There is no "game over" screen in FF6. Fall in battle & the it fades to black, your character kneels, you hear sad music, then you're sent back to your last save game with one difference: you keep all the levels you've gained since then.
Back in the 1990's, after Chrono Trigger came out, I was wishing for New Game Plus in FF6... and realized I could have my own version of it one day when I was reading the manual. I told Thwyter that day and he was the one who pulled it off first.
Then you didn't see my SNES version of it. On the GBA I utilized the quick save feature to store my progress since it does not actually save the game, but rather the state.
Congrats on achieving this again, before me again. I'll eventually make good on the idea I came up with, heh. Back on SNES, I failed at around level 80 when Celes got hit with insta-death by herself, and currently I'm going for a low-evel game. I'll catch up though! At least I'm still ahead in PSO >_>
I don't get it, how did you get to level 99?

*blinks twice* Ok, never had that happen before on the SNES. How in the name of Primus did you do that?
