What kind of whistle does #3 wear? Is it a Nathan?

The #3 has a Western Pacific 5 chime. Many railroads copied the American Locomotive Company's standard 5 chime whistle, including the WP. This is just a shop made version.

Robert Dollar #3 is my favorite engine at Niles Canyon at the moment. I even favor her over the SP 2472 honestly.

Actually, when the front of the leading car reaches the whistle post, the engineer must start blowing the whistle.

she WAS a wood burner in fact she was reportedly the last wood burner built for use in the united states. Today however she has been converted to burn oil
