i LOVE nirvana. pennyroyal tea was the second song i learned on guitar, cactus by the pixies was the first i learned. but school has turned into one of my favorite nirvana songs and this has gotta be the best live show of them performing it.
For only being 3 guys, Nirvana made a $hitload of noise. I think that's why I was such a big Nirvana fan growing up, it wasn't over-produced stuff, it was musice me and my friends to replicate in the garage. That, and the fact that it sounded REALLY good. And yes, I was in a Nirvana cover band in high school, Rape Me was the first song I ever learned to play.
Whenever I read youtube comments I end up with a feeling of disappointment. everyone seems to be a music historian these days, Just shut your faces and listen to this great song. Who cares if it's grunge, or alternative, or whatever... it's music. If it speaks to you, then just shut your mouth, open your mind, and appreciate it.
AFI's first albums were punk as fuck actually, they made great punk music before they went more mainstream. Answer That and Stay Fashionable was a kick-ass album.
if u actually know anything about nirvana then u should know they never defined their music as "grunge" whatever that is, go see for yourself "little kiddie"
I think they did some vocal editing too. I love Nirvana and stuff, but Kurt usually sings very sloppily and out of tune live. I think they edited it a bit to make it more consumer friendly.

Nirvana never gave a shit about going mainstream or not. No one thought the album was gonna be so big. The reason their so good is cause its only 3 guys putting out that much sound. Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden(my favorite) are all great FUCKING BANDS. They all help put grunge on the map one way or another. I dont give a fuck about Alice in Chains. Mudhoney, Green River and the Melvins were like the precursors to what become grunge. Those guys are good too.
I was at Reading '92. Wasn't standing near the front for Nirvana, but from my position the sound was weedy & washed out & I got bored watching them. People nearer the stage thought they sounded great, but I was really disappointed. Melvins & Nick Cave were highlights for me.
I agree with you, Nevermind had a few decent songs, but Bleach was perfect. And Smells like Teen Spirit sucks. I'd say School, or You Know You're Right are their best.
WOW. What an ass-kicking song. It's nice to hear Cobain's grungy lead on this--very sparse in notes but powerful. Grohl (sp?) plays a mean f%#&ing drum! To think that he was "just" a drummer with Nirvana, compared to the success he's had as a frontman, says volumes about Kurt Cobain and his songwriting.
thats what weve been trying to tell this douche but he prefers to stick with his top 40.. were not trying to say nirvana was the only one to make alt and grunge popular.. a large contributor tho.
You cant sit there and tell me that Nirvana wasnt an influential band because they didnt do so great on the charts. the fuckin jonas brothers can do so well but there still not gonna get me to jump out my chair and dance like a son of a bitch like i do to nirvana!
I guess only I see the irony in half the people posting here declaring Nirvana the most influential band of the 90's, and the other half posting about how people didn't 'get' Nirvana.
Neanon, Nirvana became popular and successful since the 14th of september 1991, when Nevermind was released. Kurt's death made them idols, but if they didn't create good music they couldn't be considered as a magnificent group. They did a lot for music, sure.
Well, it definitely is true that the premature death of Kurt in odd circumstances has made Nirvana more renown, but I don't think that Nirvanas music is overrated at all. I respect if you personally don't like their music, everyone has the right to have their own musical tastes, but you can't deny the fact that they have influenced so many people around the world. That doesn't happen for nothing and you should respect that, even if you don't like their music at all.
tbh neaon your just a shit individual for thinking someone commiting suicide makes them overrated when there gone. People love nirvana because of there music, and its nothing but sad to now that they we never do anything more because of kurts death, there certainly not overated
It's amazing how annoyingly ignorant you are. Popular? Sure, but not overrated. What the hell does Kurt killing himself have to do with how popular or over rated they are?
lol your'e a dumbass. You cannot argue against the fact that lead singers of band dying/killing themselves does anything but make the band more popular. All the little fanbois jump on the bandwagon saying how much they loved them, and the corporations quickly spit out a dozen albums to fill the crushing demand.
Look at Sublime, Blind Melon, Tupac, Biggie, Aaliyah, etc. All are far overrated from where they were before they died.
That makes no sense though, you think if the Jonas Brothers' jet blew up they would be any more popular in the coming years? I bet people would say "Oh, what a tragedy" and in 5 years a new pop icon would appear for mindless people to worship.
Those artists you mentioned, and you could have said the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, Pink Floyd etc etc, were good musicians in their own right, their deaths are a tragedy because we have less of their great music. Be respectful.
The problem with your argument is that the artists you list actually had a significant, successful career before their deaths. Nirvana had, what? 1 hit off of Nevermind, no hits off of In Utero, disappointing record sales, and flash in the pan talk. Then Cobain offs himself and all of a sudden they are "the most influential band of the 90's", cmon. Even if you're a hardcore fanboy you can be honest about this.
"Nevermind became Nirvana's first number one album on January 11, 1992, replacing Michael Jackson at the top of the Billboard charts. By this time, Nevermind was selling approximately 300,000 copies a week.[42] "Come As You Are" was finally released as the second single in March 1992; it peaked at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.[43] Two more singles, "Lithium" and "In Bloom", were released from the album."
Did you knew cassette tapes? yes, we used to copy them too, anyway... influence it's not measured in record sales. You should be listening Jonas brother instead of watching this damn video.
You suffer from selective reading, where by you only extract information pertinent to your own arguments rather than reading the article as a whole. "Nevermind was selling approximately 300,000 copies a week." It went platinum in a month. :/
Vanilla Ice didn't off himself, although he probably should have, and that was your original argument, that Nirvana was only popular after Kurt's death, which simply is not true. That's my point.
I never said that Nirvana was only popular after Kurt's death, if you learn how to read. I said their popularity and perceived influence skyrocketed after his death (i.e. overrated). Those are two separate concepts (take a reading class!)
Not everyone means what you do when they say overrated. I thought you meant Nirvana was not as good a band as they actually were, not that people give them more credit for being influential then they deserve. That might actually be true. As you said alt-rocks rise in popularity had as much to do with PJ, STP, Radiohead etc.
However, I guarantee Nirvana, Sublime, Blind Melon and many other bands would have successfully earned the popularity they received had they gotten more of a chance.
everybody in the world should know they are not great
they are one hit losers
kurt cobain was depprese fag that wanted attention

Lulz, are you kidding me? Nirvana had like 4 hits off Nevermind and at least 2 off of In Utero, (Rape Me and Heart Shaped Box).
You really know nothing, do you? Nirvana popularized alternative music and brought it out of the specialty section of record shops, for better or for worse...What's on the radio now? Oh yeah! ALTERNATIVE MUSIC. /end
LOL! You have no clue at all. Go ahead, pull up the Billboard top 40 for that time period and find 6 different Nirvana songs on it. Seriously, go ahead.
As for popularizing alternative music.. yeah. It was JUST nirvana. I'm sure Pearl Jam, STP, Soundgarden etc had NOTHING to do with it.
Did I say it was was just Nirvana? Why don't YOU read you stupid troll.
Nirvana was the first MAJOR chart-topping alt band therefore they are given the title of popularizing alternative music. Soundgarden and Pearl Jam helped out...Although Soundgarden is more of just a weird metal band than grunge/alt.
Lol Which sold better on initial release? Nevermind. Ten sales started out slow then rose after Nevermind came out and when the grunge era started to take hold.
Hmmm....Ten became popular after Nirvana's breakaway success...I think any further arguing on the topic will just solidify Dan's arguement.
Regardless Ten did in fact sell better than Nevermind and eclipsed its sales in 1993. Both are great albums.
without nevermind we wouldnt have even been broken into grunge (yet) haha who knows ten might not have even gotten big at all without nirvana. good points rex
Speak for yourself, there were those of us who were well aware of bands like Soundgarden, Malfunkshun, Green River, Mudhoney, and the Melvins. We did not need Nevermind and its heavy rotation on Mtv to serve as a signal that there was good music being made in the Northwest. More importantly, Nirvana were standing on the shoulders of many bands that came before them.
kurt cobain is a legend, your a fucking nobody neaonbhb, shut up loser!!! nirvana was easily one of the best groups of the 90s!!! and they were VERY important for rock in the 90s, actually music in general!
I agree with the Them Crooked Vultures. Sounds great and JPJ is God. Just really disappointed in the direction of the Foos material. After the amazing first album Grohl put together...the stuff is just hollow to me.
I have this on bootleg tape and the Vocal was way more overpowering on the original..I appriciate the twicking done on the Instuments but there was no need to lower the vocal track.
Anyways',..I still luved it and await the Official release.

kritikkal 2 years ago
@kritikkal have u heard his new band with Josh Homme and John Paul Jones? they sound pretty good. them crooked vultures
MacGruber33 2 years ago
I agree with the Them Crooked Vultures. Sounds great and JPJ is God. Just really disappointed in the direction of the Foos material. After the amazing first album Grohl put together...the stuff is just hollow to me.

I have this on bootleg tape and the Vocal was way more overpowering on the original..I appriciate the twicking done on the Instuments but there was no need to lower the vocal track.
Anyways',..I still luved it and await the Official release.

prefer CD+DVD because only seeing a DVD is not enough. listen to CD and see the booklet will fill you more.
