We had a great time at this quad show. There were about 8 generator powered spotlights outside of the bowl. I wondered why they were there. Duh. They fired them and I went to heaven. Feel lucky to have been the 16 year old Flintridge boy at the Hollywood Bowl. The Green cash register for money was insane.
Another hidden gem that I am blessed to have heard. Saw the Floyd do the Wall, and unfortunately it was the only live performance of them I've ever seen and heard.
its funny this is a pretty late pre-recording "eclipse" version of breathe. First of all, gilmour doesnt have the riff approach he had to the earlier performances, but he keeps the opening solo. Interesting, see this is how bands are supposed to evolve.
where is the video from this? you know the dark side of the moon dvd, they show a video clip with the music, where is the footage? no one seems to have the full tune...
@hotlanta71 The video on the 'Making of the Dark Side of the Moon' film was taken at the Brighton Dome, and I think they MAY have used some footage from Earls Court. But the music used is taken from the soundboard, which does beg the question "Why won't they just commercially release concerts they used to tape?"
the music of Pink Floyd to me is a reflection of one big giant acid trip. you know how when your on acid you feel happy and sad on and off?
SO MANY Pink Floyd songs sound like that! for example: in comfortably numb the verses sound so low and sad and then the chorus sounds uplifting and joyful. the lyrics dont necessarily describe an acid trip but what the say sounds like something you would say on acid. "Will the key unlock my mind?"
This is awesome. I got stub and a program from this show because some dude left it in his copy of Meddle and forgot to take it out when he sold it to the record store. Even the dude who checks the vinyl didn't see it.
the layers of instruments in this song is the greatest signature of Floyd...all the musicians are playing their own jams, but melding it together flawlessly...I think that they were the first ever band to be capable of doing this...other bands were so scripted until this time...the best analogy I have is looking at actors from the early 1930's and looking at the actors today...early times had method acting, whereas today its multidimensional...Floyd had this down almost 40 years ago!!! WOW!!
@sillentdragon Not all other bands, were scripted some of the great German bands like CAN especially. I love Floyd, but I find them often highly overrated and over credited. I don't think their core fans have heard much of what other bands were doing at the time. Floyd weren't the only ones doing experimental stuff, and I fibnd some other bands like the aforementioned CAN much better at experimentation or improv or talent.
In fairness, I have heard better recordings of the Travel Section... this is a bit shapeless by comparison. I like the better versions of Travel Section - yes it evolved into On The Run, but it's still a good bit of messing about with basic blues.
There will never be another Pink Floyd. But these days we have bands like Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Tool, and Dream Theater to pay our respect to. They take what Pink fLoyd once did and add other influences to their music.....
I enjoy alot of progressive rock bands but, Pink Floyd was the one band that knew what notes to hit, what notes to leave out, and they showed that your music does not have to be be overly technical, or be based in a million odd time signatures to be impressive and considered progressive. I started playing guitar 17 years ago at age 7 because of Gilmour and this band. And their music honestly will never get old....
@santiagodebellavista very true, personally when I write I strive to choose the right chords and notes. Speed doesnt mean a thing to me. Sure, I like learning new techniques on guitar and so on but, I do not strive to be Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar. I feel properly placed chords, notes, melodies, solos, and riffs in music means hell of a lot more then showing off how flashy you can play. One well played note means more then a dozen poorly placed notes...
@SephynnXx ok, i meant the right chord progression (e.g.: this song, Em7 A A5 A), then it s ok you can play. and btw petrucci, vai, etc, are not good musicians, the kinda floyd style is the best. but anyway, you re right
well thats good for you, you should be proud....lol

god, i wish there was a studio version of "the travel sequence"... all respects to the rock gods and their mysterious ways, but that was the biggest screw up in the history of pink floyd, putting "on the run" on dsotm...
The Travel Sequence (On The Run) kinda reminds me of that old-ass instrumental "Tequila". Can't remember who did that, but that's what it reminds me of.
@Tron486 Exactly what I'm doing now. Stressful day at work, followed by a few beers at home and listening to live versions of "Breathe/Time" and "On The Turning Away."
There are various blogs and torrent sites where you can download Floyd shows. If you find one from 1972, where they play the early version of Dark Side Of The Moon, it'll be on there. It changed a bit though, as they developed it. The version from The Rainbow in early 72 sounds pretty different to this.
if you have the appropriate anti virus software it will always warn you of shit from limewire, but essentially you are right, however the quality of this clip is hardly great.
They wrote the whole album, took it on tour to practice and develop it,(im sure it changed night to night)and they finally to it into the studio to make final changes and to put it tape.
waters and mason are so underestimated as a drummer and a bassist, but this proves every1 wrong, mason is looked down upon since other drummers can play "faster"...so? his drumming sounds so unique from others, and waters has that certain sound to his bass that i cant find anywhere else, those 2 are probably the best drummer and bassist ever, gilmour and wright, i dnt need to say anything bout em, we already know they kick ass!!! *cough* live 8 *cough*

@swans1997 I looked up this band CAN and dont see the appeal really. I see the talent but musically could not relate on any level to them. @SephynnXx Well, to be fair, when I first heard The Wall, back when it first came out and my first time really hearing Floyd, aside from "Money" on the radio back in `73, I thought they were boring bastards, of course further listening, to entire albums rather than just a set of songs convinced me they really were worth my time. Meddle is one of my top Floyd's ,Animals I've heard enough really, doesn't excite me like it used to, and Can, I think still offer me more musical as well as sonic discovery, like great jazz, whereas Floyd seem kinda one note and rote for me. Tastes are varied, don't l listen to the same thing all the time. I hav Opeth's Deliverence. Good album. I even like Meshuggah. One of my top faves is SWANS.
