@BayviewFinch I was too. But i sorta liked the video. The whole peformance theme and the flow of it to the sorta strange toned music brought back a warm feeling of nostalgia from when I was a little boy
Innocence Mission released "Black Sheep Wall" and "Tiny Picture" on a 1986 Creation Records compilation project called "Preliminary Hearing". Those may be the other versions that listeners of WJTL in Lancaster, PA remember.
@harleykman I'm fairly certain I still have the record on vinyl. There was another really cool song I think was called "The Tiny Picture" on it. I wish they'd have released that one too. Next time I'm at my storage unit, I'll look for it.
As far as albums are concerned, I don't much like to commit myself to "one of the best ever" statements, but jesus, this album (Innocence Mission S/T) is so heartbreakingly good, sonically and musically ...
Wow. It's amazing to hear so many glowing comments about this group that's dear to my heart! I saw them perform some of the songs (that eventually became this album) when they were students in Philadelphia.. I think we were at Temple Univ. when they were playing.. and I immediately fell in love with them! Fun Fact: They had an album before this "debut' - and the group disliked it so much, that all but a scant few copies were either destroyed, or buried away somewhere!
I think it's more Kate Bush than Cocteaus. I prefer this era over the never stuff, which is far too saccharine for me. Different strokes, I suppose. A great group no matter what. :)
I bought this album after hearing "glow" and "birds of my neighboorhood" and hated it...perhaps because I was expecting it to be like their later work. But, over the years it has become my favortie of all their albums. I remember rediscovering it and feeling like I'd found a treasure... and being a little ticked that I'd previously dismissed it so easily.
A powerful song from an amazing album. I have it on my computer, and it blows me away every time. Such passion and intense focus, I have to say it holds up very well to this day. I'm surprised that they weren't more popular, but I still wonder why, considering the power of their debut, they seemed to go (no disrespect intended) all folksy afterwards. The first time I heard the 2nd and 3rd albums, it was a little jarring, but maybe that's just my expectations not panning out. Still, a great CD.
When I first heard this song when it came out I thought it was the worst song and singing I had ever heard. By the third time I heard it on the radio and every time since (and even now) it makes me cry. With out a doubt one of the most beatiful recordings ever. Her singing would become one of my biggest influences as a singer. Funny how you can hate something so much when you first hear it only to realize the reason you hate it so much is that "IT" touches you so deeply it is almost painful.
Wow! What memories! As a long time Kate Bush and Tori Amos fan, IM was a natural choice of a group to love. I remember listening to their first album over and over. 1989, almost twenty years ago! I miss the old days.
I'm trying to figure out the video. It seems as though Karen at first is running away from the child (and therefore her childhood), but later the running becomes play, rather than fleeing, and she learns to embrace childhood and the feelings/actions associated with it. That would be in keeping with what tIM is about, right?
I love this song and their debut album so much, but after they moved away from Larry Klein as their producer, there music lost this melodic, drum and synth driven sound that was reminiscent of their early influences like Peter Gabriel and notably Kate Bush and Jane Siberry. IM's following albums are more acoustic and folky. I love those albums, too, but the debut remains my favorite.
This is the song that first turned me on to this amazing group. It's like a "new wave" version of folk--totally atmospheric, warm, memorable, stunning. Wonderful! Anyone who likes Kate Bush, Jane Siberry, early Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Clare Fadiman or Jemima Price needs to get their hands on as many Innocence Mission albums as possible.
I used to work for A&M and helped sell the album this track came from ! :-) I loved this track!

Love this song. It takes me back to the late 80s/early 90s even though I never heard the song until 8 or so years ago.
Also, I wasn't sent by Billy.

those gais were big fans of starcraft, apparently, if they took the reveal map cheat for the title of this song 111!!!!1

@ablaaa This song predates starcraft by like 9 years. If anything the cheat code was taken from the title of this song.

These guys are awesome... And they're still releasing great albums, which is more than I can say for most bands who started in the '80s.

You sure you aren't thinking of Kate Bush's "Running up that Hill"? It was released in 1985 and sounds similar to this song.
toothpimp 2 years ago
No definitely not, but I think I found the answer on wikipedia.
Innocence Mission was formed in 1985, and they made a demo record for their local Lancaster radio station - - - the same station I was listening to.
So apparently the version I heard was an earlier version from 1985 or 86. And *this* version is the professional version made a few years later.
Cool.
Now I just need to trackdown that early 1985/86 track

Most Definitely! Then be sure to post it on youtube so we can hear it.
