Just get an I7 basic like a 920 and a basic mid level Nvidia card and go for water cooling and a decent power supply. You will thank me later. See my channel for some videos.
I have this same processor. I overclocked it to 3.4 ghz because I have the Stock HSF in the computer at the moment. didn't have to turn up the voltage, not really sure if I am missing any other steps in this since this is the first cpu I overclocked.I disabled cool n quiet , but may turn it back on. I OCed my gpu a bit too, but turned it off. I don't like the idea of the fans running 24/7.
All i did for this processor was increase the multiplier in bios.. any other steps I should take?
Post another vid when you get your highest stable clock. I'm looking into the 940, was gonna go for the 955 or maybe the new 965(which has SHIT performance) but decided to save some money.
PS You should listen to some SOAD or KoRn, metal with a little more substance than OOOOHHHHHohhhhhhOOOOOOoooooOOOOOOHHHHHhhhhhhh
My higest clock is 3.9GHz and I can't really make a video of it because since I am not gaming anymore I dropped the clock to 3.5GHz, I replaced my triple 120mm rad by a single 120mm rad hooked on a silent fan so I don't have a jet engine anymore beside me.
I'm even planning to sell the whole rig in a few weeks when college is going to start back.
And for the bands you suggested, I've been a necrophagist fan for a quite a while now and I'm not planning to quit listening to that :P
im gona shove the 150$ i saved ,on my Phenom 940, and shove t up ur arrogant, smug ass... Unless you are going to predict where water droplets are going to fall in hurricane winds, there is no point in having an i7. Not even for gaming.
hahahaha yes actually there is for the most part there isnt alot of difference in gaming but some games there would be the difference between playable and non playable and as for everything else lots of apps the i7 is 50% faster what you have for cooling?
meh... if you like the i7 and actually think that it was well worth the extra money you put on your entire computer well good for you.
i'm not gaming at all anymore and I'm about to sell the whole rig to whoever is ready to give me a good offer or if that doesn't happen im just going to sell the case, WC crap, gfx card and use it as a web server, mail server, 2 shell servers and file server running on 4 different OS... and for that I would never use a i7 because it's overkill and too expensive
With my current hardware and budget, the answer is no.
I could have pushed over what I did in the video, but that would have killed my hardware in the long run. And again I could have pushed it even higher and killed my hardware nearly instantly.
Having fried hardware just to see a unstable clock speed for a short period of time is useless.
I am not playing games anymore so I lowered it down from 3.9GHz to 3.5GHz and I'm pretty pleased with the performance for a BSD workstation.
Nice Setup!! Liquid cooling must be worth the money to get those kinds of temperatures!! I've overclocked my 940 to 3.4 which is not huge, but anything past that...not much of a difference in my opinion.
hey i need help with overclocking, i'm using a biostar TA790GX 128M with a Phenom II x4 940 3.0Ghz and i'm using a stock cooler too so which Ghz should i overclock to when i'm using the normal stock cooler?
Well you might try to raise the clack to 3.5GHz and bumb the vcore by 0.025v or 0.05v and see the temps.
If it's too high, drop the clock to 3.4GHz (or w/e clock that can be kept under 60C at full load), if the temps at 3.5GHz are good, you could try pushing it up a bit more again until the temps reaches ~60C under full load.
Oh, okay. BTW, the stock heatsink/fan look pretty good. The heatsink has 4 copper heat pipes and pretty good aluminum fins. Do you think it would be any good for moderate over-clocking, like say, 300-400 MHz (from 3GHz to 3.4GHz)? At what voltage core do you need it to get it stable at 3.4 GHz?
No matter the card it will be a problem. It's utterly useless to OC the pcie frequency. It gives no advantage and the only thing you might see by raising either the clock or voltage is a nice not working 4870.
my 3.8 ghz oc is still fucking up,i think i'll try lowering the pcie, did you leave your pcie frequency @ stock btw? and what about nb and ht frequency?,i'm sure they have something to do with the oc,although i think it might be load temps on this chip.
Just to let you know in case you didn't... when you OC with your bios and you start AOD after, AOD puts back all the default settings except the clocks iirc.
So if you need 1.5v to be at 3.8 and start AOD the voltage is going to drop at the stock (~1.3v) and make your rig crash.
Also the voltages values in AOD are completely screwed compared to what it really gives to you rig.
Use the bios to make the changes and tweak you voltages and settings, then use a piece of software like prime 95 and 3Dmark06 to test for the stability.
If something is not stable, reboot, use the bios again, boot, use prime95 and the other then repeat until you can get an overclock stable enough (6+ hours) then when acheive go play a game to see if the rig is really stable. It should be 100% after.
wouldn't suppose you could tell me how the hell you got it all stable @ 3.9ghz lol
i cant make mine get into vista 64 at 3.9ghz,3.8ghz yes but thats unstable too,it doesnt seem to want 1.5 vid voltage although 1.45 seems around the mark.
40-45 is pretty good. I would say that 60-65C at 100% load would be the max I would tolerate.
1.5v won't harm the cpu I'm pretty sure. I had mine running at that for the past 5-6 months and I didn't see a thing about my system proving me that it could be harmful.
You are way better to learn to OC with the bios. You will have the most control over your system that you could get.
Now, ive read some posts, and i understand that you dont like Asus, anyways, i got the Asus M4A79 Deluxe mobo, Air Cooling (Dont know which ones) and i run 3,6 Ghz @ 1.35 V and my AOD shows 40-45 Celcius under load.
Do you know what temps that are safe?
Are you sure anything around 1.5 V wont harm the system? sure it says 1.55 as maximum, but still though.
Now, im using TurboV to Overclock with, is BIOS better?
oh, I step it up, of course. I'm asking on the boards for some help now..
The highest stable clock has been 3.7g, tested with Prime. I think it has a lot to do with the MoBo.. It's an Asus m4a78 pro. It was supposed to be my temp board when I was running my GA MA790GX DS4H..
That chip as a safe max vcore of about 1.55v and that voltage is needed when you reach near 3.8-4GHz. Going over that will nearly for sure damage your rig over time and it would be stupid to do that. 4.5GHz and 5GHz must require in the 1.65-1.7v which would be complete suicide without mentioning the voltage bump needed to run the board stable too.
You people need to stop reading the AMD marketing crap and start reading actual facts about that chip!
Sure it can run at 3.9GHz on air because ~1.5v is not that bad for producing heat but going over that would be plain stupid.
If you look at the video where they use LN they use over 1.85v for the vcore and that's madness.
No wonder they got a box of cpu and board near them... they could kill as many as they want and AMD wuld just give them more (which is not the case with me if you understand the situation).
Yeah, you're right. I clearly have no fucking idea what I'm talking about and that's why I'm posting on videos about Phenom II 940 overclocking with watercooling.
Haha come on... you are only 15 and try to give me advice on a rig that I know perfectly and built myself.
The bios temp for the cpu (core0) is screwed up (showing about 10-12C) lower than the real temps and even Everest is having troubles with the temps.
It's reading the core0 temp (which is the 'main' temp) and I have to get an accurate reading the core 1 and 2 as the 'main' one to get a good idea of the real temperature of the CPU.
Why I am using AOD for temps is simple, it's the only one that gives me good temps for all the cores (including the core0).
All the other software get the wrong/retarded sensor and give me a bad reading.
So if I'm trying to monitor the temps and usage while running a stress test or something else it's the application that gives me the most accurate result and the best GUI possible to read all that.
I wasn't saying that using AOD for temperature readings was a bad idea, I'm saying that overclocking with it in the first place is a bad idea because it's less stable and limited (you can't crank the volts all the way up).
You will see a boost in performance if you up the HT-Link Speed, you still have it at stock (1.8). But upping this makes getting a higher clock speed harder. I have opted for 2.6GHz HT-Link and 3.6GHz on 1.3750V. Could get 4.2 though with 1.8 HT-Link, but would prefer not to cook my CPU with 1.5V !
did AMD just lower the price of this chip? cuz last week the website im building my shopping cart for my computer posted the price as about $230, and today its $190, same as the 920 is
It's not satanic... it's just awesome and well for the cans of coke that is the result of a few hours of staying around trying to overclock the cpu :P
I wouldn't get an intel, they have a tendency to only outlast the warranty for about a minute. You get a 1 year warranty for a reason (they are pre-overclocked). That's why AMD give a 3 year warranty.
This guy is like me, 10 coke cans around the computer, and all of them empty.
Nice water loop =]
I wanted a watercooling loop, but they're too expensive for a decent one.
Some awesome Finnish guys got it to 6.5GHz on liquid nitrogen/liquid helium... That was cool. They started pouring it on their heads, and it comes up on the screen "AMD does not recommend you pour liquid helium on your head or your friend's head"... AMD owns.
Hey I got a 920 instead of a 940 and kinda regret not getting the black ed. but oh well...This is my first build and was wondering how high I safely get it oc'd..I got a Phenom II 920 cooled by a Cool Master Hyper z600r with 2 120mm fans connected to it on a M3A79-T Deluxe powered by a Pc Power & Cooling 750w Silencer..
This has been flagged as spam show

I can give you tips if you know what you are doing at first, but you must know a bit what you are doing.
Try to go read some tutorial on how to overclock and after try to screw around a bit with your board and cpu to test it.
When you are going to be comfortable with your system and still have problem with it, ask for advice and I'll be glad to help.

What's the max. clock speed to which you can get this CPU on water cooling? I'm guessing 4.3 GHz or so?
Atheismrulez 2 years ago
3.9GHz without killing the board or CPU.
4GHz is doable (as you can see in the video) but it requires too much vcore to get it stable.
m1dget 2 years ago

Atheismrulez 2 years ago
Up to 3.4GHz you could have it 100% stable with the stock vcore and settings.
3.5GHz is about +0.025v more (one 'bump') to have it 100% stable.

What is your highest stable clock?
m1dget 2 years ago
hi,i have this chip..or atleast i think ,is this a phenom 1 or a phenom 2?
because no matter what i do i cant make it boot at 4ghz without going past the max voltage recommended by amd.
MCSpidah 2 years ago
9850 (phenom 1) = 3.5GHz max that you will be able to boot with safe voltages
940 = 3.8-3.9GHz max that you will be able to boot with safe voltages (safe for the 940 = 1.55v.)
I'm currently at 3.9GHz and 1.5v which is ok.
I would personally not recommende going over 1.5-1.525v.

You people need to stop reading the AMD marketing crap and start reading actual facts about that chip!
m1dget 2 years ago
Sure it can run at 3.9GHz on air because ~1.5v is not that bad for producing heat but going over that would be plain stupid.
If you look at the video where they use LN they use over 1.85v for the vcore and that's madness.
No wonder they got a box of cpu and board near them... they could kill as many as they want and AMD wuld just give them more (which is not the case with me if you understand the situation).
m1dget 2 years ago
Yes I do understand you !
zafert85 2 years ago
great
see my video at 3.9 ghz on air stable. what do you think about my air cooling ?
stephane082009 2 years ago
You should really take the time to overclock properly with your BIOS.
WhefXLR 2 years ago
And I think you should take time to read the darn description...
I never but never OC with that AOD pos.
It's a worthless piece of software and the only reason I use it is to see the temps and voltage of the cores.
Else than that it's worthless.
m1dget 2 years ago
For the record, I did read the discription.
The reason i'm saying just use BIOS is because I would trust a program for overclocking as much as I could program one. And I can only program BASIC.
WhefXLR 2 years ago
o_O
right... right...
Well here's for you
10 PRINT "stop talking about things you don't know"
20 PRINT "go read a lil and learn something before making me explain why you are wrong"
30 GOTO 10
m1dget 2 years ago
Yeah, you're right. I clearly have no fucking idea what I'm talking about and that's why I'm posting on videos about Phenom II 940 overclocking with watercooling.
WhefXLR 2 years ago
Haha come on... you are only 15 and try to give me advice on a rig that I know perfectly and built myself.
The bios temp for the cpu (core0) is screwed up (showing about 10-12C) lower than the real temps and even Everest is having troubles with the temps.
It's reading the core0 temp (which is the 'main' temp) and I have to get an accurate reading the core 1 and 2 as the 'main' one to get a good idea of the real temperature of the CPU.
m1dget 2 years ago
Why I am using AOD for temps is simple, it's the only one that gives me good temps for all the cores (including the core0).
All the other software get the wrong/retarded sensor and give me a bad reading.
So if I'm trying to monitor the temps and usage while running a stress test or something else it's the application that gives me the most accurate result and the best GUI possible to read all that.
m1dget 2 years ago
I wasn't saying that using AOD for temperature readings was a bad idea, I'm saying that overclocking with it in the first place is a bad idea because it's less stable and limited (you can't crank the volts all the way up).
WhefXLR 2 years ago
I will never OC with that... it's just tho most complete pos software that I can think of for OCing.
Heck I think that Easytune might be better than it <_<
And yes you can raise the voltage really high. I think it could go past 1.75v (can't remember exactly) and same with all the other voltages.
m1dget 2 years ago
Oh, I was basing the voltage thing off of my old 6400+ that could only be put up to 1.4v. Not on the Phenom II 940--I assumed it was the same.

TheMysticEgg 2 years ago
No. I tested it to 800MHz and 2200MHz there was about a difference of 60 points in a 19k+ score in 3d mark06.
Nothing was faster.
I strongly suspect that you either are OCing with overdrive or you have the luckiest chip in the world and that 4.2GHz wasn't stable at all.
What is your board?
m1dget 2 years ago
what is your cpu score? @ 4.0ghz, and if u could, at 3.6ghz :P

I will buy a Phenom II 955...how is it about voltage? and temperatury?
bluefisch200 2 years ago
For 3.8GHz the voltage is at 1.5v... 3.9GHz the voltage is at 1.55v. (3.9GHz is the safe max).
Temps are amazing... very cool for a quad OC that high.
m1dget 2 years ago
would the E8400 go much further then this one? im trying to decide to get a phenom x4 940 or E8400
EnT271 2 years ago
I would go with a 940 if I was you... the price difference the 8400 is not worth it anymore. (~20$)
The 8400 is about 205$ and the 940 is like 225$
m1dget 2 years ago
go with 940, there is around $20 difference in price, but the 940 beats in all settings, quad core, both are 45nm, + 940 HAS MORE CACHE

what overclocker tool is that?
fraction360 2 years ago
It's AMD Overdrive... but seriously don't use it.
It's a really bad software and I don't OC with it.
It was opened so I could show on the video the clock and I use it to check the temps/clacks and that's about it.
m1dget 2 years ago
did AMD just lower the price of this chip? cuz last week the website im building my shopping cart for my computer posted the price as about $230, and today its $190, same as the 920 is

Are you sure that the cpu you own is a Phenom II 940?
I have the feeling that your CPU might be an old phenom 9500.

So your default clock is like 2.2GHz? o_O
m1dget 2 years ago
Yes it's codenamed DENEB
MCSpidah 2 years ago
Ehh...what?
What does it's codename have to do with the fact that your 940 is not supposed to be at that clock by default?
m1dget 2 years ago
lol well i opened up cpu-z and it came up with 11x 230,wont go any further than 11x in the bios.
MCSpidah 2 years ago
AMD cool and quiet.
Go disable it in the BIOS.
m1dget 2 years ago
hey,I've been reading on the internet about how to push the 11x multiplier further,is there any chance you can tell me how you got 20 x?
MCSpidah 2 years ago
Ehh... I have no clue of what you read because the default multiplier is 15.

is that pc watercooled?is that amd overdrive? Is it possiple to oc amd phenom II 940 to 4GHz By coolermaster v8 Any one Ans Me plz
4763843 2 years ago
Seriously?
You can't see the water cooling loop inside the case? :P
4GHz is impossible in any -normal- circumstance.
With the V8 I would guess 3.8GHz max... but that's only if you know how to overclock the chip/board.
No I never use overdrive to overclock because it's a real piece of shit (it really is).
m1dget 2 years ago
Dude what's with the satanic music and 10 cans of coke?
doctaword 2 years ago
It's not satanic... it's just awesome and well for the cans of coke that is the result of a few hours of staying around trying to overclock the cpu :P
m1dget 2 years ago
Do you think i could achieve 4ghz using Air cooling? im using an AC Freezer 64 Pro.
Brentcsi101 2 years ago
4GHz is simply impossible. I haven't seen one people with it stable with settings that won't kill his rig in the long run.
And with your heatsink I would guess 3.6-3.7GHz would be the max before having really high temps.
m1dget 2 years ago
will this cpu take on a Q6600?
PowerMacUser 2 years ago
Absolutely.
m1dget 2 years ago
oh fuck yeah, right now i have a 2.6Ghz athlon x2 and i OC'ed it to 3.0Ghz. runs fine but i would like something alot faster.

luanthegreat1 2 years ago
I wouldn't get an intel, they have a tendency to only outlast the warranty for about a minute. You get a 1 year warranty for a reason (they are pre-overclocked). That's why AMD give a 3 year warranty.
This guy is like me, 10 coke cans around the computer, and all of them empty.
Nice water loop =]
I wanted a watercooling loop, but they're too expensive for a decent one.
hiimchris06 2 years ago
i know nothing about over clocking so where can i go to learn more about it and what is the max you can over clock this processor
nat0000ham 2 years ago
Some awesome Finnish guys got it to 6.5GHz on liquid nitrogen/liquid helium... That was cool. They started pouring it on their heads, and it comes up on the screen "AMD does not recommend you pour liquid helium on your head or your friend's head"... AMD owns.

Hey I got a 920 instead of a 940 and kinda regret not getting the black ed. but oh well...This is my first build and was wondering how high I safely get it oc'd..I got a Phenom II 920 cooled by a Cool Master Hyper z600r with 2 120mm fans connected to it on a M3A79-T Deluxe powered by a Pc Power & Cooling 750w Silencer..
n1k7873 2 years ago
You can easily get 3.5-3.6GHz and even more depending of your ram (good 800MHz for example).
