Omg. The guy in the German band called Jud's Gallery is actually not playing his solo but uses the solo notes from Garry's song....OMG....THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE because these guys never wrote the notes in such melody in 1972 (I have the demo session). This is freakin' ridiculous!!!!!!!!!

It is very messed up....and I believe because of this, the judge should not have agreed on any of this...because they both sound different....

@dezman160 With all due respect, if you hear Still Got the Blues and the original song, the similarity is still there - the initial notes of the main riff just ARE almost identical, if not completely. Different speed, but it's there. Thast still doesn't mean Gary stole it. Great minds think alike, plus with the limited scale it's just bound to happen over and over again that two people come up with the same melody. Still Got the Blues still is and will remain a masterpiece. <3

That is disgusting. The original bears a resemblence to Still got the blues only in terms of the basic (very common) classical chord structure. The fact that these talentless idiots made so much money due to a court ruling by a judge with no knowledge of music resulted in one of the finest guitarists the world has ever seen being stripped of his dignity and having a suffering a great deal of pain. What I have just seen in that live version is an insult, the band should pay back all the money.

This chord progression is as old as Adam. The notes are somewhat similar but not the same, as is with the timing, if you listen to Jud Gallery's album it is even less similar. The authenticity of this video of JG is in doubt. All factors put together a serious court of law wouldn't have made such a judgment. The judge was definitely playing for the home side.

I heard the original 1974 "Nordrach" here on YT and its very different except for small parts that are similar. They reminded me slightly of Manuel Gottsching's Ashra. Gary Moore's song is in no way plagarised version. Whats being played here is in fact a plagarism of Gary Moore's "still got the Blues" without lyrics. The judges unjust ruling should be overturned.

But the point is: the ORIGINAL song, which should be posted here (!), has nothing to do with Still got the Blues, in recent performances by the German band of their song, it has been played to sound like Gary's Still got the blues, and NOT sound like its original version! Ha! Dude!! The Nordrach video shown here is a performance from 2009. The guitarist is playing it SO THAT IT SOUNDS like Still Got the Blues!! Lame. The original recorded in 1974 uses a different melody line on a lower octave.

Universally in plagiarism, you need three "stolen" components: 1. groove, 2. melody, and 3. harmony.

Nordrach definitely fails the groove component: it uses accentuated bass on both up and down beats, drums heavily “pronouncing” the melody, and aggressive keyboard chording to contrast the melody and create tension. SGTB, on the other hand, uses an arpeggiated guitar as the main rhythmic instrument to give the harmonic “colour” and “pave the way” for the melody.

The bass stays “low” accentuating only downbeats and simply highlighting the tonal centre (A minor 98% of the song). Drums are simple as it gets, just highlighting the time signature (6/8. Definitely different from Nordrach which is more like 12/8). Not to mention SGTB’s tempo is like 25 bps slower.

Yes, melody and harmony are very similar in both, I’ll give that. BUT, this chordal structure is extremely standard (from old jazz), in fact so standard that it has a name: I-IV-VII-III-VI-II-V-I. I’ll skip the theory here but let’s just say that on such an uber-basic, common standard progression that Jud’s Gallery didn’t invent by any means, you only have a few notes (like only 3 notes per chord!) to attain the highly melodic “sad” effect that Gary wanted to give.

Contrary to Germany, in Canada, USA and the U.K. for there to be plagiarism, it must be proven by the plagiarizee on a balance of probabilities that the plagiarizer had access to the plagiarized material.. HIGHLY UNLIKELY in this case.

Lastly there’s the moral question. If that is truly plagiarism, it’s scary! Because there are tons of songs out there that are just as similar to each other as those two (I could give examples if you want). You don’t see lawsuits flying around, thank God! This Juds Gallery version shown here was NOT played in 1974!! It's obviously pretty recent. The original "Nordach" was recorded in 1974. IN THIS VIDEO, the guitarist is playing to sound VERY CLOSE to "Still Got the Blues", it It doesn't sound the same in the original version.

If I'd heard the original "Nordach" just by itself, I MIGHT think there's similarity w/ SGTB but not enough to call it plagiarism (I've played guitar for 13 years, my ears would know!)
