It depends on why you're joining. Are you joining it because you can't get a job? Then no. Are you joining it because you don't know what to do with your life? Eh, maybe. Are you joining it to better yourself? Yes. Getting off of drugs? Yes. Want to grow up in the shortest time you could ever believe? Yes.
I just turned 21 years old and I'm about to be headed back to Afghanistan. All my college friends are still talking about class, girls and the weekend. I talk about war.0.o
@bobthebiotitan I've played with little plastic toy soldiers as a youngling, held toy guns until I was 13 (then upgraded to real guns, thanks dad!) and ran "recon" missions when I was 12 with my best friend. I've never considered enlisting in the military until a couple days ago when I figured that all the jobs that exist are shit (and I can't find them either). In your opinion, does that hinder a good reason to enlist?
@blackyblackblack505 None of those things are going to prepare you for being a Marine. In fact, most things in life really can't prepare you. It helps to be mature. It helps to be a person who can stop complaining and just accept the fact that where you are and what you're doing sucks and is stupid.
I helps to not have an attitude, and to have a respect for authority figures. It helps to have confidence and initiative.
If you are joining for a job then don't. If you want to be better. Do it.
@marcusos1111 Would you rather be a target, or a marksman?
Army has infantry out the ASS and they're all trained just barely well enough and they're all hugely expendable. Plus they Army has the lowest physical standards I've ever seen.
yo man i read online that the marines does not have like 3 man rooms for the grunts and that they all have to stay in a thing like at basics, is that true or not?
@RealinAmerica I already answered this one, but here it goes again. It depends on where you go. If you are in a really shitty place, say, 29 palms, then you may have a squad bay like environment. However, the Corps is really good about rooms nowadays. On Lejeune you will be staying in a similar looking room, except with bunk beds, housing four and sometimes up to six marines.
@Flieguyty2 Grunts have things a little different. You may have up to three other people in a room with you. Granted, that's only while you are in the States. Over here in Afghanistan, and in the field you'll be sleeping in tents, mudhuts, and fighting holes.
@Flieguyty2 The only way you will "Get my own room" as infantry is if you attain the rank of E-5, Sergeant, and do not choose to get BAH and live out in town. Even as a Corporal you will still have a roommate, possibly up to three others.
However, as a PFC/LCPL you will be staying in a room with up to six people, at least on Lejeune where overcrowding is presently a problem. They're building barracks to relieve this problem in the next few years.
@nyquildays Not anymore Devil. Due to the Corps downsizing everyone up to Single Sgts are moving back into the barracks. If you have a lease out in town then as soon as it comes up again you have to move back. However, if you own a house or are married then you are scott free.
Seriously though, I find myself having a hard time watching my mouth when I'm around kids. We all do. Shit, I haven't seen a kid under seventeen for over six months.
It's when you finish your schooling and get orders to a permanent deployable (sometimes not) unit. Where you finally start doing the job you were trained for with the people who are going to be with you overseas.
Well, lets see. If you are daycrew then you work from 0600 until 1630. If you are nightcrew you work from 1600 until whenever you finish, usually around 0100 but it can last until 0600.
After those hours you can do whatever you want. Since I work nights, some nights I have eight hours of time to do what I want. Other nights I get back to the barracks and do nothing but sleep. It all depends on the work day.
This is how living off base works for every MOS. There is a certain amount of money allotted to Marines each year called "BAH" or Base Allowance Housing. You get more at higher ranks.
If the BAH for your rank doesn't pay for 2/3rds of the average cost to rent an apartment then you're rank isn't allowed to live in town. Right now only Corporals and above can live in town.
If you are married you automatically get BAH no matter what rank, and you're allowed to live in town. Simple as that.
hey i read the other post's so i know your admin, but do Infantry guys stay in the same barracks also? Probably a stupid question but i was just wondering.
Infantry guys stay in Barracks just like everyone else does. They're similar in nature, but not exactly the same. Don't be disappointed if you spend up to half of your military career in a squad bay as Infantry.
It also depends on what actual MOS you are. If you're a scout you'll be staying in Barracks for sure. If you're an 0311 you'll be in a Barracks a good amount of time. On deployment you'll have squad bays just like everyone else.
so overall how do you like the marine corps? from the dorm rooms your job to social life how do you like it? im female and i hear good things and bad things about it and it freaks me out lol. especially about girls "whoring" themselves out is that true? i would hope it isnt i would hope male marines give respect to female marines do they most of the time?
I enjoy life in the Marine Corps. It has it's ups and downs like anything.
As for the females: Unfortunately what you've heard is true. In the Marine Corp there are four types of females, "Bitches, Dykes, Whores, and Wives"
A good part of the females do sleep around, and being a dominantly male society word gets around quickly. Those girls are dubbed "Barracks Bunnies" and not very many people respect them.
However, if you turn out to be a temperamental bitch you will get respect.
lol i cant believe that if your labled a bitch you get respect from the fellow male marines lol. that sounds crazy to me. personally im not a bitch well i dont think so anyway lol. i can get angry but that's everyone at some point and time. however the whole sleeping around thing ummm yeah no not me lol. so im guessing girls and guys for that matter if they are going to date people they date outside of their branch? although of couse i have know people to marry each other in same branch
A bit of advice on being a girl in the Corp. Never. I repeat. Never EVER. Sleep with or date another Marine. I'm going to tell you that 99 percent of the time it does not work out, and guess what? Then you have complicated feeling between you and someone you have to see EVERYDAY for the next four years.
Not only that, but you *really* don't want to be worrying about him while you're both overseas, or when he is overseas if he is in another unit.
but i mean come on though it's a huge base it's the marine corps there are a lot of people in the barracks. i mean i know it's the few and the proud but is it that small that everyone knows who sleeps or who dates who?
You are going to have to learn to act tough like a guy. That pretty much sums it up. You are going to be a Devil Dog, one of the world's finest fighting forces in the world. When our President needs something blow up he calls you, and you're going to need to act the part.
The female's I've seen that are respected and succeed are the ones who don't act "moody" or "sensitive" like normal girls. They act callous, tough, angry, and do their best to know their job.
Admin is a nice job. It is very cushy. You get all the benefits of actually being a Marine, and don't have to do the crazy shit that others have to.
You'll work inside with air conditioning/heating. You'll be behind a computer for ten hours a day actually working your ass off. As easy as it sounds, the routine will wear on you. Especially when you deploy. You have to be careful to not become complacent.
hey what is the swim qualify in boot camp. i can swim but in not the best at it i mean not with all that stuff they are going to put on me in the pool lol. plus i dont know how to float all that well is it hard to pass it? im only nervous about the running, the swim, and the repelling down the wall never done it before.
If you fail swim qual 4, the lowest qual, you get to retry it a few days later. It is easy. You practice in a three foot deep pool first and then you have to swim 30 meters or so with boots and cammies on. Funny thing about boots, they float, which makes everything easy.
The running? Try to improve before you go to bootcamp. When I was there we didn't *run* all that often, but the endurance you get from it is needed. When I left boot I decreased my run time by 3 minutes.
As for the repelling, with the classes they give you before hand and the way they gear you up it is nearly impossible to fail. That right there is a recurring fact about the Marine Corps. No matter what you are doing, you *WILL* be given the tools to succeed.
The school for admin, if they haven't changed it, on Camp Johnson, just next door to Camp Lejeune and New River Air Station.
You *will* have one roommate, if not two or three. It depends on where you get put. If you get put in an Air Squadron you'll have one roommate. If you get stuck with a tanker unit you might have two or three roommates.

Granted, I don't regret my decision at all. I'm an aviation mechanic on the Osprey. My job is very demanding both physically and mentally. Ever carried a 50 lb toolbox a mile across a flight deck?
We *are* very tight here on the enlisted side. Imagine a place where everyone is a brother, either younger or elder. You might not get along all the time, but in the end of the day everyone has your back.
