I love how young people today are all into old stuff. It historically didn't used to be like that (as much). It's interesting that she's expected to have seen these 80's movies (Goonies, 16 Candles, etc). It's like expecting a 30 year old to be well-versed in 70's stuff. In fact, I bet 20 year-olds know more about 70's culture than 30 year-olds (but of course not more than 40 year-olds). Why all of this old culture interest? Is it because of shows like Family Guy that reference old stuff?

@weedipikia Wait a minute. This might be the "20 year cycle" thing. People who are in early adolescence during time period X forever identify with that period, but also with X minus 20 years or so. So if you're born in 1980 and come of age during the whole early 90's grunge thing you'll also be fascinated with hippies and other early 70's stuff. Similarly people who were in their early teens around 2000-2005 will be fascinated with 80's stuff.

@weedipikia In the age of the internet everything has become a meme. MP3s have democratized the music consumption cycle - and between these two facts, *good* music gets recognized and popularized. And referenced.

An entirely different explanation could be that the 30 year-olds sorta evolved a counter-culture to their parents' style. This would then be dispelled by the next generation, and the classics would resurface.

In any case, I think Family Guy is the reaction, not the cause.
