Because as Aussies we're used to winning medals in swimming, cycling, rowing, hockey etc. But track and field athletes winning medals for us are a very rare thing. Cathy was a World and Commonwealth Champ, and had come in with a Silver at Atlanta. She had huge expectations on her for this race, we all felt she deserved this medal, and to do it in front of her home crowd made it even more special. On top of that she is a very humble and likeable personality, which made her even more loved in Aus

Fair enough it was a good race... I still dont understand why she lit the Olympic cauldron which was and is normally an honor left for those who had achieved great heights in their careers previously. At the time she had only won gold in the Commonwealth Games in a single event. It kinda cheapened the whole thing IMO... we have way more deserving athletes.

Absolutely, my wife is such and reminds me a lot of Cathy Freeman. I have been extremely Blessed and fortunate over the past 11 years to have been married to such a wonderful woman. Praise the Lord our God.

and I was like "She's from MACKAY!?" (which is relatively smallish)

i remember this race! im from mexico and im proud of it my grandma was mexican indian(native) and grand pa came from spain, i know how it feels for some creeps come to your land and put down your people or the ones that where there before (natives) i feel so sorry for the Aborigine people and what happen to them, this was a great moment for them, and any body that is human and can realate with stuff like that, being consider some thing lower cause you have a diffrent color of skin is not cool.

look frank the term 'aboriginal' is not derogatory, it comes from latin meaning 'from origin' or original inhabitant hence indigenous. By calling her aboriginal we are calling her indigenous. True what you said that every austalian, excluding indigenous people are immigrants. However, indigenous australians migrated 60,000 + years ago. yes, but only until lately this term was a common noun, the name given to any group of original inhabitants. therefore, all modern people are descendants of aboriginal people. perhaps the aboriginal people of australia were given the proper noun of Aboriginal was because they were not one particular group with one language, one custom rather made up of over several hundred. the name could be derogatory as it wasnt their original collective name and it has been used in such a fashion by whites.

I am a Nyoongar, there are Wongi, Wiradjeri, Nunga, etc. We are no more generic than European or Asian or African. These names can unveil a kaleidoscope of diversity. Peace.

Never said it was the term that Indigenous Australians use as an endonym....thanks for the rundown on the terms...wasn't necessary :) and yes European, Asian and African are collective terms for the ethnic groups and nationalities that occupy those regions...the same as Aboriginal refers collectively to the Nyoongar, Wongi, Wiradjuri, Nunga, Narrunga, Eora, Pitjatjinjatjara peoples...you get the idea. freeman was great but hey she ran only one time a sub49', and wasn't as regular as sanya richards is now, and didn't dominate the 400m(except that year!)but still that race was wonderful with her homecrowd and everthing!!!!!!!!!(I know she won the worlds in 97 and 99 but not with impressive times)

Excuse me. I know you wrote this two years ago and Guevara retired before Beijing, but still, she broke the 49 sec barrier and she's the ninth fastest ever, she was World Champion, she was 1 meter behind Williams in Athens for silver, she's the woman with more indiviual medals (3) in World Champs history and had a 26 or so winning streak that lasted from 2001 to 2003 and you say she wasnt good enough. Come on !!!

I totally agree with you. I remember watching all the advance, pre-race coverage of this event for weeks before it even happened, and it seemed the entire universe had determined Cathy would win to the point it was a given. Then she actually had to take to the track, in front of her fellow Aussies, and next to the best runners on planet earth. Can you imagine? She must have had ice water in her veins that day. Too cool.
