Mr. John Williams, the score for this film is tied with Warhorse as my second favorite score. Close Encounters is my favorite score of yours. I really like in the first part where Jamie becomes lost in the huge crowd of people, the score is acting as counterpoint to the action in the film. Happy late birthday from a fan.
I love this movie it, the music amazing, the actors great! beautifully made and has to be one of my favorites, and yet I don't own it. Till that is, today I just bought a copy! several scenes in the movie were heartfelt, and touching. I love this film! and perhaps it is linked to my love of the classic war birds and I can relate to the little boy who was so fond of them as well!
Spielbergs best movie by far. So under rated especially given the fact that he's released crap like Indiana Jones 4 which people love - just goes to show that most people are stupid.
If I ever win something big, I'll let everyone in the audience know that this film, in my opinion, is Spielberg's greatest achievement. Beautiful, resonant, heart-breaking, gigantic.
I've seen this movie once and I want to see it again for it really was a very good one. A very nice thing to do to consume time... Touches heart, shows what courage means, will make you cry...
I think this might have been the first movie that when watch during my mid teens, brought a tear to my eye
Everything about this film was spectacular.... and yet whenever I bring it up with someone, they've never heard of the movie. So far I've gotten a good half dozen to actually sit down and watch it and love it.
I think that today Malkovich makes some bad movies, when we watch him in Empire Of The Sun we say "God, what is he doing now ?". That's my opinion. But this film is really awesome, really fabulous. And Spielberg and Williams are gods. =)
@SurTensionMusic It's as if a decade ago Malkovich gave up and started making horrible films. He can't seem to find characters anymore, so he walks on and does his grumbling self.
David Lean wanted to direct it...but gave it to Steven Spielberg...MY problem with this film is...like what he did with The Color Purple...he PRETTY IT UP...I read the book Empire of the Sun..by JG Ballard and it truly talks about his time in China. And it was not a great time and didn't see his parent for 3 years...But the music John Williams is beautiful and sorrowful. I can bring back everyone!!! WHERE IS THAT CUE?
@19thLion Have you seen his other movies? He is incredible in The Fighter and comes to show you how versatile he is. He's considerably young still and will continue to grow as an actor. So happy he won the Oscar.
@oldmoviemusic Thats probably because critics see so many films that very little fails to impress them anymore; but thats their loss eh? All I can tell you is that when the Mustang flies close, past the tower where Jim is watching, it never fails to raise hairs on the back of my neck; Besides, critics are few in number, whilst movie fans can be counted in the millions, so who is right?
@oldmoviemusic "Ciritc gave it pretty mediocre reviews" That is definitely evidence how standards were so much higher in the past. You had to do alot more to impress people back then.
@oldmoviemusic I think the poor reviews are from the fact that American Characters in the story are played as antagonistic (poor, gypsy-like characters) role which was something that Americans probably didn't want to be represented as.
@michaelisajerk i agree, some of the dialouge confused me and it was really long too, but amazing movie anyway :) also part of the inspiration for Tropic Thunder since Ben Stiller was Developing a story for that movie during this movie haha pretty cool
The scene that really begins the crying for me is when Jim walks over to one of the P51s when he first arrives in Soonchow and he is about to be shot down by a soldier, when three pilots walk up to Jim. Jim salutes them, and they salute him back. The magnitude of that scene along with Spielberg's direction, Bale's acting, and John Williams' music breaks my heart each and every time I see it.
A musical esoteric timeless masterpiece!!! Although the true Cadillac of the Skies ( the modern day Ferrari for the time ) was the ME - 262 Swallow of Nazi Germany! For the Third Reich personified mankind's pinnacle of rising militaristic prowess & ingenuity. Nevertheless, as a child this film was a superb movie & it's juxtaposed to a powerful tandem of directing talent and musical GENIUS!! Two thumbs up oldmoviemusic!! By the way do you have the opening song (In the Mood ) for "Hope & Glory"?
@satangel6667 It's okay to be jealous, envious, & partial at the same time.
ME-262 Swallows will always own the WWII skies!! The sound of the roar of the jet engines in relation to the P-51 .................. looks like your steak sauce is made in New York City because the ME-262 Swallows are the real A-1s, the real McCoys, the creme de la creme, the ayatollahs of rock n rollas, the world's finest - our Mighty Reich was the World and it took the world & bad weather to conquer them. Who is the real life Basie? lol, def an unforgettable character, especially in the book, which I'm currently reading. Cast perfectly! Does anyone know someone like him today, like a modern equivalent? Def a once and a lifetime person to come across
Genuine tears!!! God, when he embraces the front of that plane, it breaks my heart - best moment in the film. xxx or in any film... probably, for me. I can hear the lives of my forefathers through this music... their sacrifices during both Wars, at home and abroad... Deep... so deep.
