They're like a more fun Velvet Underground. They're just as vicious and ground breaking but fucking catchy and fun. These guys aren't brooding New York assholes (love the Velvets but that describes them perfectly): they are having a blast. Look at the smiles. Incredible. The banjo owns too.
Unknown?? Where the FUCK are You from?? UNKNOWN?? What?? Theres a whole Goddamn FEATURE FILM about them...UNKNOWN??? When and where were you born?? Was it in the 20th century?? Was it on EARTH?? UNKNOWN?? You INSULT me...Unknown indeed!!!
@MrFlashBazbo: That is unbelievably AWESOME! 106 knew The Monks out of 125 asked. God Bless YOU SIR for attempting such a thing. I wear my Monks T-shirt everywhere hoping to make some converts. The popularity of The Monks has come a long way over these last four years or so, I know You Tube introduced ME to them back in '06 and it's been MONK TIME ever since! I still wonder how they would have gone over in the States. I'm guessing a guest appearance on "The Addams Family."
@MrFlashBazbo: Unfortunately America wouldn't have taken these guys seriously at all. Well I guess America did in a way, their album was rejected for release in the States because of supposed sexual innuendos and the whole anti-war message before it became common to hear bands singing such things. The U.S. would have probably been like, "Oh what bunch of cute funny guys looking like that" when it wasn't supposed to be "funny" at all.
@MattHatter One other thing....How did you get so fucking COOL??? I know for me it was a LONG uphill journey and had many FINE teachers and Mentors! Wesley Harris The Cornell Twins Vickie Dowding Ron House Deborah Russel Mr. Rabish (Homer Mich 6th Grade) Mr. Bell (Litchfield Mich 11th Grade) Deborah Look And of course the wonderful Gene Sculati Micheal Weldon Micheal Medved Rev. Ivan Stang Thanks to you all for shaping my warped little mind!
@MrFlashBazbo: Well my coolness has been a long time in the making as well. I take it you saw my playlists on here! LOL. I've been obsessed with music since I was 3 years old, but it was at the age of 9 that my obsession of '60s/'70s rock began. I'm now 33. My quest for knowledge on bands from the era never stopped. I stumbled upon The Monks in '06 when I was looking up bands from 1966. It was "Boys Are Boys" and it blew my mind! Like where did THESE GUYS come from?! Ha ha ha.
Do I even Know Jack Oblivion? No....they were kids who know music because they don't listen to Radio Disney or WNCI...Check out WWCD or KBUX The Underground...OSU kids KNOW Music!
Thanks for posting these on YouTube! I learned about the Monks when a friend shared this video on Facebook. I've since bought Black Monk Time and have become obsessed with the intro for Oh, How To Do Now...
I'VE GOT IT! I'VE GOT IT! I have the DVD! Both Beat Club performances are included in their entirety and they look fantastic! Ocasionally there is a hint of videotape squiggle but other than that? PERFECT! Dave has never looked better rockin' that banjo! And Roger's slightly annoyed facial expressions behind the kit are clear and priceless! If you like this band, YOU MUST OWN THIS DVD!
IT'S HERE EVERYBODY! THE DVD HAS BEEN RELEASED! I just ordered mine two days ago....I CANNOT WAIT! I can't wait to show family and friends what I expierenced in The Red Cat Theater in L.A. back on July 1, 2006. The sad thing for me will be seeing and hearing Dave talk. I know I'm gonna be crying! Dave was such a good guy, full of love for his fans! He embraced me like I was his grandson or something when he met me. Thank you for your contribution to rock and roll Dave! Rock that banjo in heaven!
Why sertainly! "Monks: The Transatlantic Feedback." My best friend just saw it and loved it. I just got "Black Monk Time" on vinyl too seeing as though it's been remastered and re-released by Light In The Attic Records. Great Package!
WE'RE ALMOST THERE FELLOW MONK FANS! I just checked Amazon and the DVD has appeared on the website but it's not available for pre-order yet. It should be available on March 13th! I'm only hoping they don't push the date back again, they already did it once, it was to be released on Feb. 27th.
NO JOKE! Amazon has it back up for pre-order, and this time it's for real. Light In The Attic Records is re-issuing "Black Monk Time" on vinyl and their demos titling it "The Early Monks." Both on 180 gram vinyl. There's even going to be Monk trading cards involved!
Does anyone have the DVD yet? If so, please upload the better quality clips pronto! They're the best, no pixilation or distortion of the picture. The ones I saw have a "sepia" color tone to them, probally right from the master film reel!
THIS JUST IN!!!! The Monks documentary will be released on DVD on Feb. 27th, 2009 but will be available at Play Loud! Productions online store on Jan. 10th, 2009! The DVD will contain 70 minutes worth of bonus footage WHICH WILL INCLUDE all of the Beat Club performances IN THEIR ENTIRETY! It's gonna be MONK TIME all over again in '09 folks!
Im a huge music nut and just found out about The Monks few weeks ago. Im amazed ive never heard them now . Downloaded Black Monk Time and WOW. One of the best albums ive ever heard .

According to something I read (I think) on the Monks' official site, Hendrix played a show with them at some point and was extremely fascinated by Gary Burger's unique use of feedback.

@MrFlashBazbo I know them and I know the feature film. But do you really think they are famous? Ask random people if they know The Monks.
This video has 56k views. If they are that well known as you try to suggest by your enraged comment, it should be some millions of views.
