@ravebritt hell no it didn't have the games so it fails, same with dreamcast, what was SEGA thinking? They made Genesis and decided to F it all up after that lol
@MrROTD sega had the best fucking games ever: jet grind radio, crazy taxi, nights into the dreams, house of the dead, panzer dragoon, shenmue, virtua fighter to name a few. they kicked ass, so much better than tekken, gran turismo and final fantasy. Sales don't equate to quality, asshole.
i have to say, that i had a saturn first..and i WAS a huge sega fan!
but when later the ps1 came out an d i saw the grpahics and the games....i got owned. the ps1 was way better!
sega fucked there fan up with the 32x and some shit...they where great in some cases, but also assholes when i look back now....in the arcades there where the best back in the days! virtua fighter, daytona, house of the dead...
This takes me back. Got this on demo 1 with my first playstation. Prob did use most (if not all) the ps1's power and I don't remember seeing any ps1 game looking this good.
Graphics looks more like an avarage PS2 game. Since there's only the t-rex model in this scene they could use all the resources of the PS1 on this single model so it looks better than most PS1 games.
It's using all it's power to generate the one model so you wouldn't of seen any games looking this schmick. This is still impressive today- bloody amazing in '95. I remember it well.
@NashiNashii oh, thanks for clearing that up. This looks more like something you would see in a late 90s PC game (so i guess that says how much more powerful PCs were by then lol) but ya this is pretty impressive
@redeadx5 Well, because this is a tech demo, where there's only one creature on black BG, whereas in RE1 there would be a lot more going on at the same time.
@redeadx5 This is the PS1's entire processing power going into a single model. When you do shit like maps, multiple enemies with AI's and more, you run out of memory to do it, so everything looks ugly. It's called spreading it too thin.
i love how these old tech demos focused on one single object. here you see a T-rex walking in the darkness, its almost a bit scary. this makes you question if those are dead pixels or if the machine is actually alive. it truly shows the change from 2D to 3D
Playable Demos: Abe's Oddysee Formula 1 '97 Hercules Lifeforce Tenka Porsche Challenge Rage Racer Kurushi Overboard Technical: Dino Manta V - CD Video: Soul Blade Rosco McQueen still got mine ever since my brother got the PSX when it was realeased in europe SCED-00816
this was the 1st system i owned back in 97' when i was only 4 years old, damn it looked so great back then, now it just looks like someone took a shit on the graphics and then wiped their ass with them as well!
@toxic2k7 No. you were right. Those were the good old times, when that kinda stuff impressed. Now it's all just meh..another CoD and that kinda crap. Nothing to really blow your socks off.
That's pretty cool, would that have been completely run by the computer, or was it moved/rotated by a controller? I think the latter would be much cooler.
you can use your controller to rotate, pan and zoom. You can also turn the dinosaur's head and open its mouth... etc..All this with your PS1 controller!
I remember back in 1995, the demo made my friends shit their pants. It was so awesome...
I tend to agree because I always hated the pixelated textures in PS1 games, but the N64 had a lot of problems as well. It was a bad time for 3d graphics outside of arcades!
xmas day 98 Manchester England i was playing demo 1! It had lifeforce tenka, hercules, rage racer (not ridge? some spinoff i think) and a load of other stuff. And this t rex demo was really impressive and scary aswell. And they had another tech demo with sting rays in it. And you could open the drive and put a cd in and it would play a visualisation, later ps1 did this without the need for a disc.
People claim the N64 did but I think the PS1 did. Their use of colour was certainly better. This model is fantastic for the graphics engines at the time.
@footreaver omega boost is probably the best looking ps1 game you're gonna find. it's a space mech shooter type deal developed by polyphony digital, the same people that did gran turismo (in fact it's one of the only games PD's done that isn't GT and the ONLY game that wasn't a driving simulation is some fashion). pretty fun game too, kinda like panzer dragoon with big ass robots.
@TheTaylormanson you stated you still have the original disc with the t-rex and other stuff on it. Know where i can get it online? whats the name on the disc so i look for it maybe?
The original PS was the first console I played in my lifetime. When I found out it was 32-bit, the same league as the Saturn and 3DO and even lesser than the N64, I couldn't believe it. It all looked too good to be 32-bit!
Man if I didn't have so much wire-clutter in my room, I'd so hook my old PS up and play it again. Not even playing these things on a PS2 or a PS3 feels as good as playing it as intended. :)
Oh man, I remember this one! I borrowed it from a friend in 1999 to try it with PSEmuPro, and I was astonished!
To understand better how I felt, imagine running software from a current-gen console on your computer, and to your surprise it looks better there than it does on the console itself... That's how I felt!
If this was made in 1995 then yes it's older than me, or even if it was made before October 1996. I never thought there would be a 3d game looking like this older than me.

I have this on Demo 1 version 5 from 1997. Love that disc as it's got demos of Oddworld and Hercules. lol I remember being mesmerised by this tech demo as a kid but always wondered why hardly any games had this level of detail, and why the games that did were full of clipping, flashing polygons and texture distortion. lol
@CLeRKSfan4life Haha, now you see that showing a simple walking T-rex with this ammount of detail took up all the PS1's power and left no room for an actual game? :D
@xilefian It seems that way. There were no games that had this level of detail throughout and as I said, the ones that came close had glitchy visuals. It probably could've been done but level size and gameplay would've been lacking.
@UserNameSuCock - Obviously, since they used most of the PS1's resources in just rendering that dinosaur. Add some more scenery and you'll be raping the console's hardware in no time.
Think about it though, the entire PS1 system rendering this - that's all the CPU and all the GPU power going into powering this one model. Of course you can't get an entire game world looking like this.

@xilefian It seems that way. There were no games that had this level of detail throughout and as I said, the ones that came close had glitchy visuals. It probably could've been done but level size and gameplay would've been lacking.

@xilefian The Lost World had effectively that T-rex in green, as well as a whole game.

It is PSone and it`s also real -time, but the system is unable to do enviroment + gameplay + sound effects with this dinosaur, unlike say N64.

god i remember this! even though ps1 games never actually looked as good as this

@UserNameSuCock YEah!!! Only one dinosaur are easy. But with enviroment and other objects, psx couldn't move all.

@UserNameSuCock - Obviously, since they used most of the PS1's resources in just rendering that dinosaur. Add some more scenery and you'll be raping the console's hardware in no time.

ah i remember this thing, was awesome

Think about it though, the entire PS1 system rendering this - that's all the CPU and all the GPU power going into powering this one model. Of course you can't get an entire game world looking like this.

@instantarts I was gonna say, for PS1 it looks really detailed
