"How dear of you to let me out of jail." Only the magnificent Katharine Hepburn could play a character as formidable as Eleanor of Aquitane. And John Berry's score is glorious. Both he and Hepburn deserved their Oscars.
Agreed. La Hepburn at her classy and brassy best. Her scenes with Peter O'Toole make today's actors look like rejects from the Childrens' Film Foundation. "Whatever shall we do with mother?"
"How dear of you to let me out of jail." Only an actress with Katharine Hepburn's towering presence could have played such a formidable woman as Eleanor of Acquitane. Brilliant, brilliant movie and a spectacular soundtrack.
I know the problem well, people just don't seem to appreciate fine speaking voices such as ours anymore, how sadly the world has changed for the worse.
Thank you for isolating such gorgeous music. I always found this entrance sequence (with the use of both major and minor keys) both majestic and somewhat foreboding. And the vocal chant is lovely. And of course, no words can properly Henry and Eleanor's sparring dialogue.
One of the greatest entrances of any great actress in any great film. We watch "Lion" every Christmas - it's a sort of home movie for us, as through both grandmothers my siblings and I descend from almost everyone in the cast: Henry, Eleanor, Alice, John, Philippe Augustus, and Sir William Marshall. Eleanor's our fave, of course :)
"How was your crossing? Did the channel part for you?" "It went flat when I told it to." One of the best written plays ever. No one else had Hepburn's voice.
I met John Barry in the 1970´s in a very unexcepted way. I was the audio man
helping with an interview for a performing arts magazine doing an interview with Jerry Goldsmith
Jerry and his lovely wife were extremely gracious and we were having a great time when the doorbell rang and a taxi driver told Jerry that he had a delivery for him. We all went out and I helped a very drunk John Barry into the Goldsmith house.
At this time he was very homesick and the Goldsmith took care of him lie a son.
This IS the greatest film ever made, John Barry's score is the icing and the marzipan on the cake. O'Tooles performance is the finest of his magnificent career, no other actor could have done this. He goes from slapstick comedy to towering almost physotic rages in the blink of an eye and then back again to a brooding magnificence. What a cast, what a story, what a score and then there is Katherine. Need I say more
@brit1066 I agree! This is indeed the greatest film ever. I've loved it since the first time I saw it as a new release in '68. The music, the cast, the writing, the directing, the scenery and sets ... everything is perfect. I've watched it over 30 times and find something new each time. Sadly, I have to watch it alone as reciting the dialogue with the actors REALLY annoys people.
Anthony Harvey said that the RIVER flooded that week, and that it was a great concern by the crew that Katherine and her rowing team wouldn't make the mark. BUT they did. Katherine was NOT scared of this scene. She relished it.
"It is set in what is now France at Chinon Castle, although at the time this was part of England or rather lands under the domain of the crown of England."
@rjcd90 Maybe not the most powerful empire, but Henry II was certainly the most powerful English ruler in Medieval times, his kingdom encompassed England, Wales, Ireland and half of France
This is one of my favourite scenes from this movie, the photography and music are superb. Just one point though, is this set in England or was Henry and his family spending Christmas in a French castle which is what I thought.
It is set in what is now France at Chinon Castle, although at the time this was part of England or rather lands under the domain of the crown of England. Thanks to King John (seen in this movie as prince John), we lost all but Calais to the French.
Thus is one of my favourite movies, although I wish Peter O'Toole didn't shout so much, must be his acting style. It's well worth buying the DVD for the directors commentary.
Apparently, Katharine Hepburn affectionately referred to Peter O'Toole as "pig" during filming. Every day at five o'clock the two would unwind over a cigarette and a glass of white wine.
You're welcome. I'm a big Katharine Hepburn fan, in case you couldn't tell and The Lion In WInter is one of my favorite works of hers. John Barry did wonders composing the music for this movie.
I've been looking for this for a long time.thanks a lot for posting it!,can you by any chance tell me where to find the opening theme of this film, the one that plays during the opening credits?

I would normally have wanted a British actress to play this part but Hepburn is so impressive (and sharp). I like the performance.

It's my favorite scene -- just because of the music. Once I heart it, I never got this melody out of my head.
The most haunting and majestetic moment of the soundtrack!

The chant goes:
"Elenaore, Regina Anglorum, salus et vitae"
which roughly translates to:
"Elenaor, Queen of England, health and life to you".

England was hardly the "world's most powerful empire" in the 12th century. ( In reference to your video description)
rjcd90 2 years ago
England was coalescing as a nation in the 12th century. It did not approach empire until the reign of Elizabeth Tudor.
Eleanor was a duchess in her own name,
and an influential queen consort. Elizabeth Tudor was a ruling monarch.
