If you think metal can't have hardcore influences at all, then you'd be correct in saying that metalcore, deathcore, and grindcore aren't metal. I'm on the fence about it, though. Metalcore bands like Miss May I don't belong in metal, but I think bands like August Burns Red fits in perfectly with progressive metal acts.

I tend to think of metalcore as metal with hardcore punk influences, not the other way around.
