  • the monks & the fugs complement one another as a soundtrack for '65.

  • The electric banjo is the bomb!!!

  • too cool for their time!!!

  • I have become intrigued with this sound, energy, perspective...could you imagine hearing live?

  • Real very very good Rock Band. Jimi Hendrix said it intresting music. I say it is Fantastic natural sounds and actual words.

  • Hey, berbotty, you dropped something.

  • Nicely done!

  • The world was never more modern than in the year 1967.

  • @imsencat this was '65 '66

  • @imsencat this was '66

  • It kills me every time Dave syncopates his banjo.

  • Not your typical cookie cutter 60's band,...........they have such a awesome driving beat.

  • @ryanfard I just told Black Francis to check out the monks. He was in town for Doolittle concert. (His wife is my son's godmother)

  • @berbotty bro thats awesome the pixies fucking rock black francis is a unique frontman

  • its like a bogus small faces copy

  • They're like a more fun Velvet Underground. They're just as vicious and ground breaking but fucking catchy and fun. These guys aren't brooding New York assholes (love the Velvets but that describes them perfectly): they are having a blast. Look at the smiles. Incredible. The banjo owns too.

  • something truly completely different.

...nobody knew how to dance their music :)

  • One of the most exciting, influential ,and under rated bands of the 60's!

  • @JoHomza1

i dont think they were underrated. they just were unknown.

  • @Funnysterste

Unknown?? Where the FUCK are You from?? UNKNOWN?? What?? Theres a whole Goddamn FEATURE FILM about them...UNKNOWN??? When and where were you born?? Was it in the 20th century?? Was it on EARTH?? UNKNOWN?? You INSULT me...Unknown indeed!!!

  • @MrFlashBazbo I know them and I know the feature film. But do you really think they are famous? Ask random people if they know The Monks.

This video has 56k views. If they are that well known as you try to suggest by your enraged comment, it should be some millions of views.

  • @Funnysterste

Ok...I just got back from asking 125 random people on the streets of the Ohio State University Campus area

106 Knew who they were and could name 5 songs and at least 2 members and at least names of 2 Albums

    IN YOUR FACE!!!

  • @MrFlashBazbo: That is unbelievably AWESOME! 106 knew The Monks out of 125 asked. God Bless YOU SIR for attempting such a thing. I wear my Monks T-shirt everywhere hoping to make some converts. The popularity of The Monks has come a long way over these last four years or so, I know You Tube introduced ME to them back in '06 and it's been MONK TIME ever since! I still wonder how they would have gone over in the States. I'm guessing a guest appearance on "The Addams Family."

  • @MattHatter

Well....I don't know....That would be an acurate guess. After all there was a Garage Band on The Munsters (Anyone remember who??)

  • @MrFlashBazbo: Unfortunately America wouldn't have taken these guys seriously at all. Well I guess America did in a way, their album was rejected for release in the States because of supposed sexual innuendos and the whole anti-war message before it became common to hear bands singing such things. The U.S. would have probably been like, "Oh what bunch of cute funny guys looking like that" when it wasn't supposed to be "funny" at all.

  • @MattHatter One other thing....How did you get so fucking COOL??? I know for me it was a LONG uphill journey and had many FINE teachers and Mentors! Wesley Harris The Cornell Twins Vickie Dowding Ron House Deborah Russel Mr. Rabish (Homer Mich 6th Grade) Mr. Bell (Litchfield Mich 11th Grade) Deborah Look And of course the wonderful Gene Sculati Micheal Weldon Micheal Medved Rev. Ivan Stang Thanks to you all for shaping my warped little mind!
  • @MrFlashBazbo: Well my coolness has been a long time in the making as well. I take it you saw my playlists on here! LOL. I've been obsessed with music since I was 3 years old, but it was at the age of 9 that my obsession of '60s/'70s rock began. I'm now 33. My quest for knowledge on bands from the era never stopped. I stumbled upon The Monks in '06 when I was looking up bands from 1966. It was "Boys Are Boys" and it blew my mind! Like where did THESE GUYS come from?! Ha ha ha.

  • @MattHatter

No Matt I haven't seen your playlist but I'm gonna look it up now!

  • @MrFlashBazbo

whoa, those weren't a random 125 people at a jack oblivian concert or something, were they?

In wisconsin people not in with the "punk" crowd don't seem familiar with the monks.

  • @ironpizza

Do I even Know Jack Oblivion? No....they were kids who know music because they don't listen to Radio Disney or WNCI...Check out WWCD or KBUX The Underground...OSU kids KNOW Music!

  • @ironpizza

OH Ignore my last comment....Wisconsin...Yhea....not a lot of Punx in Wisconsin are there??

  • @MrFlashBazbo

we have a small, but strong scene. But it mostly comes from Milwaukee as far as i know.

  • pretty good

  • gary was/is one of the greatest singers of rock and roll

  • this is greatness!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I needed to get 44 years old to discover this breathtaking Band...

I am speechless and deeply impressed.

    Monks forever......

  • Same goes for me....(41)...

  • The form of rock n roll of today really sucks.

  • rock'n'roll is dead. it died a quick but painful death.

  • Oh, hush, you twerp. Yeah, you, Funnysterste.

  • @Funnysterste

And your intelligence went with it!!

  • @MrFlashBazbo with what?

  • the future was then....

  • he has a great voice, love these guys, their goffballs :-D

  • Thanks for posting these on YouTube! I learned about the Monks when a friend shared this video on Facebook. I've since bought Black Monk Time and have become obsessed with the intro for Oh, How To Do Now...

  • I'VE GOT IT! I'VE GOT IT! I have the DVD! Both Beat Club performances are included in their entirety and they look fantastic! Ocasionally there is a hint of videotape squiggle but other than that? PERFECT! Dave has never looked better rockin' that banjo! And Roger's slightly annoyed facial expressions behind the kit are clear and priceless! If you like this band, YOU MUST OWN THIS DVD!

  • IT'S HERE EVERYBODY! THE DVD HAS BEEN RELEASED! I just ordered mine two days ago....I CANNOT WAIT! I can't wait to show family and friends what I expierenced in The Red Cat Theater in L.A. back on July 1, 2006. The sad thing for me will be seeing and hearing Dave talk. I know I'm gonna be crying! Dave was such a good guy, full of love for his fans! He embraced me like I was his grandson or something when he met me. Thank you for your contribution to rock and roll Dave! Rock that banjo in heaven!

  • And you wanna tell us what the name of the DVD is...?

  • Why sertainly! "Monks: The Transatlantic Feedback." My best friend just saw it and loved it. I just got "Black Monk Time" on vinyl too seeing as though it's been remastered and re-released by Light In The Attic Records. Great Package!

  • VA - Nuggets compilation vol.I

    5 star

  • WE'RE ALMOST THERE FELLOW MONK FANS! I just checked Amazon and the DVD has appeared on the website but it's not available for pre-order yet. It should be available on March 13th! I'm only hoping they don't push the date back again, they already did it once, it was to be released on Feb. 27th.

  • MAY 9TH!!! What the hell? Worse than the cable guy I swear.

  • NO JOKE! Amazon has it back up for pre-order, and this time it's for real. Light In The Attic Records is re-issuing "Black Monk Time" on vinyl and their demos titling it "The Early Monks." Both on 180 gram vinyl. There's even going to be Monk trading cards involved!

  • Does anyone have the DVD yet? If so, please upload the better quality clips pronto! They're the best, no pixilation or distortion of the picture. The ones I saw have a "sepia" color tone to them, probally right from the master film reel!

  • it was not filmed, but recorded on tape ( 2 inch quad)

  • Ah, so that's why the quality is good in the movie! It's videotape! Thanks for clearing that up for me.

  • fucking best!

  • wow. congratulations. today this video was selected as Pre Punk / Early Pioneers by the NYC Punk Rock Evolution foundation.

  • gosh! those 'gi's could rock!

  • THIS JUST IN!!!! The Monks documentary will be released on DVD on Feb. 27th, 2009 but will be available at Play Loud! Productions online store on Jan. 10th, 2009! • If it wasn't for people like John Peel, I wonder if anyone in North America would have heard of The Monks at all.

  • man they're so freaking tight. most bands these days couldn't even hope to have this kind of passion and energy and talent.

  • thanks for posting this!!! This group blows me away. Military skills turned into it's antithesis ! Surreal and in it's own category, where these guys into LSD at this point? I wonder if they were into the drink or the psychedelics..any one know that background?

  • The record is ten times as wild.

  • Yeah it is...best party record of all time! Right up there with Pass The Peas by the JB's.

  • These guys were amazing, totally unique for their time...fantastic music and style...the ropes give quite a nice touch!

  • Genius!

The guys who also came up with "I hate you with a passion, but call me"

Or: "sleepy Maria don't drink, drunken Maria don't sleep"! (hahaha)

    Fantastic stuff!

Waaaaaaay ahead of their (black monk) time!!!!

    A fan from the Netherlands

  • That was real punk!

    Greetings from

     Chile

  • amazing. this must of been revolutionary to the ears of anybody who actually heard the monks. could hendrix have heard them i wonder?

  • According to something I read (I think) on the Monks' official site, Hendrix played a show with them at some point and was extremely fascinated by Gary Burger's unique use of feedback.

  • So, yes!

  • RIP Dave Day!

  •

This is a great loss. Heartbeats out to friends, family, and all us fans who never got to see him play live.

    oo

  • goddamit they did ages ago what Josh homme is attmpting now (1:20)

  • Real attitude!!!

  • Dear God, these guys in 1966 can hold their own against any modern band of 2007.

There needs to be some sort of Monks Tribute tour!

    wow, simply....wow!

  • great...sooo wunderfull... i love the monks!

  • I came across these guys here on You Tube by accident in February '06 and have never looked back since! Got to meet Dave (banjo) and Eddie (bass) that July at the premire of their documentary in L.A., nicest friggin' guys. I've spent almost two years now trying to turn people I know onto this band. Ain't it so worth it????

    MONKS rule!

  • Check out the brand new trailer to the up-coming German theatrical release to the documentary film "monks-the transatlantic feedback" (Kinostart 4.10.2007). This wonderful German TV footage is in the final film in pristine quality.

  • The most important video on YouTube.

  • Absolutely one of the greatest contributions the American military has given the world.

  • Agree with the above, was gutted when this disappeared from my favourites, and so many others from The Creation thru to the better version of Ike & Tina on the big TNT show...

  • Thankyou for putting this back on! The BEST thing on Youtube!
