  • I would normally have wanted a British actress to play this part but Hepburn is so impressive (and sharp). I like the performance.

  • Elenaore,

    Regina Anglorum,

    Salus et vitae!

  • one of the most definitve movies ever

  • I absolutely love this music. This theme gets stuck in my head for hours...!!!

  • You get the feeling with this track that the world is going to end... but it sounds so awesome that you're okay with it.

  • What an astonishing film soundtrack to this film by John Barry

  • Agreed. La Hepburn at her classy and brassy best. Her scenes with Peter O'Toole make today's actors look like rejects from the Childrens' Film Foundation. "Whatever shall we do with mother?"

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH!

  • One of Katherine Hepburn's greatest roles. This is in my humble opinion of the best films I have seen in my lifetime.

  • "How dear of you to let me out of jail." Only an actress with Katharine Hepburn's towering presence could have played such a formidable woman as Eleanor of Acquitane. Brilliant, brilliant movie and a spectacular soundtrack.

  • I know the problem well, people just don't seem to appreciate fine speaking voices such as ours anymore, how sadly the world has changed for the worse.

  • what splendid music! What an entrance! thanks for posting this (my favorite part of this score)!

  • Are those stone figures actually at Chinon? They scare the hell out of me, and I'd love to visit some day.

  • This track sounds very similar to A View to a Kill, ..

  • A truly great marrage of music & film Barry at his best, Many Thanks

  • la musica es preciosa, pero me da un miedillo que te cagas jajaj

  • It's my favorite scene -- just because of the music. Once I heart it, I never got this melody out of my head.

The most haunting and majestetic moment of the soundtrack!

  • "He married out of love a woman out of legend. Never in Alexandria, Rome or Camelot has there been such a queen."

    That film is a feast.

  • This was my favorite movie for years. The soundtrack seems so authentic. I hope Barry--and the cinematographer--got an oscar for this film.

  • i do love this movie very mjtch . especially hepburns portraial of elenore and the hhtae/love thing henry and her got

  • me da miedo la musica del principio xD jaajajjaj

  • Who else could play Queen Eleanor? Katharine Hepburn is THE BEST!

  • Thank you for isolating such gorgeous music. I always found this entrance sequence (with the use of both major and minor keys) both majestic and somewhat foreboding. And the vocal chant is lovely. And of course, no words can properly Henry and Eleanor's sparring dialogue.

  • One of the greatest entrances of any great actress in any great film. We watch "Lion" every Christmas - it's a sort of home movie for us, as through both grandmothers my siblings and I descend from almost everyone in the cast: Henry, Eleanor, Alice, John, Philippe Augustus, and Sir William Marshall. Eleanor's our fave, of course :)

  • @HayterMenzies That is fabulous!! What a great history--yes, you and yours really have a stake in this film.

  • "How kind of you to let me out of prison"

"It's only for the holidays"....Great play, GREAT soundtrack.

  • "How was your crossing? Did the channel part for you?" "It went flat when I told it to." One of the best written plays ever. No one else had Hepburn's voice.

  • I love this movie...love Eleanor of Aquitaine's character. Then again, I am biased....because I bear the same name as her!

  • I met John Barry in the 1970´s in a very unexcepted way. I was the audio man

helping with an interview for a performing arts magazine doing an interview with Jerry Goldsmith

Jerry and his lovely wife were extremely gracious and we were having a great time when the doorbell rang and a taxi driver told Jerry that he had a delivery for him. We all went out and I helped a very drunk John Barry into the Goldsmith house.

At this time he was very homesick and the Goldsmith took care of him lie a son.

  • This scene is soooo long. I'm sooo high. What a great score.

  • The chant goes:

"Elenaore, Regina Anglorum, salus et vitae"

    which roughly translates to:

"Elenaor, Queen of England, health and life to you".

  • This IS the greatest film ever made, John Barry's score is the icing and the marzipan on the cake. O'Tooles performance is the finest of his magnificent career, no other actor could have done this. He goes from slapstick comedy to towering almost physotic rages in the blink of an eye and then back again to a brooding magnificence. What a cast, what a story, what a score and then there is Katherine. Need I say more

  • @brit1066 And over 100 excellent one liners to boot! Agree with you wholeheartedly.

  • @brit1066 I agree! This is indeed the greatest film ever. I've loved it since the first time I saw it as a new release in '68. The music, the cast, the writing, the directing, the scenery and sets ... everything is perfect. I've watched it over 30 times and find something new each time. Sadly, I have to watch it alone as reciting the dialogue with the actors REALLY annoys people.

  • Anthony Harvey said that the RIVER flooded that week, and that it was a great concern by the crew that Katherine and her rowing team wouldn't make the mark. BUT they did. Katherine was NOT scared of this scene. She relished it.

  • Excuse me, this is a small point but, the movie takes place at the Castle Chinon in present day France (not England)!

  • "It is set in what is now France at Chinon Castle, although at the time this was part of England or rather lands under the domain of the crown of England."

    Please see the other comments.

  • England was hardly the "world's most powerful empire" in the 12th century. ( In reference to your video description)

  • England was coalescing as a nation in the 12th century. It did not approach empire until the reign of Elizabeth Tudor.

Eleanor was a duchess in her own name,

and an influential queen consort. Elizabeth Tudor was a ruling monarch.

  • @rjcd90 Maybe not the most powerful empire, but Henry II was certainly the most powerful English ruler in Medieval times, his kingdom encompassed England, Wales, Ireland and half of France

  • @Soundtrackcollector, Sorry but Chinon Castle belonged to the crown of Aquitaine not England.

  • I love how happy Katharine looks when there is that close-up of her on the boat!

  • Long Live Queen Katharine

  • Awesome. Shows how much affection will always be there for Eleanore.

"I could peel your like a pear, and God himself would call it justice" E to H

  • Can anyone say what the name of this track is?

  • It's in the title above the video screen.

    Thank you for your interest.

  • Thanks - it was so obvious that I missed it.

  • @Soundtrackcollector The Latin lyrics translate to "Eleanor, Queen of the English, health and life".

  • @jlhkia "Eleanor's Arrival"

  • LMAO "How was your crossing?" "Did the channel part for you?" Love that line.

Sets the tone of their relationship for the whole film.

    Great Score.

    Great film.

  • John Barry encapsulate everything in his theme for this part of the movie.

  • Quite different from the rest of the score.

    Glad you like it!

  • This is how it should be done.

  • Just beautiful - I searched London in the mid -1980s for the LP of this music and paid a fortune for it!

  • Glad you enjoyed it.

    Thanks

  • This is one of my favourite scenes from this movie, the photography and music are superb. Just one point though, is this set in England or was Henry and his family spending Christmas in a French castle which is what I thought.

  • It is set in what is now France at Chinon Castle, although at the time this was part of England or rather lands under the domain of the crown of England. Thanks to King John (seen in this movie as prince John), we lost all but Calais to the French.

Thus is one of my favourite movies, although I wish Peter O'Toole didn't shout so much, must be his acting style. It's well worth buying the DVD for the directors commentary.

  • my favorite part of the movie...funny to think that she was wearing a bathing suit underneath the fur coat. the water was rather

treacherous during the filming and she wanted to prepared in case the boat tipped over. classic kate...love her!

  • Great comment and information - thanks.

Apparently, Katharine Hepburn affectionately referred to Peter O'Toole as "pig" during filming. Every day at five o'clock the two would unwind over a cigarette and a glass of white wine.

  • Could you post the full movie?

  • una obra maestra del genial john barry.

  • Indeed a masterpiece.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • Magnificent.

  • Glad you enjoyed it -thanks for commenting.

  • Thanks I'll be sure to look in when you post.

  • This is my favorite entrance scene for Katharine Hepburn in any film. I love the sacredness of the music.

  • I'm glad you like it!

    Thanks for commenting.

  • You're welcome. I'm a big Katharine Hepburn fan, in case you couldn't tell and The Lion In WInter is one of my favorite works of hers. John Barry did wonders composing the music for this movie.

  • I've been looking for this for a long time.thanks a lot for posting it!,can you by any chance tell me where to find the opening theme of this film, the one that plays during the opening credits?

  • The Barry OST CD (US import)was recently in the sales in HMV for £7 pounds!

Will try and post this one in the near the future.

    Thank you for commenting.

  • Thanks for this. The castle is meant to be Chinon, Henry was also Count of Anjou.

  • Appreciate the information - thanks for commenting.

  • Thanks for uploading this, Barry's score gives this a wonderfully dramatic feel. Loved it! Great film, great score!

LOL! "Did the channel Part for you?"

  • No problem...glad you enjoyed it.

"How dear of you to let me out of jail."

    "It's only for the holidays"

  • Great song. I love John Barry.

  • Glad you enjoyed it!

    Thanks for commenting.
