The solution isnt to ban AKC and breeds, the solution is to make cosmetic docking and cropping illegal. Other countries have done it. It's wrong to cut off pieces of a living thing, and a dog of all things, for the sole purpose of changing how it looks.

This will lead you to great articles about the sad fact that millions (not thousands) of dogs and cats are euthanized in our country each year. 25% of those pets are purebred. After reading the stats, I think you will see why I am sympathetic to PETA's criticism of breeders & their questioning of the "purebred = better" message the AKC offers to the American people, even if I don't agree with their use of the KKK.
@alirolls There's something I think you're missing. It's the fact that mixed breeds are actually a lot more common than purbreds, exactly for that reason too. Purebreds are less common because not as many people demand a dog that is one hundred percent that dog. Most people would go with a dog they, for example, think looks good or is friendly or even just is there to keep you company. Most people don't care about having a purebred, so naturally less are gonna die. There are less of them.
Mixed-breed dogs & purebred dogs are both wonderful. There are too many of BOTH mixed-breeds and purebreds, and breeders perpetuate myth that mixed breeds are inferior. Still want a purebred? "Don't rule out your local shelter. It is possible to find purebreds, though you may have to look a little harder. According to Petfinder co-founder Betsy Saul, approximately 25 percent of adoptable animals in shelters or rescue groups are purebred."

This ad is not aimed at purebred dogs. It is aimed at breeders. (People. Not dogs.) 4,000,000 pets are euthanized each year in the US alone. Many people consider shelter dogs or mixed breed dogs to be "broken" and inferior to purebred dogs. This ad is attempting to break people out of the belief that purebred = best. How many people believe that a dog from a breeder will be better behaved, healthier, or more of a "family dog"? Breeders + purebred/superiority myth = wonderful shelter dogs die.

A dog with bad bloodlines will have genetic problems. You wouldn't want to perpetuate suffering, so you don't breed pets that suffer. The AKC is there to make sure that genetic defects don't get introduced into the gene pool - if a dog has flaws, it's not any less of a dog, and will make a great pet, but is not elegible to be bred. There are enough dogs as it is.

This will lead you to great articles about the sad fact that millions (not thousands) of dogs and cats are euthanized in our country each year. 25% of those pets are purebred. After reading the stats, I think you will see why I am sympathetic to PETA's criticism of breeders & their questioning of the "purebred = better" message the AKC offers to the American people, even if I don't agree with their use of the KKK.

@alirolls There's something I think you're missing. It's the fact that mixed breeds are actually a lot more common than purbreds, exactly for that reason too. Purebreds are less common because not as many people demand a dog that is one hundred percent that dog. Most people would go with a dog they, for example, think looks good or is friendly or even just is there to keep you company. Most people don't care about having a purebred, so naturally less are gonna die. There are less of them.

People who would like to look at an issue with a critical eye will attempt to decipher the message being delivered. Of course, you can disagree and feel offended.

This ad is not aimed at purebred dogs. It is aimed at breeders. (People. Not dogs.) 4,000,000 pets are euthanized each year in the US alone. Many people consider shelter dogs or mixed breed dogs to be "broken" and inferior to purebred dogs. This ad is attempting to break people out of the belief that purebred = best. How many people believe that a dog from a breeder will be better behaved, healthier, or more of a "family dog"? Breeders + purebred/superiority myth = wonderful shelter dogs die.

A dog with bad bloodlines will have genetic problems. You wouldn't want to perpetuate suffering, so you don't breed pets that suffer. The AKC is there to make sure that genetic defects don't get introduced into the gene pool - if a dog has flaws, it's not any less of a dog, and will make a great pet, but is not elegible to be bred. There are enough dogs as it is.

Besides it's way more organized to pick what kind of dog we want. People won't know which dogs have what personalities if they're all mixed. What if they end up with a dog that doesn't suit them? Then it'll go to a shelter, and if it's a PETA shelter, it'll end up dead in about a year.

Regarding randomly bred dogs being a problem in shelters: People should not have to adopt a pet because someone else was irresponible enough to let their mutt breed another mutt. Spay your mutt and end the problem.
People do have the right to enjoy a purpose bred dog of the breed, size, disposition, and maintenace requirements that meets their lifestyle.

I would never pay $5000 for a pet when there are plenty of mixed breeds to be adopted. Rail about other inequalities in the world: Pure Breed dogs are not a threat to the future of the planet.. Ahhh, not like anyone cares about a simple comment, but I believe this advertisement is directed at people who will explicitly DENY a mutt a home in favour of a purebred dog. Someone should explain, however, just how this advertisement puts down those who have suffered racism.

I would imagine this demonstration comes as a slap to the face to anybody who lived during MLKs time.
But then, what would PETA know?
They didn't have to live as second class citizens, or ever experienced getting beaten to a bloody pulp for demanding equality in a racist society.

@MrJonepee : No, wrong, because gorrila's and lemurs are actually different species. In contrast, all dogs belong to ONE and the same species ("Canis lupus familiaris" in Latin), but through selective breeding we ended up with the various breeds.
So you, sir, don't make a LOAD of sense...
BTW, I'm not saying anything pro or contra this PETA ad, I'm just a biologist pointing out the difference between species and breeds.

Wow peta really? Its really easy to balance buying purebreds and adopting. I have two mixes i adopted and a pure bread basset hound. Isint the AKC for preserving the bloodlines of dogs in cats that have been around for centuries?
