OK you guys! Let's get the facts right here! This pilot is just about to loose his command because he put himself, the aircraft and the passengers live's on the line. The runway layout at Hamburg (check it out) gave him an alternative runway to land on, without a cross-wind component! But he choose to take a chance, it didn't work out! He made the wrong decision, and apparently landed safely on the alternative runway which he should have done in the first place. He is not a hero just a bad pilot

How would you know it's difficult piloting a plane unless you've flown one yourself? Don't assume anything until you've tried it yourself. Lot's of people find it difficult to drive a car but it's all relative to one's own aptitude. This is a near miss and not a scrap on the concrete runway.

If the plane wing hit a hard surface the wing would have surely been damaged.

I believe this was a close touch but no ultimate contact with the hard top.

The flight crew did a great job here.

Remember this plane was never removed from active flight duty. It was airbourne the very next day.

Even a kiss on the hard top at this speed would have surely removed enough of the wing and create a catasthrophic sitution.

What he SHOULD have done, when he realised he'd f***ed up the approach, was call to the Tower that he was going around and (assuming this was an ILS approach) flown the missed approach procedure.
