That same thing happened to me when the ghast destroyed the nether portal. I was playing im my little brothers world and he started crying and i didn't have a flint and steel. It took an hour for a ghast to shoot a fireball to start it again...
Sigh, what ever block type is most present from a top down view of a 8 by 8 area makes up one square on the map. So their house would most likely be one beige square surrounded by green and sand colour.
