using the didg, so increasing the pressure might help, and also try adjusting how hard you are pressing your lips on the didg. The fast breathing isn't nessasary, but just experiment until you got it going, then try slowing down/speeding up etc... :)

  • You give very detailed instructions and I appreciate your yourtube. Thanks so much. Joel

  • thanx for the tutorial! nice... and I like the plain tube (honestly... I'm going to make one).

  • you could at least show respect by playing a proper didge and not a bit of pipe.!!!

  • Respect to whom or to what? Before you answer, do some research.

  • @Digplayer show some respect to the aboriginies they invinted this

  • @timmy9007 Where in my video do I "disrespect" any person? Are you offended because I used the word "didgeridoo" and you think this word is native to aboriginal language? Do you even know about ancient South Americans playing simular instruments? If I was aboriginal and did a video with a plastic didgeridoo would you be offended? It's your right to show ignorance and although I try to be equal to all, it is my right to point out ignorance. Please think before you criticize about future subjects.

  • Not everyone has $200+ to learn to play something new. Like me. I'd rather spend $20 on a "bit of pipe" then see if I like playing it, than spend $250 on it then find it sucks.

  • never mastered the art of circular breathing! But after watching this video the secret has been revealed... thanks a million!!

  • thank you sir

  • 4:00 thats what she said! i got some cool idea for his man thanks for the video!

  • I can now vibrate my lips and use my vocal cords into the didge but it totally doesn't sound like an animal or anything cool.. aha just sounds like my normal "woo" haha when you do it with sounds way cooler.

  • Hey! Your videos are very helpful! But when I try to make noises with my vocal cords my lips stop vibrating. Any tips?

  • Adding voice is also a bit like humming a tune. Try first without the didge, vibrate your lips. Then while doing that, introduce a humming, maybe a tune or a drone sound. Once you get that happening, it is just practice to expand the vocals based on the same concept.

  • Thank man, that may help me to start learning them as it will be usual for 3 things with me.

  • Thanks man! I jus found a Didgeridoo today an im excited to start learning. This video is extremely helpful.

  • Thank you so much! I've watched so many videos, but yours was the only one that got me circular breathing for the first time and getting a better sound out of my didge!

  • Thanx so much! My Ma just bought one and we want to freak out the neighbours!

  • In this video you look very fatigue :D did you smoke something? lol :)

your videos are very very good :)

  • thanku!

  • breathing in with your cheeks expand, it's impossible to do...:S

  • Try first breathing just without blowing out. Then try just letting some air out. It's easy actually when you get then hang of it. Good luck :)

  • try breathing with out blowing out.. that would be normal breathing yes? lol im only messing erm

i can do the breathing wiht out the didg but putting it with the didg :/ just cant do.. also do u know where i can get bees wax from.. bare in mind im from england

  • Hi Craizij

Ya, that explanation sounded a but strange, lol.

I found some beeswax at a hardware store, but i havnt been there a long time and forget the name of the store. It was in Maidstone center, Kent. I think it's a fairly well known store. not BnQ though, more or a high street place. The other option i tried was a bees wax candle from a "spiritual/ healing/ crystal selling" type shop. Good luck :)

  • ok then thank you for the help :) il let you know how i get on and maybe post my own videos when i get good enough but thanks :)

  • I'm in the process of making a didgeri myself, and was able to pick up a pure beeswax votive candle at a Whole Foods Market (health food store) for less than three dollars.

  • Nope. I learned in four days. Practice. Take it slow.

  • Right before you breathe in, you allow just enough air into your cheeks before running out of air, then once your cheeks are filled, you close off your throat and breathe in through your nose while pushing the remaining air in your cheeks through the didge.

  • the only issue with that would be if you play to the corner of the mouth which is far easier to learn and play then it is to play front on. Also putting out the sound and doing the breathing at the same time is what catches most ppl up.

  • mate just gave me my first didge, sounds great , { when he does it but i love the sound so im gonna get it ,,, i hope ta for the heads up bro,, keep it on the floor , lol

  • Thanks, man - good clear lesson with a friendly manner! I'm going to have my students make and play their own...

  • Thanks man :)

  • your head doesnt look attached to your head. :/ but kewl video i just discovered this "didgeridoo" a few min ago

  • thats cool but shuldent you get a real wood diggeradoo

did you learn on a plastic one or on a wood one

  • Wicked cool! Is there anyway to make specific notes or find tabulature for thing?

  • does the didgeridoo still play without beeswax?

  • If I understand the question correctly, you mean does any didg need bee's wax or can none be used. If this is what you mean, then the answer is yes in most cases, and actually I prefer no bees wax if possible. If you mean the one in this video, I can play it without bees wax, but it's uncomfortable after a short time.

  • Good Work! Hey mate when are you going to put the other lessons online??

  • heh uczucz ale ja to umiemwięc mi to nie potrzebne ale dobrze ze chociasz

  • Hello all. Someone asked me about circular breathing and I thought the instructions I wrote back might help more people, so here the are, maybe it will help some people :) PS: I'll have to post it as more than one post...

  • Hi

    ok, here are the steps..

    1) Puff up your cheeks and hold the air.

    2) With the air still in your cheeks, start to breath normally through your nose.

    3) When you are breathing normally and while your cheeks are still full of air, try to slowly let some air out of your mouth and keep breathing. it doesn't matter if you empty your cheeks. Don't try to breath in with your mouth, just let the air out and keep breathing with your nose.

  • 4)After you can do that, then try letting only half of the air out of your cheeks while still breathing through the nose, but this time use your throat muscles to refill the air into your cheeks.

That's it. One thing to remember is it is two separate actions.

    1) The breathing is with the nose. 2)The filling up the air into the cheeks is with the throat and lungs.

    Hope this helps :)

  • hi digplayer,

what is the suitable circumference of blow end for beginner?how can we know it is suitable for the person's mouth?

  • Hi piraso

Well, this question is hard to answer exactly because everyone is different. I can play most any size for example, but some diameters are very hard for me and others very easy. What I would recommend is start with a didg that uses bees wax for the mouthpiece and experiment with the diameter. I like didgs with no bee wax, but for starting out, the bees wax allows you to experiment with size of the mouthpiece.

  • Aboriginal instrument formed in Australia mate!!

  • Jay, Haribol Prabhu:

Very didactic video, thank's for sharing it, why do you don't post harmonium music videos?

    Krsna bless you.

Caitanya Avatar Das (from Chile yatra)

  • Hari Bol Prabhu

    PAMHO, AGTSP.

Thank you. Yes, I will make more video's with the harmonium and hopefully some songs. I play almost every day, but never seem to get around to putting more videos on You Tube. Now I will be traveling for a couple of months, but when I get back I will do this service.

    Ys, Raghu Das

  • Sound quality is rough to some extent, but you did a really good job on this video explaining it in a different way. Alot of the other videos make it almost frustrating to understand, but I think you got it just right on this one. I'm still trying to 'figure out' circular breathing, but I've never tried anything remotely vocally oriented so I'm sure that's part of the reason somewhere along the line. Either way, thanks for a good video. Props!

  • Thanks Delta. Yes, the quality, it was a compact camera on video setting and I laugh at in myself now that is was as good as it was at all. The circular breathing part is still the most popular area of discussion I see. This is just practice and is easy once learned. All the best to yourself and the other commenter's and happy playing.

  • thanks man you really helped me out with the circular breathing part!

  • Don't no your name, but thank for this clear video. I will try it on the streets of Amsterdam. Greatings from Holland.

  • Thanks a ton for your video. Great reply to the "real Didgeridoo" comment. I'm getting a great sound from this pvc one my brother made me. I'm starting to get the circular breathing. I relate it somewhat to "French inhaling" a cigarette. Air in your cheeks, at the time of inhale through the nose, is pushed out not blown out. This helped me. Fill mouth (cheeks)with air and close lips tight. Exhale through the nose, start breathing in through nose, and PUSH the air out of cheeks. Thanks again

  • Hi, and thx. Excellent, it seems you got it perfect! I wouldn't advocate starting smoking in order to learn circular breathing :)however you definitely have the right idea; breath normal, push air out of cheeks. Thats all there is to it for the basics. When you have that down, there is a cool technique of fast breathing for a rapid playing style. It's one breath for one exhale, really mad playing, lol.

  • is that just pvc or abs pipe? what are the dimensions?

  • Hi, it's a special polymorphic hybrid cross blend developed by NASA in the sixties for use in their space station toilets. Ok, thats not factual, but the truth is I don't remember and just tried inject some humor :) Actually, its really just some plumbing pipe (whatever they make that from) and a reduction attachment I found at the same store with some bees wax around the mouthpiece. There are countless combinations possible (length, width). The important part will be the mouth part hole size.

  • Great video, thanks alot for the "how to" portion and sample <3.

  • Thanks men...

Very nice videos and very helpfull..

  • you should get a REAL didgeridoo

  • Thank you for the suggestion, maybe you could help me there. I don't actually know what a "real" didgeridoo is? Do you mean an expensive wood instrument that termites have bored out, then has been hand chopped and tuned and possibly painted in some indigenous design all by an Australian aboriginal person a real one? Or are you referring to the discarded Landrover tailpipes that the common sense and practical thinking Aboriginal persons also have used as a digeridoo? Or maybe something else?

  • OWNED!!

  • Man!...i can do evrythin till the circular breathing...it so frustrating. Then with the talkin thing, I can soooorta get it but realy only making the sound in my mouth...

  • Just keep trying J1, It's hard to describe maybe but try to get the sound feeling in your stomach to. This "deep" voice can also be blended into the drone and you will get a resonant which sounds far out.

  • Awesome and very helpful vid!!!

But aaaagh!! I can't get the circular breathing down!!.. :/

    I think it's hard...

or maybe I'm just thinking to much?..

    Hm.

  • Thinking to much, maybe, but that made me chuckle, lol. Well, an easy way to get the circular breathing down, or at least understand what is needed, is to fill your cheeks with air, then hold the air and start breathing normally through your nose. Concentrate on that relaxed breathing first. Thats basically what you do with the didg except you just let the air out slowly to continue the drone sound. The timing of the "sniffing" of air will be adjusted according to playing style. :)

  • Bet the neighbors are getting off.

  • cool shit man..thanx 4 the video it helps a lot ..i been searching 4 this instrument 4 quite sometime...i love it when the first time i saw it dude

  • i had to add this to favorites,,,what a great instruction video,,,and once again as with the fujara clip,,you are to modest,,,thanks for shareing

  • Good instruction video on beginning exploring the didj.

    Nice harmonium you got there.

  • Thank you for this. I'm really fascinated by this instrument and would love to be able to play it. I'm going to try to make one with PVC pipe when I get a chance.

  • That's great! There are lots of different materials you can use including the PVC pipe. The important thing in the beginning will be with whatever material you use, to have the size of the hole at the playing such as it's easy to make the drone. The bees wax method can be used to adjust the hole and to experiment. I wish you success and fun playing:)

  • nice!

  • Hello Digplayer. Have you ever seen aboriginal women play the didg? Thanx for answering

  • Hello Petra. Well, I'm not from Aus so my experience is limited to research. I have read that in most Aboriginal tribes it's ok for a women to play in informal situations but not at formal ceremonies.

By the way, the original natives of South America used to play a "didgeridoo". Different name but same idea. A lot of people don't know that and it seems the aboriginals of Aus were not the only ones playing a didge!

    Hope this helps :)

  • Love the video. Can you tell me why only a few women play the didg? Is it traditionaly ment to be played by men only? Or is it a fysical thing?

I am certainly going to give it a try.

    thanx!

  • Hi. Well, traditionally it was played by aboriginal men as set in their culture. Outside of that, I have seen a few women play, but I think more men play because it's generally seen to be more of a "man's" instrument due to maybe the low droning sounds. Physically I'm sure you could play it no problem at all and it is very fun to play as you get better. Good luck and all the best:)

  • i started on a vacuum cleaner pipe too, i wasn't even trying to make a digeridoo sound i was just being silly.. yay for natural talent!!

i moved on to a cardboard roll that use to have material for curtains on it, reeeally long and awesome, makes the perfect noise.. and doesn't smell like a vacuum cleaner..

  • Lol, I love that bit, "and doesn't smell like a vacume cleaner"! Good for you for trying different materials.

Thanks for the comment, all the best :)

  • thts a piece of plastic piping

  • Amazing powers of observation.

  • Fantastic vid. Thanks for the introduction.

  • where do you buy the wax or wat is the name of it or other kind of same waxe

  • Unless you know a bee keeper, you could try craft or hardware store. I even bought a beeswax candle once to use.

  • Thank you!

  • who even plays thoose.. dude get a cornet

  • I guess the over 62 thousand times my other video has been watched sort of says how may people are into it to some degree. Oh, and as for Kirby's, they are well built, but they are no where near the best vacuums available. Tri Star and Dyson preform much better.

  • THis is a big help. thanks man.

  • Don't laugh now but I tried it with a vacuum cleaner and it workd really good :D, it was 3,5cm diameter and 1m long. So I went and bought a pipe that was 5cm diameter and 1,5m long but I run out of air to fast :/ and didn't get a good sound, it was to much bass I think. So I'm gonna buy a knew pipe but what size?

Great video and thank you :D

  • Hi, and I won't laugh at you but I will at myself because I've done the same thing over the years with all sorts of pipes from cardboard tp steel. The question I have is, if the vacuum cleaner pipe worked well, why did you need something else? You could try 1.5m and approx the same diameter as the vacuum pipe. Good luck :)

  • this was an awesome video...I totally get what your saying...thank you.

how awesome to have players that know what they are talking about explain it in simple ways.

    you rule...thank you!

    peace4u

    Boogie

  • what size pipes are you using?!?!

  • Hi, well, the in the video i was using a pipe about 4ft long. You can try different lengths and diameters and of course, materials. Some people have even used cardboard tubes, lol. The idea is to have fun and learn to play thats how i see it. Yes, when you're better, you can buy or make a didg made of wood, but even then, a plastic pipe sounds cleaner than many wood didgs'. I wish you good playing in the future and believe me, it get better and better :)

  • Hey, thanks for your tips.

i can do the like buzzing and circular breath but im having trouble doing when i actualyy do it with the didgeridoo, do you have any tips??

p.s yes it is so much fun!!

  • Hi, yes, it is a common learning experience that many go through. I have thought about how to overcome this for other people, and the best way I found (could be other ways) is to lightly put your lips on the didge and with them together, blow as softly as you possibly can through the lips and then SLOWLY increase the rate (or flow)of air. This should have the effect of "finding" the point at which the lips will vibrate. Hope this helps :)

  • ok ill give it a shot thanks

  • no shit, this just taught me to circular breath, THANKYOU SOOOOO MUCH

  • oooo and its only 2 ft 3

  • Hi, ya, it's interesting how the acoustics work. Usually the larger the bore or tube diameter the deeper the sound is, i think so anyway, lol. The hole you blow into will affect your ability make some higher sounds to, unless you have iron lips, haha. Smaller is easier to make "tooting" noises. Maybe some other people can comment on this to.

  • hey i have one of those shorter ones and it sounds alot lower and not as good as others i've heard. it sounds kinda like a small tuba or somthin. and it does'nt really change its just like bdooooooooooooooooooo. do you now why???

  • Awsome video mate, helped me heaps!

  • muy buena la explicacion de la respiracion circular... me esta saliendo... saludos

  • i have watched several other instructional vids for the didg, but yours seems to explain the circular breathing a lot better. i am really getting excited to get mine and start learning to play!!

  • can you tell me how to brethe through my nose and play digerydoo at the same time and also can you bring us back some f1re crakers

  • it's hard to explain, but you have to practice, first try to blow with your chicks while you breath by your noise, well he explain well.

    Cheers

  • Get a glass of water and a straw...use the air in your CHEEKS to make bubbles in the water while at the same time...breathing in your nose. Even if its just little blasts at first, you'll get it...

  • WHY IS IT SO HARD TO POST A COMMENT

  • Didge measurements for PVC pipe: 1 1/2 inch in diameter; 104 cm = E, 118 cm = D

  • good stufff. your cmments on circular breathing help to demystify it for me. but i'm still having trouble. chees

  • is that grey schedule 40 pvc? how long? dia.? great instruction. i've always wondered how exactly to play. now i really! get to freak the neighbors. a bull roarer works well for this too. especially when they can't see where it's coming from. tx. jimi

  • Great instructional video....you need to take a trip downunder out in the middle of the never never. Don't forget to take your didjeridoo along. You know I bought a didj down under years ago. It's about 5' long and the bell is about 3" but the inner opening is only 1-1/2 inch at the wide end. The mouth end is 2" and the inner opening with the beez wax in place is about an 1-1/2 inch. I am tempted to have the bell end opened up a bit more by a carpenter or someone. Any advice on this?

  • Hi, thank you. Yes, that may be a good idea as it could improve the sound distrubution or "loudness". However, think about getting it done by an instument maker, they know more about sound qualities than a regular carpentor normaly would. That said, if its not broken, don't fix it! Stll, it does "sound" (lol), like a good idea. All the best with that.

  • thanks

  • beautifully spoken. thank you for the clean and thoughtful sharing of your knowledge. how important is a mouthpiece?

  • Hi! I need to clarify one thing in the video about tightening the lips. It's is a small part, which cleans the sound, but, the tongue moving back and forth is what varies the pitch the most, not the lips. The added mouthpiece is not important at all unless the didges natural playing hole isn't the right size in the first place. I prefer no beeswax at all and 90 degree angles on a wood didge. That makes "tooting" easier. I'm making a new video and will explain more about this subject.

  • Bravo!!! Bravo!!

    Thanks so much!

  • Nice video and teaching!

    Tkx!

    Cheers

  • nice video, nice home made didge too, that's a beeswax mouthpiece or one made out of wood?

  • Hi and thx. It's beeswax on a removable top piece that can be put on different lenges of tubing. Cheers

  • That was supposed to be "different Lengths" of tube. I do apologize for have a bad cold that day and sounding terrible :)
