It absolutely makes no sense why ASUS designed the MB with a 'hidden' 2GB memory stick UNDER the keyboard. The max system memory is 16GB. The maximum any end user can install "normally" is 12GB.
This video is outstanding but to the amateur, too daunting to remove that keyboard to get down into and replace the 2GB strip with a 4GB.
If anyone knows of a workaround, please email lgray.carter@gmail.com!!
I'm going to do this soon with my laptop. Question though: in order to clean the heatsinks do I have to soak them in rubbing alcohol? And swab the gpu?
So i was watching a BIOTech Forums vid, and when they took apart their g73 jw, they mentioned that the keyboard would have to be taken to get repaired and get more tape.....is there a way for me to take apart my laptop WITHOUT having to go to a tech to get anything repaired? Is your video it?
@Kaiser0119 Don't worry, I removed a few keyboard and I never broke any. It's hard to remove, take your time, it could take up to 15 minutes. I guess BTO just did it quickly and damaged it. Pull it gently, do not rip it off and try to pull where you can feel the tape.

@Blackluc mine makes the same noise, i have cleaned mine too, took out palmrest etc... still makes the same noise, im thinking of just replacing it but dont know where to buy from. any ideas?
Ah crap, so much to do in order to change the freaking paste, I had a G50, and it was so much easier :( . It sucks that this is needed for a dual fan machine :(
Have only one concern with this process. Since the Keyboard is secured with double sided tape, does it gets damaged when you try to pull it out? what is the safest way to remove it?
@raznag2001 I would say taking your time is the key. Be really careful and do not make use of strong force. Try to gently pull at the top and then try to get your fingers near the middle, so you won't bend your keyboard by pulling only on top.. I suck at explaining lol
Thanks for the video, but I think ASUS failed with this model. There are just so many G73JH owners out there experiencing so many problems. A laptop shouldn't need this kind of maintenance within its warranty period. The amount of G73JH owners out there who I've "met" online who are dealing with terrible performance (freezing, crashing, and audio issues) is huge. This model was a complete disaster and ASUS should've done a recall and refunded the customers.
@krych3k So true... I'm dealing with it. And I'm using it for school. If I say to someone that I have laptopproblems at school, next thing they ask is: "Do you own an asus?" :s
I'm seeing a lot of people mention cleaning of the vents but I have not seen a single person mention this... Before applying new thermal paste clean the old stuff off of the 2 surfaces making contact. Also before re-attaching the heatsink make sure it's clean and not scratched up or you may need to sand/polish it before putting it back on, and be careful to not over tighten the heatsink and crush the CPU/GPU.
Hm....didn't think that repasting/accesing the CPU in the G73 is this hard....do you think a guy who built his own Desktop PC can do that? Cuz i dont want to destroy a 1600€ machine^^
@TheEricCartmenez I klnow a lot of people that would build desktops without any problems but that would break a laptop in 40 seconds. I can make a desktop with my eyes closed but a laptop I have to take my time and be really careful. The first time I do a laptop I read a bit about it (like in this case you have to know about the keyboard and the speaker plug before doing this!) and I make sure of having every screws. With a laptop if you forget something you have to start all over again.
I want to repaste my gpu and cpu because in last moth my laptop was overheating over 99 grades celcius in both (cpu and gpu). I was reading in other sites and told me that clean fan is enough to solve this problem. Can you give me advice? Its better repasting or cleaning fans? How brand of paste do you recommend?
@dualkev The first thing to do is the clean your vents. I used to clean my vents once every 2 weeks (I do not anymore because I need a new can of air). An other thing too is the temperature, like here right now it's over 30C and it influences A LOT my laptop, so even if I feel sad when I look at my temps, I know it's probably due to summer since they were way better before summer. But, 99C is really high, clean and if it's still hot go for a repaste. I recommend IC Diamond 7.
Nice video. I have an Asus g73jh and my brother does also. I am on the west coast and my bro is on he east coast. If it wasn't for the overheating issue I would say these laptops are awesome. Now my laptop is dieing on games like Starcraft 2. Windows event viewer is saying the GPU is overheating and forces a computer shut down. This overheating cannot be a coincidence since my bro on the east coast has the same issue. The consensus is the thermal past on the GPU is cheap crap from factory
Is it true it can take up to 2 months for asus to RMA? MY GPU temps are CRAZY: 98 - 101 Celsius (200+ Fahrenheit). It's my only computer right now (typing on it), and there's no way I can send it off for repair; but I'm also worried that if I get it privately done they might break something. It's becoming a major issue, because I black screen almost every day doing 3d work or even light gaming. What do you recommend? :(
@Heinekenpvd Yes, I was reaching 104C after 3 minutes with furmark (didn't go further, seeing it would reach 110C and shutdown) and now It's maxed at 85C after 10 minutes of furmark.
@Blackluc That a nice improvement. Everybody experiences over heating problem on G73's. I hope this model will never be like junk HP's. Asus is good brand but after many complains about this model, I start to think different about G73. I've never work on G73 so far. My opinion Toshiba X505 does great job when you play on high setting about 1-2 hours. I like the body of G73. It's almost perfect but need 1 more year to prove it's strength in the market.
@Heinekenpvd 1. "Like this" doesn't mean anything, be precise
2. I don't have any anti-static strap, but I know I need one
3. My thermal paste was correctly applied and used IC Diamond 7
4. I cleaned 100% of my laptop
5. This is the same thing recommended by other people that are certified
The laptops I repair are 100% working better than before with nothing broke and I do it for free. And lol at school they don't even give us working anti-static straps....
@Blackluc This is 1.5K Laptop and a lot of ppl who are watching this video will fallow all your steps. I'm not saying your steps are wrong but how you done your job is wrong. I deassamble/fix 10-15 laptops every day and believe me ,if I part out any laptop like you, my manager will kick my ass next day lol . I think your laptop will generate more heat in long term because of poor assembly. I respect your job by the way.
@Heinekenpvd That video was my first time with the G73... Maybe if I was doing 10-15 per day things would be different :P And the video was edited, so we can't really see 100% of the thing. And lol, there isn't 40 ways of doing it.. Well I'm doing it the same wa BTO tech does, and multiple people on notebookreview does
@Blackluc Yea you totally right. I own Qosmio X505 and never change the paste. Silver or aluminium based compounds are usually good for 2-3 years. I just recently serviced one Alienware and the thermal compound on GPU became like just silver sheet. It means good manufacturer product and pure silver. That's a nice laptop and video. How is your laptop right now by the way? Is it cool enough as you expected?
@Heinekenpvd While I appreciate that you feel constructive criticism is your message, there is a large multitude of people who have taken these steps, (myself included) with excellent results. You're "10-15" laptops a day means nothing as this is a guide specific to THIS laptop, the G-73. Perhaps even a bit of research before you post will save you looking this pretentious online.
In 99 out of 100 cases repasting is useless. I had 55 C in idle, 90 C in load. I repasted it and now I have 54 in idle, 88 in load. It is not worth the effort....
@MrEirey I think you mean in 99 out of 100 cases IT IS NOT useless... You are just unlucky/did it wrong/bad paste/normal with your gpu I see lots and lots and lots and lots..... (well, lots) of people repasting when they have high temps and repasting helps it A LOT. The JH's thermal paste is bad.... You have to be lucky to buy one with a good paste. But it depends on your gpu... Some have higher temps than others, good paste or not.
@MrEirey Idle was 67C-70C and furmark burn-in was getting me 104C in 3 minutes, before repaste. Now I have arround 57C idle (hard to say right now, it's summer and the ambient temperature influences it a lot) and I pretty much max 84C-85C in load now
@Blackluc Before repasting I had 90 C max in load (summer time). After repasting I have 86-87 C. I dont think that 3 degrees worth the effort. That is what I was trying to say.
@MrEirey Wait until your GPU starts hitting 100C+. That 3-degree change you're calling worthless is suddenly going to be a 15-degree change you will beg for when the time comes. My GPU maxes out at 110C, throttles back and goes down to 100C (horrible FPS during this time) throttles back up and hits 110C (sometimes even 112-115C). I'll try repasting later today to see how much cooler it can get. Been using an electric fan pointed at the laptop (G50) which the bottom cover off to be able to play
@sandinsx Bullshit. My maximum load temp is 87 C. I ran Furmark for 2 hours. 87 - maximum. My previous temps without repasting was 90 C maximum (never higher!) Read carefully first, so you don't have to write silly posts.
@MrEirey Oh, pardon me. What I meant to say was, wait for the time your stock thermal paste gets dry/stops transmitting heat effectively. I'm guessing you didn't get a huge decrease in temps because your thermal paste still works well enough and the maximum load temp you're getting is really your operating temperature. I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work for you. Worked for a lot of people. Actually you're the only person I've encountered that it didn't work with.
You are awesome man computer was on fire and the fan sounded like there was an airplane in the room, CPU was at 80 C and GPU 93 C. I repasted them and now they run 30 C lower on both. RUNS AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER THAN WHEN I GOT IT. However my speakers don't work because I pulled the connector off of the motherboard, I reattached it but it doesn't work. Is there anything I can do or am I screwed?
@manofadventure2000 Oh crap... I'm not sure how to fix that :S I'll check a bit about it and tell you if I get anything, but it's something serious. Sorry to hear about it but grats for your temps!
another issue. My asus is not starting.i was plaing a game.then i shut down and when i try to start it i have black screen. All blue lights are on,i can opened cd rom but screen is not starting anymore.Any idea?
@makumba011 I had that problem once. I removed my hard drives and then it was turning on... So I just went in my BIOS and did "reset to default settings". I would suggest you trying to remove your RAM, HDDs, etc... Just to test your stuff.
@makumba011 Probably not. In the JH it's impossible because it's an ATI card, but if in the JW and SW the bios and voltage is correct, it could work, but wouldn't work 100% perfectly. I wouldn't count on it.

GPU temp is 60c
GPU temp1 = 56c
GPU temp2 = 60c
GPU temp3 = 55c (what does all of this means? :S )
btw I have not updated my Vbios since I bought the laptop nearly a year ago, could it cause more heat?
thx

@LoboLoko007 Your temps are fine :)

@Blackluc Tell me your idle and load temps.
MrEirey 8 months ago
@MrEirey Idle was 67C-70C and furmark burn-in was getting me 104C in 3 minutes, before repaste. Now I have arround 57C idle (hard to say right now, it's summer and the ambient temperature influences it a lot) and I pretty much max 84C-85C in load now
Blackluc 8 months ago
@Blackluc Before repasting I had 90 C max in load (summer time). After repasting I have 86-87 C. I dont think that 3 degrees worth the effort. That is what I was trying to say.
MrEirey 8 months ago
@MrEirey And what I was trying to say is that in most cases it is worth it... :) Just not yours

Is there anything I can do or am I screwed?
manofadventure2000 8 months ago
@manofadventure2000 Oh crap... I'm not sure how to fix that :S I'll check a bit about it and tell you if I get anything, but it's something serious. Sorry to hear about it but grats for your temps!

another issue. My asus is not starting.i was plaing a game.then i shut down and when i try to start it i have black screen. All blue lights are on,i can opened cd rom but screen is not starting anymore.Any idea?
makumba011 9 months ago
@makumba011 I had that problem once. I removed my hard drives and then it was turning on... So I just went in my BIOS and did "reset to default settings". I would suggest you trying to remove your RAM, HDDs, etc... Just to test your stuff.

It is possible to replace this graphic card with geforce 560m? looks like this one is mxm 3.0
makumba011 9 months ago
@makumba011 Probably not. In the JH it's impossible because it's an ATI card, but if in the JW and SW the bios and voltage is correct, it could work, but wouldn't work 100% perfectly. I wouldn't count on it.
