  • I just saw Metric tonight. They were awesome, and so is The Soft Skeleton. Most creative video I've seen in a while.

  • really good song !

    love it

  • love this song. love emily haines.

  • i can cry to this.yah.

  • thats good to know :]

  • her voice its so beautiful :)

  • there's a lot about this video that, for me, evokes ideas and imagery from Lord of the Flies. anyone else?

  • oh definitely, i never thought about it that way until you said that! great thinking!

  • WOW! disturbingly beautiful

  • im a huge fan of her...add me :)

  • immaculate.

    x

  • Such a beautiful song...really inspires me to make more music...

  • I love this vid. Does anyone else see a refernece to Lord of The Flies with the pig mask that looks like it has flies on it? Or is that just me.

  • awesome song, but the vid. is really creepy

    i ♥ metric

  • that vid's pretty weird.

but the song is sweeeet. :)

  • that piano part is so harrowing...

  • Someone obviously pissed in your Cheerios. Hope you brushed well.

  • i showed this vid to my art teacher (rod prousse) he thought it was neat. Told him i wanted to do some infared art...

  • Today,

    I was playing guitar and

    felt something strange.

  • blisters are normal...yes they hurt..but when u start playing more often...thing start to fall into place :D

    Practice = blisters= better playing....

    have fun with that!

  • and it was a pleasnt experience.

  • I love this song and the vid is also vary awesome

  • love this video

  • I really love this song. What is it's meaning?

  • Oh god.

  • what a very awesome video

  • Instead you decided your best course of action would be to simply spew word-vomit all over the comment box.

And finally, if you decided your best course of action was insults, you could have picked something better than "white trash" to describe the daughter of a poet and TV journalist who attended UBC and Concordia.

  • wingmanse7en:

I know you are probably just trolling for a response from fans, and you got it.

Regardless, if you truly disliked the song or artist for whatever reason, it probably would have been in your best interests to give a reason to oh.. say... why you didn't like the song?

  • emily is so brilliant

words cant describe how amazing she is<3 ,

    her lyrics

    her music

    so raw

  • Is that inverted solarization used in the video?

  • this song

is just stuck in my head.

    forever

  • Wow wingmanse7en...I am fascinated by people like you...to want to rape the burnt bodies of dead children to prove how much you dislike a particular artist...all you do is give the music power and make the rest of us look infinitely more evolved than you are...shame....

  • i totally agree.

honestly if he has nothing productive and/or relevant to say than why make yourself look like an idiot while not even stating a good point??

  • because he still gets attention. those who can't create try to destroy ... though he fails even at that.

  • omg that is like the funniest comment i ever saw. so random

  • this son as on CSI miami

    [darkroom]

and I fell in LOVE with this

    song!

  • This video is amazing. Emily Haines is so beautiful, even in infrared.

  • this song always makes me cry. :/

  • all her solo stuff makes me want to cry too, but in a good sort of way

  • Comment removed

  • If this video wasnt on infrared it wouldnt be 1/1000 as touching, the only difference would be how it was looked at. Even the trivial stuff seemed sad and depressing.

Thats one of the meanings I got, if our life is going to be a hell or not depends on us, everyone have problems, the only difference is how we face it.

  • I agree with that!

I read an interview with the director and he said the setting of the video was a beach to show how one person's hell could be another's heaven, something like that.

  • super creepy but its susceptible to the song

  • Creepy, negative yet another brilliant video.

As the song said, "our hell is a good life"

our life is too fragile to be seen, but we're still torturing it.

  • Brilliant video...I take the meaning as seeing the inverted self, not the one you present to others but the one you keep deep inside you. This inverted self is who you really are but may never show.

It's artistic to have people in this video act like they would around friends, family but their inverted self, their true self is what we see. Take it as you will.

  • I can totally see it as the inverted. Good observation!! excellent!

  • I was thinking of the song in a relationship sort of point of view. Believing in somebody and then seeing the reality of the person. So disappointment. THen having to make the decision to be on your own and leave them. How it hurts but it is what needs to happen.

  • That's exactly what I took from this.

  • The best video i've ever seen:)

  • well... the first time i heard this song, not gonna lie. i cried....

  • Same here...Same here...

  • this video is fucking terrifying.

loves the album and the song though.

  • I like te melody I don't however understand what it is about..

  • i kind of thought that it was about how bad life is for most people but in the western world we go living on pretending its perfect and only worring about trivial things

  • I dunno about you but we all create our own problems. Some of the happiest people in the world are the poorest.

  • well put!

  • that's just something poor people say.

  • That an obnoxious thing to say. You'll find that money is only a minor problem people face in life.

  • well said!

  • hm, i'd say it's pretty hard to be happy when your starving, cold, tired, and worked raw to the bone. i speak from experience. however, if happiness is "most welcoming" and "inviting" people, people without a chip on their shoulder and nothing to lose, i'd say that there may be a benign truth to that statement...sometimes.

  • I think it's about causing yourself to have a messed up life. They won't stop until hell is a good life. So they've made a few mistakes, big deal, but they keep making them so now their lives are falling apart. She also mentions her bf leaving her for his friends.

  • such a good video wow. i think the video is just about being lonely and feeling like an outsider. Then of course you feel bad and like an alien, but everyone else just carries on with their life and whether or not you're dying it doesn't matter to anyone but yourself, since no one really cares that much. This seems the case with many friends these days. anyways, emily haines is a goddess shes amazing.

  • what is this song exactly about?

  • I've seen this video in Camerimage festival competition :]

really good song and video as well

  • I LOVE THIS SONG !!! REALLY GOOD !!

  • im hoping to get a simular effect with painting, perhaps not so in depth...lemmie at 'er in a couple of hours :D

  • great song...very creepy looking video

  • breathtaking

  • the groove in the chorus is insane

  • whoa... how did they achieve this effect? It's like they're see-through!

  • Thermo-imaging.

  • i had always loved this song. but didnt know the video is so good as well. memorable.

  • this is such a rad video...

  • I found this on my friends myspace profile song and ever since I've been addicted. It's such a great song!

  • A few monthes ago this video had about 25,000 views on it. I want to know what got everyone listening to it. Did you see on a show or something?

  • mind your own god damned business, please.

  • Wow, I hope this is a joke post...

Back to Cactus, I just now searched for Emily Haines. I'm a Metric fan and I remember seeing her perform her solo stuff on a late night show (Was it Conan? Conan usually has all the best music performances) and recognizing her voice. But I didn't get her name and I never bothered to search for her stuff until now. Beautiful stuff.

  • There is a college radio station that I listen too, that plays alternative music. I liked the song and since I couldn't get the title I looked up the lyrics and then popped up Emily Haines.

  • A buddy hooked me up w/ an MPtrois. Wah. I was floored. I only just discovered this crazy Canuck scene - I got into Stars a while ago, but didn't realize this whole BSS connection. I'd heard of them years ago, but never heard.

  • Simulacrum likes a fiendish squid, whipping its tentacles out to get you.

  • This video is so cool! I love this song

  • Her voice reminds me of Alison Sudol (A fine frenzy)

  • LISTEN TO BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE!

    She is from B.S.S.

  • she is actually from metric... and not so much from B.S.S

  • wow. haha you clearly dont know broken social scene. or emily. she debuted with them. like most great artists do

  • She is actually a member of BOTH BANDS ;) B.S.S. & Metric

  • Broken Social Scene has like fourty part time members. Chances are if they're canadian and indie then they've been in at least a song of theirs.

  • I'm pretty sure that Feist was from B.S.S.

  • she does kinda sound like her now you mention it ..

  • Oh wow, it's really beautiful...

  • emily haines is by far one of the best female vocalists around right now...her solo stuff and with metric awesome voice/lyrics!

  • I love how simple the lyrics and her voice are. Yet they both have such depth and meaning.

  • This record is completely heartbreaking, what's more heartbreaking however, is how underrated this album is. I can honestly say that I've never been more excitied for the next album, (hopefully this year).

  • why LMAO? it is great and fucking creative

  • I don't understand the song..or the video .-. Someone explain, please?

  • listen to the lyrics closely, it isnt really hard to understand

  • That really isn't a useful reply, lmao.

  • cool. at the end it looked like that circle of monsters who were circlejerking on "I Am Legend" with will smith

    great vid

  • I never noticed THAT before...but you are right...weird, yet cool... :O

  • I love this song. I love her style. Dr. Blind is great, too.

  • i agree, its hard to find good artests these days that write there own intellegent lyrics, i really think that mathew good band and metric are really fun bands to listen to stoned, and this vid stoned is just... amazing :D

  • on top of the fact that her songs are amazing whether in a band or by herself, her voice is great. it's so beautiful live and not many bands are like that anymore

  • There's plenty of good music out there with intelligent lyrics.

You just have to look around a little. It makes it all the better when you have to dig around a little.

  • true words spoken by an intelligent person

  • Thank you for the kind words.

Sorry about the year long delay.

  • i love'r so much but whats with metric???

  • doesn't 3:36 remind anyone of i am legend

with those crazy zombie figures standing in that room

    scuuuryyy

  • haha omg yes! that's exactly what i thought when i saw it ;)

  • This is that same technology that attack helicopters use to kill kill kill people from miles away. I'm glad its being put to better use, Emily Haines use. the best kind.

  • its also the same technology that fire fighters use to save people from burning buildings. its a shame people always have to think of things in their worst form. but i do agree emily haines is making the best use of this :D

  • anyone knows how i can get a camera like this? its a "cold camera", but where can i buy one!!!

  • umm if you have $2000+ then at hard core video shops and survailence shops. also you can look around on the internet and if you can afford it then shipping is nothing

  • Can't you guys spot a troll when you see one?

  • Amusing much!

  • wow. chill out religious people, seriously. the internets = freedom of speech for EVERYONE. If you don't like this then I guess you shouldn't have watched through the whole fricken thing. It's that simple. I'm sick of people being like "OMG. MY BOOK *WHICH WAS WRITTEN BY GOD* SAYS THIS IS BAD. YOU ARE GOING TO HELL. I'M GOING TO SCREAM TORTURE THREATS AT YOU ONLINE BECAUSE IT MAKES ME FEEL COOL." you people just lose the whole meaning of religion. And it's not to threaten and scare people.Peace.

  • you go girl or man whatever :-) you're totally right

  • lmfao, chrissy, i was reading this comment like "Wow, that sounds like an awesome thing chissy would say 8D"

    Then i saw the screename

    LAWL

    unbelievable.

  • non tu nas pas compris je voulais dire ke le video est incroyable pour ceux ki le comprenne(le video)...

  • qui....pas ki...

  • i love this song. i love emily haines. i love metric. i love everything about her music. i love the whole fucking album <3.

  • Completely Agree

  • Hell is on earth, with the potential for Eden, its all a metaphor

  • this is a really powerful video, very good.

  • This makes so much sense.

  • Guys and dolls: IN this video they used black and white infrared film, a thermal image camera shows where the heat is in color.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG !!! REALLY GOOD !!

  • the song and the video blend perfectly

  • what an interesting effect ... like everyone is a lantern, giving off light

  • i love this music video

  • AWESOME SONG !!!

  • Beautiful song...the first one I heard by Emily, and the one that made me fall in love with her music. ♥!

  • love it

  • nice video and song! :D

  • I enjoyed this video's style immensely. When the tears rolled, I could almost feel them.

  • even in infrared emily haines looks sexy

  • i was thinking the same thing

  • that's your opinion. i like the video.

  • That's probably because this is NOT black & white; it's infrared.

It was meant to create a version of hell that is cold, dark, lonely, etc. I think the video achieves this quite well.

  • *That was a responce to CurtisNeedsaRide on the second page*

  • Thanks for your support!

  • Ummmm.....Satanic Accusing Dude......Ur kinda the satanic 1 cuz ur trying 2 make evry1 believe that something innocent is satanic. SO STICK THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT!

  • it's the mask of a pig, not a dog.

    so what?

  • Amazing song, strange video.

  • do u have anything better 2 do u crack head? like serious dont waste ur fucking time commenting on videos when no one gives a shit what u have 2 say, emily is amazing, u dont deserve her.

  • does anyone know what effect was used on the camera?

or was it just digitally enhanced to look like this?

  • It looks like it was edited twice, once by temperature and then reverse-polarized? That's just a guess, might be a bad one.

  • Yeah...that sounds about right.

    hmm. thanks.

  • i heard infared

  • Definitely B&W Infrared film. The film is exposed by some visible light, but mostly the spectrum of red which we cannot see. That's why you begin to see some of the veins of the people in the video in addition to other things which you normally can't see. Awesome film.
