Wow, really impressive...best version I've seen on youtube! I have a love/hate relationship with Miss Saigon because its beautiful, but like its predecessor Madame Butterfly, it does perpetuate stereotypes of Asians. It was written by Frenchmen with a warped view of both Americans and Vietnamese...read the book about the making of Miss Saigon...some of the stuff they say/do is pretty ignorant/subtly racist.
Nice one! Applause for you guys! This doesn't look like a high school production. Its Broadway already! :-) Though I noticed some dullness. Liveliness on the movements, I guess. The men should be moving more. Good chorus as well. But all in all, I loved it. :-)
As opposed to a professional production where the same stereotypes are played out and a much more offensive level? This stuff happened. It's in the history books and the memories of Vietnam vets. Sad fact, but it's the truth, and that's what the show - amateur and professional - depicts outside the central love story of this piece.
Oh please like a high school text book goes into all the nuances that happened in the Vietnam War. Ever measure how long that section was? I do agree with you jsg. It happened and is part of the history. But the people who continue to write histories and moreover this musical drew upon stereotypes from a previous opera (Madame Butterfly) that shows that Asian woman are disposable for the White lead to have a good life. I hope these kids were given a deeper background in this period.
It's not just Asian women. Misogyny is so pervasive in this world that women don't even realize they're perpetuating it too, not just white men in power. I have no personal knowledge as to whether these kids were educated about the origins of this story from Pierre Loti's Madame Chrysanthemum to Puccini's Madama Butterfly. I assume they're just focused on the pop opera aspects of this show, and the racial issues were ignored because it appears as if most of the cast is Caucasian.
I reckon racial issues and nuances were likely ignored other than those explicitly set forth in the book (BUI DOI, FALL OF SAIGON, Kim'a recitatives). I compare it to white girls cast as Aidas in high school productions of ELTON JOHN'S AIDA who probably don't even think about the significance of skin color, national origin and ethnicity when this type of reverse color-blind casting occurs.

oh how outrageous.. I really didn't think it was possible to appear on this on a real bikini... and i don't think it's very proper or necessary honestly... no offense
good performance, but sound sucks. also, having the girls turning their backs to the audience is one of the greatest no-nos of theatre. otherwise, very nice. it makes me excited to be in miss saigon this summer. :)
i was there at the preformance and if you watch the other videos you will understand why lewis and clark is so proud of all of our theartical productions.
we won countless awards for this show and i was so proud of out high school. we have about 3-4 productions a year and 1 or 2 of those are high budget and the other ones have a lower budget. the actors and actres' are so amazing & the students are too
I thought it was excellent - especially considering it's jsut a high school performance! Cool set, btw! I loved, in particular, Kim, Gigi, Mimi and the Engineer.
also, why was Chris happy in this scene? He's supposed to be depressed and wanting to not be there. He's joking around and smiling with John like he would want to be there - I just think that the characterization was completely wrong.
My high school in Appleton, WI performed this twice (once in March, once in the WI State Teatre Festival in Nov as a showcased musical) and I was just wondering how the hell your school was able to do this! We had to change all of our lyrics because of the content. Was this acceptable in the community? We had 12 performances and everybody loved it, and I'm just curious to see how people reacted to yours. Kim has an amazing voice, but the rest of the vocals are less than immpressive.
yeah, i see what you mean. American people are usually REALLY protective and cautious, or REALLY out there. It's kinda funny b/c you can look at movies today and things that are rated PG now used to be rated G, Pg-13 - PG!
oh! very nice! i have been watching this all over again. kim's voice is really pleasant to hear. even the presentation was not that perfect, still all of you guys performed your best! congratulations! :-)
i go to this high school and the kids at our school are great great amazing actors i hope that the actors do what they are doing now because they are wonderful!!
Can you post more? I've watched all the videos you've posted so far for Miss Saigon, I'd love to see more! What an amazing production. Wish I could've gone to this High School!
@kirstyw14 some aussie school go out full.... but remember you hear way too much keys because they still cant afford the full sound of 20 piece .

That rule generally applies to performers who are speaking or singing.

Amazing sets ... some of the actors are very good, however the male ensemble has NO energy.
Also, why ... WHY ... do high schools feel they have to change the lyrics?!?
PTR80 2 years ago
we really had no choice. we couldn't do the play otherwise. I agree about the male ensemble, we tried again and again to boost their energy.

whats that supposed to mean? (im not trying to accuse u of anything, jw!)

Because of the sexy girls and the language... Not something I'd expect in Puritan America!!
But great that this school just did it ;-)
