  • I remember listening to this as a kid. My father has the original 78 rpm records that my grandmother bought brand new. Sounds awesome. Thank you.

  • I love this song it's in the movie o 'brother where art thou'

  • @leonrrhayes i fucking hope not cause this version fucking sucks

  • @leonrrhayes That's the Harry McClintock version actually.

  • Jack Tripper Sr.

  • At 1:44 it should be "There's a lake of stew And whiskey too You can paddle all Around in a big canoe On the big rock candy mountain"

  • Why the performer of this tune decided to omit some of the original lyrics is unclear. The redacted passage is: “On, The Big Rock Candy Mountain, Girls never wear a thing. An’ to your surprise, when you wake up, you’ll find a lipstick ring. The pharmacies’ backdoors don’t lock, and syringes grow on trees. There’s opium goo, and cocaine too; Those things occur in nature, in case yuh didn’t knew, on The Big Rock Candy Mountain.”
  • @neatoauctions Yeah man!!!! ....the pharmacie`s backdoors don`t lock... I FEEL YA!!! ;-)

  • I didn't see that anyone mentioned "Haywire Mac" Harry McClintock. Chief King hobo of the Northern Pacific Railway, according to Utah Phillips. Haywire Mac was a well known busker (hobo singer) and gets the credit for the hobo version (with the cigarette trees etc.) and it's his version in the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou".

Recording Album on Folkways Records FD 5272.

    I had a little red record when I was 4 or 5 (1951) - don't remember which version.....but I'm a non smoker ....so.....

  • The music doesn't start until 0:32!

  • Why should cig trees be not for kids? Kids understand that a hobo likes his smoke, even though they shouldn't smoke themselves. Kids understand a lot more than we think. We need not protect them from reality. They developed phantasy to make reality more bearable.

  • oh yes, much better, we have to politically-correctesize like everything - keep with the trendy-like, you know, "spirit of the times", because pc is the right way to go - we should set up a big government group of bourgeois twits who'll remove any mention of cigarettes anywhere. And we should all be bald and wear glasses.

  • @wowdumbname I did to it reminded me of the flapjack theme song.

  • @dryumyumms What flapjack theme song? I vaguely remember this song used in a commercial from my childhood, but never thought about it til now.

  • boy did his son John Ritter look like him

  • did anyone else look this song up because of the ll bean tv ad?

  • This is the g-rated version of this song.

  • This is John Ritter's dad.

  • Gee, i haven't heard Tex Ritter since i was a knee-high to a grasshopper. The words in this version are the words originally written, i think

  • this must be a different version, the one we always listened to was about cigar trees ,alcohol streams and a homeless guy on a buggy =)

  • I like this version the best because all the alcohol, tobaco, and crime references are gone.

  • My Daddy used to sing this to us around the campfire.

  • well ill have you all know this song is a lie ive been on the big rock candy mountain and their aint any of the stuff he mentions there

  • I like this version, better to play for kids then the hobo version with it's cig trees, lol. Thanks for sharing and the cool slide show!

  • @verbusen screw that if i had some ciggaret trees id be rich ;)

  • @verbusen Yep, I sure agree! It's such a good thing to have things watered down for children and their oversensitive parents!

  • @verbusen I dream of cigarette trees and whiskey lakes,In the big rock candy mnt.smoke is good no disease everything is free even kids are free in the big rock candy mnt.

  • In case you do not know this is our favorite Three's Company "Jack Ritters'" father.

  • Thank you very much for uploading this. It is just peachy. And a HUGE thank you for Caruso. Any more Caruso would be greatly appreciated.
