A tensioning sinew(s) along the inner bent leg: pull or release to adjust leg tension:
tension electronics to operate sinew tension is much much smaller and can be placed INSIDE the robot body : weight reduction, avoidance of dirt , no fragile damaging parts on the moving legs.... think of it.
If this should be based on cockroach movement then something is missing:
The robot "feet" are relatively slippery: it operates like a rubber tyre sliding over the ground (grass:slips, sand: slips concrete: bit of grip).
You should focus on the grip/variable grip(nails in or out).
The "dynamic leg stiffness" (shorter or longer bent leg) only adjusts the "jump/bounce" of the feet which is of lesser importance (seeing all the overkill on electronics/motors) beside which can be much simpler done:
I think robots have a bright future, we just haven't sincerely dared implementing versatile solutions yet. I see this thing running in the grass and jumping to bite into a frisbee. A precursor to "rat things".
It's pretty cool how the rows of legs take turns moving so it's rows 1 and 3, then row 2, then 1 and 3 again etc. Makes it feel really "alive" in a way when it moves like that.
Are these the same guys who made R-hex? Regardless, I'm glad they're still working on the R-hex concept because it is so awesome to see a tiny robot like that be so versatile and fast.

simpler:Like in real world: sinews/tendon:
A tensioning sinew(s) along the inner bent leg: pull or release to adjust leg tension:
tension electronics to operate sinew tension is much much smaller and can be placed INSIDE the robot body : weight reduction, avoidance of dirt , no fragile damaging parts on the moving legs.... think of it.
Next time observe living animals better..
