I've probably left 5 comments on this video already, but she is amazing! I mean people don't realize that the kind of beauty in people and in words is almost lost, like DAMN!!! I wish I could sit my enitre high school down and make them watch this, hoping they'd feel what I felt
I know most people will igonre this, but to anyone who loves poetry and enjoys watching spoken word poetry please check out my poem entitled "Death sentence" .. My name is Vincente "SubVersive" Perez. I'm an aspiring poet and i feel my passion will speak to many people as long as they give it a chance. If you decide to look me up i appreciate your time and effort. Thank you - SubVersive
This was heavy....."...step on up to the auction block. Bend ova. Touch ya toes. Son show ya teeth. Lift her titties. Examine his balls. It damn near sound like a hip hop song..." #BOOM
@mankissingbird I wasn't talking about wonder and beauty....Im talking about this coming from nothing.....no way you can tell me this comes from a random happening
Trace the artist's history, experience and intentions. That will explain the roots of work like this.
There is nothing random about poetry. It takes an understanding of language, observation and metaphor.
That doesn't mean everything was designed by a god. Talent, evolution, knowledge - none of them are random. It is a combination of growth and conscious and our ability to express our experience of it.
@mankissingbird Mmmm....I disagree yo. Without a god, everything is random. When I say random I mean, without reference to a prior arrangement, pattern, or purpose. Yes, there is a pattern to the cosmos but where did that pattern come from. Even HER experiences, why did she have those experiences? RANDOM, because the genesis of it all is not defined. What are your thoughts on that argument (if you don't mind)???
Man did yall catch some of the things she was saying??? Beautiful woman..Just seen her last week..beautiful work, beautiful pieces, beautiful peace, beautiful spirit. Stay Blessed!
I've just discovered Sunni Patterson tonight and have already watched a dozen of her videos.. That woman is so REAL! You can feel that she's strong and wise ..
more people need to be into poetry i love rap but the feeling thats into this.. like wow where did this come from ima poet and i couldnt come up with that.. i have never had nobody to describe death in a light where its positive.. thank u Ms. patterson.. when it my time to go ill feel good about it cause i did right by ppl even when wrong so when i see death i can look him the face and say i made it
Every time I listen to this I get chills. Speaks about reality & how life really is. She's one of my favorite poets! One day, I hope to touch people like she does! (:
In the beginning she is basically saying "I am descended from sinners" (I'm from a stock that pitch cocktail bombs and hand grenades)
Then she says, "I am a sinner" (I'm a N**** turning the gun on the national guards)
Because the price of sin is death - she says death isn't always this good; meaning sins are not always this tame (even though it's not). Sin (Death) gets worse. Then she elaborates on some of the dark sins of the world "It's a man 43 man..."
But ultimately, based on the bible, she concluded, death does not matter. What matters is what side we are on: Lucifer's or God's. The bible teaches that death is but a sleep unto the second coming of Christ; the resurrection. Hence, she says it doesn’t matter because if we choose God, we will live eternally.
When she says "they can't afford the truth to leak, she refers to the bible truth". Hence, in her reply to them, she says "Blessed are the meek...theirs is the kingdom" of heaven.
When she talks about slavery, she means how we are trapped in this dark world; it's not about race. From the president to the convict, "From the roof top to the cell block", everyone is a slave to this world; a slave to sin - the price of which is death.
@brionnakennedy This was written after Hurricane Katrina, many people had a less than pleased reaction to the way President Bush reacted to the tragedy. This poem relates alot to slavery or the repressive moments of our countries saddest historical moments, and again relates the sentiment which many felt after the Hurricane that the government didn't react fast enough in the aid of those who lived in New Orleans, I mean they are still making efforts to rebuild now, so what does that tell you....
@brionnakennedy There poem ends with hope.... She makes it clear that after all the repression, slavery, and angst between "races" we will all find peace one day... and will one day be able to look back at what "we made it" through as a people.
@brionnakennedy The poem ends with hope.... She makes it clear that after all the repression, slavery, and angst between "races" we will all find peace one day... and will one day be able to look back at what "we made it" through as a people.
@finevirgo07 i don't really get the just of it ??? like what is it shes trying 2 covey and what does she mean when she says "Death ain't always this good"
@brionnakennedy I think when she says "Death ain't always this good", she is using it as a form of sarcasm. She mentions two kinds of death, physical and spiritual, throughout the poem. And again this relates back to slavery, you can't take it too literally. Did my prior posts not sum it up for you?
@brionnakennedy it means back in those days there were much worse ways to die then to be poisoned, like some of the ways that slaves lost their lives, it was a bit sarcastic
left in tears.. speechless. POWERFUL! This is what I am made of! My veins run deep with the pain of those that came before me. And I am Proud of it BLACK IS BEAUTY thats what i've been taught!
I think she is amazing, and angelic what a light to the world. But one thing you all must understand and Sunni if you get this: SLAVERY IS NOT JUST BLACK read the RED AMENDMENT LB BORK, White Elitist are not common people. Watch Maffa21 and go to the history of Oregon and eugenics......A breed of evil.......please, dont make this a black thing or we all will be destroyed
This poem is so encouraging. I love how she is bringing the REAL part of life to the table that people dont talk about. The message she is basically saying is that life is HARD and sometimes terrible life changing things are going to happen. REAL Life & death isnt always pretty, but what matters is that we make it through and dont let it change our spirit & heart into bad just because bad situations. To anyone who goes thru hard times/life in general and still remains strong; WE MADE IT!

That was a very powerful poem, i like how her tone and emotional delivery match the tone of the vivid imagery she uses. Her words take the audience on a dark journey through tragic moments in black history from the the horrors of Jim Crow South to the tragedy of police brutality today, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Malcom X the death and imprisonment of black revolutionaries and the inhumanity of the slave trade....our freedom was paid for with the blood of our ancestors
Here we go again useing the N word, if black people as a race detest this word so much, then why help keep it alive by useing it period, no matter what the occassion maybe, we can help make it obselete by first starting at home by banning it.

the answer to what this poem is about can be found in the poem itself. it asks the question in the last stanza, why do we die? Sunni Patterson answers, "it's so we might be courageous in the face of it".

In the poem Death = Sin at some points
In the beginning she is basically saying "I am descended from sinners" (I'm from a stock that pitch cocktail bombs and hand grenades)
Then she says, "I am a sinner" (I'm a N**** turning the gun on the national guards)
Because the price of sin is death - she says death isn't always this good; meaning sins are not always this tame (even though it's not). Sin (Death) gets worse. Then she elaborates on some of the dark sins of the world "It's a man 43 man..."

A lot of people misunderstand this piece of spoken word.
~You have to understand the bible to understand some of it~
When she talks about death, she refers to both the spiritual and physical death.
She uses this reference to emphasize the difficulties and darkness of life; she calls it 'hell'.
