@megajames3000 Yes i agree with you on that. I must admit that playing with fewer notes is a lot more difficult, but i can only hope that as my phrasing will develop it'll be easier for me to use less notes. Thanks for commenting.
@megajames3000 That set up works for me, but i think that it all depends on how you use you rig. Since that vid which was shot, quite a while ago, I went through a Deluxe Reverb, and a few Marshall heads and always ended up sounding pretty much the same. So i try not to think about gear as much as i did... Even if i can't help it sometimes ;)
@megajames3000 Played a '64 Super Reverb for about a year and loved the sound, but i'd rather deal with a separate head and cab. The SR was just too big and heavy for me and i prefer the thump of a close back cab.
most of these gear demos on youtube are pretty helpful, but it just puts things into a whole different perspective seeing them actually being demoed in a full band setting....thanks for posting! great playing!
This is what guitar playing is about. Throw every feeling and energy you have on the guitar. This is what happens when you do that. And it doesnt matter if you use a $100 guitar with a $50 amp, If you play like this it always sounds good. Thanks for posting this video man.
Thank you very much Xander and i totally agree with you. I f you play like you mean it then it's going to more out that way. I love gear, but you right; Playing through a cheap rig with conviction will always sound better that faking it though $10.000 worth of gear.
My setting always change depending on the gig, and i can't remember exactly the setting that night, but i usually have the volume a bit under 5 (when it starts to compress) bass 3 treble 61/2. I use 12/54 string gauge in standard 440 tuning and i think that's a big part of the sound.
Thanks you're too kind!! I guess just close your eyes and don't think too much. Just let it flow. I've learned most of what i know just by listening not playing.
La meilleur place pour les T-shirts!! Un jours quand je serais grand je serais commendité par eux!! :D Merci d'être venu les gars!! J'ai comme manqué votre départ, mais plus la soirée avancait, plus mon champ de vision rapetissait ;)
Great Tone man,I am waiting for my 59 reissue to get shipped from the mainland, can't wait! So what kind of pedals are you using? I was thinking of going with the Ibanez Ts9 and some kind of Reverb pedal. Any suggestion's?
Thanks!! Well we all got our favorites and the TS9 is a cool pedal, but that night (and for a few years until it got stolen) i was using an Analog.man Sunface fuzz pedal to boost the Bassman. Check my "High Gear" playlist where i posted a clip using the Sun Face at home called "clean up that fuzz" (read the info, it explain how i do it) The trick is that i'm not using it as a fuzz but more as a dirty booster.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
that song sounds best when the guitarist is singing. when they are separated it sounds like the two are battling for limelight. better rehearse it fellas. call and response; DON'T PLAY LICKS UNTIL THE SINGER IS FINISHED WITH THE LINE! THEN YOU RESPOND WITH YOUR LEAD LINES.
i just love listening to your playin and noticed in one of your comments u mentioned that you use .12 guage strings
i'm lookin to step up from my .10's which are way too flimsy and weak for me (both tone and strength wise).
i was wondering if your strat required any adjustments to the nut size or the truss rod when you put those on and maybe if you noticed a true tonal difference between lighter and heavier strings?
Thank you!! Just some basic stuff like enlarging the nut grooves a bit, lowering the PUs and a slight adjustment to the truss rod, but that's all really. the thing is to find a G string that work the best for you. i started with an plain.024, to a .022 which i was quite happy with, but if you play live 3 days straight, they get pretty painful to bend lol!! now i'm using a 0.20 and it's a good compromise.
yep, your sound is fuller and stable. i just have to tune before each sets and i'm ok.
Incredible Blues feel very good sound and tight ensemble playing, I like the vocals as well and bass very to the point and supportive, great band, greets Vic.
Awesome playing Rob!! Just a question about amp suggestions, I had a fender deville 410(that baby was loud), sold it and bought a blues junior, thinking about getting a bigger amp, theres a fender blues deville 410 for $1500AUD and a 59 bassman reissue for $2400, the bassman doesnt have reverb, which i dont really use extensively anyways, and the reissues have a printed curcuitboard unlike the originals, is the bassman worth the extra money? I pretty much dig the blues...
Wow! things are expensive in Australia!! if i were you, i would keep the Jr and buy a 2x12" close back cab and play the Jr through that!! that's what i do with a deluxe reverb a lot. you get more clean headroom, dispersion and punch. it's cheap than buying another amp (those Jr are quite cool sounding!!) still have the portability of the Jr for rehearsal/studio/small gigs, and a more powerful rig for bigger venues or just drive you neighbors crazy ;)
fender bassman is great! Been playing it for over a year now and each day i fall in love with it over and over again. Best buy I did in my life! you won't regret it :-).
I commented a few weeks ago askin if you'd reccommend the bassman
i actually went with a fender blues deville but it had a problem so i sent it back. When I recieved the new one (or what I thought would have been the new one) I opened the box and there was the bassman re-issue. I couldn't believe it because I probably would have gotten it but didn't have the money . You are right, this amp is awesome but loud. Thanks for the advice again.
you dirty mother fucker... i love you. i hope you dont mind that im going to pick apart every one of your licks because they are fucking ridiculously beautiful
i just have 3 questions for you: exactly what wah are you using, what kind of pickups are in that strat, and where the fuck did you get those fingers?
LOL!! Thanks Dan that's a really nice comment and i appreciate it bro!!
the wah is a Vox , the Strat is a Fender CS relic from when Vince Cunetto was making them,( strung with 12-56 in standard tuning) with stock PUs. as for the fingers, mom and dad made them ;)
Thanks!! i use it fairly clean at around 4/5 where it starts to compress a bit. after that it doesn't get much louder, you just get more drive. so yeah you have to crank it. that's why i'd rather use pedals to get my sound and keep control on the volume, but like many old amps, some Bassman are loud and others don't have much clean headroom depending on what tubes you're using and the bias of the amp. mine is good enough for bar gigs where it cuts through the band without being too loud.
Dr Z's are cool. some have the AC-30 vibe but at a more manageable volume; and if you don't need much clean headroom, those 18 watts Marshall are pretty cool!!
Rob, is your eternity lovepedal the black version which is pretty much point to point (but with a small pc board in there as well)? Also, do you find your analogman comprossor gives you a pretty loud boost for solo's with some extra sustain, or just more of a mids boost? I know you like to use it for boosting solos and was wondering if it offers a really good boost. Keep up the great work man!
Mine's the one they call "roadhouse edition" which has the less gain of the bunch. the older dark brown, handwired one. i'm not using it anymore these days though. i do still use the comp as a boost for either my Analog.man modded Maxon SD9 or an '82 TS9. the comp does not have a massive boost, but mine has a slight treble boost mod that is pretty cool and does the trick for me. not much extra gain but nice sustain that goes easily into feedback. check our Radar love vid for an example.
Hi there, excellent job and tone! Just wondering-what year is your bassman head and is it modded at all or all stock? I'm from Montreal myself and will keep an eye out for any local gigs-are you guys playing anywhere in town soon?
Thanks!! we're actually at le Bistro à Jojo tonight. the Bassman is a '64 and stock. it was set clean (about 4) and i was using the Sun Face to boost it.
Merci Rob-I'll be missing that show tonight but definately catch you guys next time-what's your band's schedule for February in Montreal? Also, quick question for you -are any of your amps modded at all (ie your 73 marshall, fender deluxe/bassman??) I know most of the amp techs in town, and just wondering if anyone has done anything to beef them up a bit. They sure sound fat, but credit must be given to the player's fingers as well!
they're all stock. i just crank them all a bit where the amp starts to compress but before any distortion (between 4 and 5 seem to be the sweet spot on most of my amp) and then use either an OD, a compressor or a Fuzz to boost the amp. you can check our myspace page we got a few "studio jams" that you might enjoy, and see our gig schedule.
as for pedals, it's the usual stuff. fuzz, wah... at that time i was using an Analog.man Sun Face as a boost for solos, but that one got stolen. you can see (and hear!) my pedalboard in a few short clips that i've posted. go check 'em out... hope you'll like them as well!!
Hi Rob, I am wondering about the Fender Bassman that you play with. Could I get a better overdrive sound with the Bassman as opposed to a Fender Twin? I am asking out of respect to the fact that J. Marshall copied the Bassman circuit for the Superlead he designed. Could I get some of the same grit and distortion that I am looking for playing my guitar through a Bassman? Thanks for your time Groove, you folks sound goooood!!
actually, Marshall copied the Bassman for the JTM 45. like the bassman, the JTM 45 is about 40 watts and has a tube rectifier.
the thing with old amps is that you could play 5 Bassman of the same month and year and get 5 different results. i had a lot of Bassman over the years i kept that one because it had the cleanest headroom wise. some distort early, some are clean with a tight bass end, some mushy when cranked...
...but they definitely break (way) earlier than a Twin which i've never liked apart from the low powered tweed ones.
there's a lot of "boutique" builders who are making point to point JTM 45 clones for less than a Marshall reissue, with better component. you should check them out if you're into the early Marshall/Bassman sound.
Just saw I'm Not too far from that bar ! Bain oui,st I gonna go there check out da band tres bientot. You guys rock.I hear about jam knights there.Would be cool.Bring back sum good ol memoires t'nak ! Rock-on
thanks to all of you for all the great comments!! it's nice to know that some people like the way we try to cover Jimi's stuff, and i REALLY appreciate that you're taking the time to let me know :)

Thanks!! we're actually at le Bistro à Jojo tonight. the Bassman is a '64 and stock. it was set clean (about 4) and i was using the Sun Face to boost it.

They sure sound fat, but credit must be given to the player's fingers as well!
skytone27 3 years ago
they're all stock. i just crank them all a bit where the amp starts to compress but before any distortion (between 4 and 5 seem to be the sweet spot on most of my amp) and then use either an OD, a compressor or a Fuzz to boost the amp. you can check our myspace page we got a few "studio jams" that you might enjoy, and see our gig schedule.

Wow, very good! How were you running the Bassman, e.g, OD pedals? Or was it just cranked?
joshlespaul1952 3 years ago
Thanks!! the Bassman is set pretty clean at about 4, use the Sun Face to boost the gain, and control everything with my guitar volume.

Awesome! :D What kind of pedals are you using? ☻
Hb35Jazz 3 years ago
thanks!! i'm glad that you like it!!
as for pedals, it's the usual stuff. fuzz, wah... at that time i was using an Analog.man Sun Face as a boost for solos, but that one got stolen. you can see (and hear!) my pedalboard in a few short clips that i've posted. go check 'em out... hope you'll like them as well!!

THACONCH 3 years ago 4
actually, Marshall copied the Bassman for the JTM 45. like the bassman, the JTM 45 is about 40 watts and has a tube rectifier.
the thing with old amps is that you could play 5 Bassman of the same month and year and get 5 different results. i had a lot of Bassman over the years i kept that one because it had the cleanest headroom wise. some distort early, some are clean with a tight bass end, some mushy when cranked...
robertgroove66 3 years ago
...but they definitely break (way) earlier than a Twin which i've never liked apart from the low powered tweed ones.
there's a lot of "boutique" builders who are making point to point JTM 45 clones for less than a Marshall reissue, with better component. you should check them out if you're into the early Marshall/Bassman sound.
